Officer´s ACP - (un)limited training possible?
      #334225 - 07/11/19 01:20 AM

Gentlemen,

I have a general question for the use of a Colt Officer´s ACP (stainless steel, Series 80, no modifications, caliber .45 ACP) for training.

A somewhat reduced load will be used:
5.0grs Kemira N320 behind a Haendler & Natermann 230grs copper plated round nose lead bullet with a with cetyl alcohol anti-friction coating (OAL: 32,0mm).

The pistol is normally fired sparingly for around 100 shots per year.

Question:
For training purposes a full day training in an IPSC course should be done with this pistol.
Around 400-500 will be fired in one day.
No doubt that the shooter will suffer more than the pistol, but would you recommend such an extended use of a firearm designed more for show-off and carrying than extended use?

Any information or recommendation is welcome!

best regards
Rolf

If the pistol is set up properly there shouldn't be any problem at all.

There likely will be more wear & tear on the shooter than the gun. 400 - 500 shots per day is quite lot. The shooter has to be in good shape as that level of shooting is fatiguing. While on a pistol team, the most we did in a day was 270 rounds (90 HB 90 CF, 90 22) & that was tiring.

I would say that 400 to 500 per day during training, would be a lot, however the gun will handle it just fine. They are made that way.
If it's a clean burning powder, there will be a little residue, instead of a lot.

G'Day Fella's,

Rolf, I agree with what the other blokes have suggested.
I would also suggest the following;

1) The inclusion of a synthetic recoil buffer, on the pistols recoil spring guide, would help to reduce pistol frame battering (I've been using CP Bullets brand buffers, for decades, on my various 1911 type pistols).
One thing to be aware of (if I remember correctly?), when including one of these recoil buffers on the Officer's ACP in particular, is that it may (not always but sometimes), cause extraction problems?
This is caused by the very slight reduction (by the 1/8" or 3mm thickness, of the recoil buffer), in the slides travel.
But, they also tend to soften the felt recoil, of most of these pistols when they are used.

2) That the lubrication oil that you use, is the best you can use (I've been using and recommending Break Free-CLP for decades).

Hope that helps

Good morning Gentlemen,

here the range report of using a stock Officer´s ACP for an IPSC shooting session:

- For the preparation the pistol was cleaned and lubricated with break-free

- in about 2 hours ca. 140 shots were fired without any problems, stoppages or feeding issues.
The pistol did what it should do.

- due to the %&$§&$% shooter, the results in precision went from mediocre to worse, because I was unable to cope for precision shots with the trigger, which was a little bit creepy.
Midway through the morning exercise the flinch came and stayed.
I experienced problems in hitting beer plates at 7 and 10 meters, which is normally unusual for me.
Also the time for the stages was sub-optimal for having to change magazines after 6 shots, but at least THIS disadvantage I knew before...

- at 10.30 a.m. I switched to a H&K Expert in 9x19 with a good trigger, and from then on the results in precision improved dramatically, and then I experienced some fun in the stages and exercises.

Thank you for the tips and advice!

best regards
Rolf

Thanks for the report

You can get that trigger fixed. Should not be a problem finding someone to do that for you.
Magazine capacity can be addressed with extended capacity magazines.

It's good that you now have the perspective from training.

Have a great weekend!

Interesting Rolf. There are 8 round mags available and when I was shooting my .45, I had 4, 11 round mags for the 1911.

As shown by your experience, for a lot of shooting in one day, the 9mm is hard to beat..

When we do classes it's not uncommon for us to go through 5 to 600 rounds per day..all in 9mm..

While I find it's hard to beat the grip of a 1911..others come close, then add in the better trigger ..makes for a much more enjoyable experience..

I shoot a lot of Glocks..but lately been using a H&K VP9..a lot..very good factory trigger..very accurate and easy to shoot..and much better grip angle than the Glocks...

As Tinker stated, you can certainly slick up that trigger to be as smooth as a baby's bottom..have shot some like that..they too are very nice to shoot..but, again..once you shoot 5 to 600 per day..I prefer the 9mm
