Swedish Wildboar hunt....
      #196316 - 10/12/11 09:19 PM

I came back yesterday from a Wildboar hunt in the south of Sweden. Two day of hunting with 7 clients, Thursday and Friday. I have a hunt for business friends once a year. We did hunt with specialized Boar dogs. Moosedogs like Laika, Jämthund and crossbreedings between Norwegian grey and Wachtel. So only Boars were allowed. During the days the Boars are laying in thick young forest, most often in Spruce forests. So they are very thick and demanding for those with dogs to go through. The forests in pics are not representive for those thick ones. Often you meet a Boar on a distance of 1 meter, you can be over runned if you are in the wrong place. We were sitting in stands or on the ground surrounding these areas and hunted three or four areas a day.
Day one we shot two Boars, I did shoot one of them a female, but the hunters did shoot bad and did not hit three. Several were also running through and hunters were not able to take a shot. They run rather fast and if the dogs are very close its dangerous for the dog if you take a shot.
Day two we had very bad weather, with rain and very hard wind. Bad for the hunters but good for hunting I think. We were only 5 hunters. The boars couldnīt hear us and were undisturbed when we did find them. So if you could keep the rain from the scopes the chances were rather good. But it was also harder for the dogs to find the boars. We did find some boars and shot 3, I did shoot a young one that came up on a road in high speed with a dog jus 2 meters behind. You need to have Boars rather close. Those shot on DVD are in 30-40 meters. The chances to have a bad shot and a hard searching for wounded animals increasing with distance. The hunters need to be disciplined. Though it was great days with some nice dinners together with good friends. Lots of jokes and laughing. I did use my Blaser with silencer and a Zeiss 1,5-6x42 Varipoint. That scope is a good choice on these hunts. 9,3x62 286 North Fork.
Best regards Staffan

Really quite amazing. Easy to see why the -sens and -ssons poured into our area here and felt so much at home.

Thanks very much for posting. Really great to see local cultural hunts. Great stuff.

Weather looks about the same as here, too.

Except for the game.

Would you care for a few predators?

Let's see, we have lion, bobcat, wolves, coyotes, black and grizzly bear. And large raptors for the baby deer. I'd be fascinated to know what deer, elk and moose would be here if we really put the bite on the game killers.

There are rumors of boar being dumped as a fight against Federal dumping of wolves. In fact, some already exist in Owyhee County.

Aren't boar a fairly recent newcomer to Sweden? How did they get there? Legal or illegal introduction? What is the population like?

Tak so mycket, Sville. Very much enjoy your threads.

In the south of Sweden there are quite a few predators. They only have Lynx and fox. There are some wolves wandering through. From Stockholm and up north there are a lot of wolves. Wolves are situated mostly in the middle of Sweden. From somewhere north of Stockholm and up north there are plenty of brown Bear.
Long ago there where plenty of Boars in Sweden. They were introduced again behind fences. Some fences broke down and in that way they were introduced to freedom. In the 1990 they were starting spreading in the south. Now they are common, except in some areas up to the middle of Sweden. More in the south though. We think that we in a few years are going to shoot more Boars then Mooses in Sweden. They are hard to hunt, but fun and interesting. Glad you like it!!! /S

Staffan,

Interesting to see. Was going to ask you if you hunt for specific animals or just hunt a mixed "bag" of game that is encountered. But I see you mention, this was a driven hunt specifically for boar.

Looks like fun.

Is blaze orange clothing a legal requirement in Sweden, or just encourage or required on your own hunts?

Thanks for posting.

Its not legally. But I think most teams wanīt people to wear something blaze orange or yellow. Most people moving around in the area use a vest or jacket. I like this vest, a lot of pockets for the Garmin doggps, radio and other stuff. And I donīt want to get shot when we often are that many people hunting together. /S

Afro408: it was a rope I attached around its neck.
John: I did let her find it, she did, and she isn't afraid, she did take some hair and is interested. Good development I think, but I don't want her to go for the living Boars yet.

Sville,

I notice that you have a windmill in the background of one of the photos. Do they effect the hunting in any way? Scare the moose or boar off, or decrease the number of forest birds?

No, very little influence for different bird species. It doesn't affect the animals, in the beginning there were lot of talking about that. But now when there have been windmills for many years, we can't see any affect on populations.

Except for the windmil - these logging slashs could be just a couple of hundreds looking just like them - around here. It is uncanny, the way our country's 'bush' and landscape is so similar, but then I guess we merely have to look at the longitude.

My pleasure to show you a few pics from around here.

Shooting trap with my flintlock 20 bore.

Rifle trail through the bush

Some wide open spaces, very simlar to some of your areas.

Gopher shooting in ranch land

We do have some decent sized wolves, now, thanks to the US Government Rod and RIpp have them in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming

Trout fishing on Big Onion Lake, just south of here.

An old picture, taken near Terrace, BC. nice little 30" (about 10 pound) steelhead.

Picture in Jasper Nat. Park, headed South to Banff Nat. Park. Technically speaking - just inside Aberta.

Took this one headed out hunting, one morning.

I'll toss a few in here also. Mostly out the back, and front doors.

A few...quite a few actually...miles pretty much straight south from Daryl!

Sville great pictures and an interesting hunt. I like your choice in scopes.

Daryl that is some big country there. I would go as far as calling it Majestic contry.

9.3 it must be nice to be able to look out your back/front door and see some of those sights.

I had a funny looking boar on my game camera this sunday. It looked like some sort of scab on the boar. I knew of this boar because he was the biggest in the area, I have seen him for some years.

In this area we donīt have that many boars, so we are rather careful in shooting them. But they are increasing rapidly. I talked on monday with a veterinary on the game department. He said that it could be scab and if so it would spread to the other. I decided to go out in the evening and take him away. I donīt have any good stand beside this feeding place because we separate feeding and hunting. But eighty meters away there are a old high stand, originally for hunting roebuck before the forest grow up. I went up with risk for life, and I thought if I fire the .300 Win mag the stand will fall apart. In the evening there were coming some male boars up feeding, in total six, and it was really interesting watching them. The right one did show up just before dark. I took a shot rather immediately, he ran away in a group of seven boars. I went down, but there were no trace. They did run in to a rather thick young forest, itīs not that fun to go after a big boar in that sort of forest. I went in and didnīt find anything. I started to go metodically through it and suddenly I found him. He did go 80 meters and the 13,0 gram Oryx did go through the lungs and out.

It showed that it was a big old boar. It wasnīt anything wrong with him. The winter hair was partly lost and he hadnīt yet got some new summer hair.
Now the worked started to get 145 kg out of the forest to the road. This hunt was on my own property so I had the ATV, isnīt easy anyway in that sort of forest. But I did enjoy the hunt and the work and it was late before I got in bed. Itīs fun to be a hunter. /Staffan
