Off to the Land of the Vikings!
      #142309 - 19/09/09 03:11 AM

In about a week's time I'm off to the Land of the Vikings.

A couple of very nice forumites invited me to visit and with enough air-miles I couldn't say no. Plus the chance to hopefully snap a cap or two off in a new Rigby shotgun (hoping!?) at some feathered creatures and maybe participate in the moose hunting season.

Norway and Denmark are on the agenda, and it will be nice to catch up with Erik and Peter.

i think it should be doable to find a pheasant or two, for you to have fun with along with a new rigby
i also think that roebuck will be on the agenda, when you come, as they are really hard to stalk this time of year.

i am really looking forward to be spending time with you here in the cold north

best

Hope you get to fish for salmon in the River Tana with local Saami. Maybe ask at the Tromso cultural centre for local advice?

That unfortunately will have to be for later visit, as John will be occupied in the southeastern part of Norway hunting Capercaillie, Black Grouse, and moose.

Although nothing is ever guaranteed when hunting these species, I certainly hope I'll be able to present some chances at each for him.

Erik:

Do you hunt capercaillie and grouse with rifle or shotgun or both?

We use both rifle and shotgun for grouse here, shotgun for turkey.

How big are capercaillie? About the size of this turkey or a bit smaller?

Not a good picture, but here's my son yesterday with a small turkey he shot, and a ruffed grouse also. Sorry the birds don't show up too well, but we were having trouble keeping the hound at bay...

If you visit many of the mansions and palaces (of "old" Europe) there are many capercaillie mounted on the walls as it was (or is) evidently regarded as a difficult "trophy" to hunt.

Looking forward to it.

Had John been here not long ago, he could have shot the one that came to the house almost every day to lick on a salt stone behind the garage. Didn't even have to rope it in to keep it around.

Erik; Thanks very much for the picture of the black grouse and of course the account of how you got it!

So strange in a way, as that whole event could have occured right here.

Including the rope-able moose!

I walked up on this fellow not long ago. They are well-distributed, and on my summer scouting trips I see more of them than elk, but they are still highly restricted for hunting. Numbers down in thick wolf country, and one of the reasons we are so frantic about getting wolf populations under control.

Erik; your larger decent male capercaillie is about the same size as an average hen turkey here. Gobblers go twice that weight and sometimes more. The hen my son shot the other day went about 10 pounds/4.5 kg's, right about what you say for your male caper.

John,

Erik says things have been hectic lately. That means too many raiding parties. For the Vikings all that rape & pillage, loot & plunder gets old after a while.

Tomorrow I'm off to the Vintagers. I'll probably be a victim of rape & pillage, loot & plunder. Pray for me.

Very best to you and Erik and Peter,
Curl

P.S. Maybe one more raiding party while you are there??? A few Scottish virgins?

Uffda is right...

On a tastier note, Erik, here is a blue grouse I shot yesterday. Larger than our common ruffed grouse we normally shoot, this one was shot at much higher elevation than where I live here, it being among the subalpine firs.

About the same size it looks like to your black grouse!

Erik said we might go bare hunting while there, and I think that might be cold.

Oops I meant "bear" hunting. He took a tag out for me, but I do understand the chances of encountering one are slim.

Actually only booked the return flight today! So Erik and Peter might have been stuck with me for who knows how long.

Planning a few days in London after visiting Peter.

The chances depend on the bait. My intentions for you visiting us might be different than you think.

As seen in the humor forum:

Quote:

Bear Hunting

The Pope took a couple of days off to visit the rugged mountains of Alaska for some sightseeing. He was cruising along the campground in the Pope Mobile when there was a frantic commotion just at the edge of the woods. A helpless Democrat, wearing sandals, shorts, an 'Obama' cap and a 'Save the Trees' t-shirt, was screaming while struggling frantically and thrashing around trying to free himself from the grasp of a 10-foot grizzly.

As the Pope watched in horror, a group of Republican loggers with 'Go Sarah' t-Shirts came racing up. One quickly fired a .44 magnum into the bear's chest. The other two reached up and pulled the bleeding, semiconscious Democrat from the bear's grasp. Then using long clubs, the three loggers finished off the bear and two of them threw it onto the bed of their truck while the other tenderly placed the injured Democrat in the back seat.

As they prepared to leave, the Pope summoned them to come over. 'I give you my blessing for your brave actions!' he told them. 'I have heard there was a bitter hatred between Republican loggers and Democratic environmental activists, but now I've seen with my own eyes that this is not true.'

As the Pope drove off, one logger asked his buddies, 'Who was that guy?' 'It was the Pope,' another replied. 'He's in direct contact with Heaven and has access to all wisdom.'

'Well,' the logger said, 'he may have access to all wisdom, but he doesn't know squat about bear hunting! By the way, is the bait still alive, or do we need to go back to Massachusetts and get another one?

Seriously though, baiting bear is illegal here, and we'd have to be very lucky to encounter one just by chance while moose hunting. But I signed you up for a tag just in case.

At Erik's right now.

Have had three enjoyable days, the first two hunting capercaille and black grouse. Saw or heard enough birds, maybe six or seven capercaille the first day and a black grouse, maybe one or two capercaille the second, plus a couple of black grouse. Got a shot off at the first bird on the second morning and should have had a black grouse in the bag, but alas not. That's hunting. Lots of fun and very enjoyable seeing the forests and hill marshes. Very different from what I am used to.

Yesterday was a Oslo day and also very enjoyable.

Tomorrow is a day getting ready for moose hunting and Monday the first day of the moose season. Can't wait.

I'm thinking of you and Erik in the land of my forefathers...

Shot my "capercaillie" today, a nice "buck" turkey with a 8 and a half inch beard, not too bad for these parts.

Erik, did John pass the reinsdyrblinker prøve??

Ladies & Gentleman,

Back in Oz again, after visiting Norway, Denmark and London.

First in Norway, we had a couple of days bird shooting for capercallie and black grouse. Did get a shot off at a black grouse the second morning but unfortunately failed to drop it. However the hunting was very enjoyable, capercallie and black grouse are great game birds and challenging hunting.

Later three days joining Erik's moose hunting team and Erik conveniently did tie up a yearling to a tree on the first morning so I was a very lucky hunter in being able to shoot a moose the first morning of the elg hunting season. Speaking to many hunters in the team many take approximately only one moose a year on average over their hunting careers and hunt from seven days to a fortnight each year, so a first morning success was very lucky indeed. I was put into a good position so was doubly lucky. Erik joined me on the first hunt but after that I was on my own at a shooting stand. Had a couple of other opportunities but will leave that to the story with pictures.

After Norway, I flew down to Copenhagen to visit Peter and stay with him for some pheasant and roe buck hunting either on his own farm or at his syndicate's forest. Good and enjoyable stalking with some high stand sitting as well. We hunted fairly hard at times, the forest was thick with leaves in October so stalking had to be very careful. Had some success to, on the last day, a pheasant and a roe female (for meat) so the efforts in the end were rewarded.

The hospitality during my trip was fantastic and I hope to repay it one day when the gentlemen head down to the Southern Hemisphere one day.

Visited London and the 'new' Rigby's gunmaker, Mark, Peter being another Danish connection of the firm. Tried out a B class shotgun on some clays, and it is a beautiful gun, but my clay busting prowess needs honing, being more instinctive than skilled.

Also visited the Beretta Gallery and met some very nice guys, plus a long chat with a gentleman at Holland & Holland, William Evans also, and also dropped in for a look at Purdeys. Boss had shifted premises so I did not make it there. Also missed out on visiting Ron Wharton unfortunately as I couldn't make it down to his premises. Maybe next time.

The trip and visit was way to short and hopefully will visit Scandinavia again.

I sat next to two Finnish ladies on the flight from London to Singapore whom were travelling to Australia for a holiday and guess what? One of the ladies' husband is also a moose hunter in Finland.

OK you guys!

A nice Christmas gift to us.

Thanks John!! Bravo and very good job!

I've been chomping at the bit for the story of your hunt, John, and as always, eager to here Erik's annual report.

The picture of that planting looks like it was taken on my place, or at least right here near the house. Wow...

AND NOW...WILL SOMEBODY PLEASE GIVE US A FULL REPORT ON THOSE FUNKY WALK-IN-FRONT SCANDI CRITTER CARRIERS???? What's with them? I've seen them for years in pictures of Scandinavian hunting, but have never seen them anywhere else. There is a link to the company that makes them in an old Norma catalog, too. Is there some law that bars a fellow from riding on a machine during hunting? How come the walkinfront? Or is there something else going on? Please fill us in.

They the typical loader to get the animal out, but lately there are more and more atv.s.
But they were built as you are not allowed to carry an firearm in/on a terrain transporter of anny kind, that is if you dont got an permit, this way you dont need to worry. But you are allowed to carry it on a snowmobile, but then only on roads not off road.

They are cheaper then a atv as you would need an driven trailer to come anywere near the terrain capability, and then you wouldnt be able to turn annyway.

btw. nice photos, you had an good time? did it rain much.

Thanks John and 450.

Funky gizmo that!

We use 4wheelers here mostly {ATV's} for that. Some use horses. I've gotten elk out whole on 4heelers, but the big'uns usually require quartering.

John, you had an experience I've dreamed about for many years.

Congrats John and, Erik, you are a gem for getting him on that!

Erik isn't aware I've seen this photo. I found it in his reloading room. It is a photo of his logging contractors at work!

No wonder he makes the forest off limits when logging is underway!

Oh, John...

In no uncertain terms, I've never had any desire to see any of our local crews out of their flannels...

Great trophy there JH,they dont have to be 55 inches wide to be a trophy either, that is a good initial report, the rest to come will be interesting.

BTW if I ran into a logging crew like that...well I reckon I would faint haha.

I always read that Beavers did a lot of damage to trees,

I just never realised that it was so mechanized.

I must admit that it can be somewhat tiring to keep a large group of contractors like that happy and satisfied, but as the forest owner, I am left with no choice.

Johann,

What is the average range that reindeer in Iceland are shot? It looks like there's virtually no cover to hide behind at all!
