That's a good looking dog! (although I'm sure Siegfried secretly wishes he was an English pointer ).

Is he good with birds? Do you have any birds on the farm, or do you have to go somewhere else?

Ha, Siegfried speaks English so he is an English speaking pointer. At least he tries to speak it.

The only birds we have on the farm are feral pigeons and wild ducks. No ducks yet, even though it is the season as the rivers and creeks have not started flowing yet. Need winter and late autumn rains first. These rains can hold off for a month if my preferences are heard.

Stubble quail can be found further afield but I haven't chased them for years.

I am planning to fence in part of the property and breed pheasant, guinea fowl and quail. With a breeding section. When birds leave it they will be fair game.

Siegfried has a mania for hunting rabbits. That is what he was looking for it the fields.

When we can post our photos directly, I'll let you see a REAL dog, my Llewellin, Ms. Scarlet.

O.K...I'll admit I do like your Shorthair. I tend to like the German breeds in general. My dad many years ago brought the first WPGs out West. We always had several Griffons and a Shorthair. They were exceedingly tough dogs with no "quit" in their souls.

Nice looking GSP. Does yours like water? Is he a natural retriever or did he need work? My two guys are getting on - 13 now, but next summer I plan to get a couple of broke two year olds. One is a field trial champion that has a little difficulty now holding up his rear end, but he still will do some pheasant hunting this fall.

jgttechjunkie

Siegfried absolutely loves water. He readily swims in hot weather or cold weather. Of course it is much warmer here in Winter.

He will naturally retrieve quite well, but my training was a bit amiss so he should be better and gets away with too much. He was the first gun dog I have attempted to train. The next will be much better. Unfortunately even though I have tried to find one and many other acquaintances have also for themselves, there is not such a thing as a professional gun dog trainer anywhere near.

As a puppy (and still does) when shooting rabbits he naturally lay down or sat when he sees me raise a rifle or shotgun. He was a very natural pointer but around 8 months to 15 months when he suddenly took on pointing at everything and anything unfortunately was a period in which I was not able to be in the field (work commitments - a company public listing). He points well though but because he has so much freedom has learned to hunt solo. He is always in game country when with me when I am working. So he is more of a pet than an ideal gun dog. Nevertheless he is a great companion dog.

Has anyone got any ideas on how to train a dog from "self-hunting" when they have so much freedom? Apart from caging or chaining him for extended periods when not 'under-control' which I won't do, I am not sure how such an attitude could be changed. Even with a new younger dog ???

The breed is not naturally disposed to be "territorial".
Most people I know, even those living on farms, have GSPs under close control, either in a kennel or in the house. One or two people I knew who had GSPs as free spirits lost them to cars or coyotes (coyotes where I live are a special problem, even in town).

I spent a lot of time with my first GSP with training, but eventually sent her and the ones that came after her to a professional trainer, so I don't have the skills to offer you any advice. One of the advantages the trainer had was that he was on horseback so he could quickly discipline a dog that was doing something he didn't want done.

A good professional trainer knows dogs and how they think. When I would get a dog back after some time with the trainer it always amazed me how quickly it would respond to the command "COME". Like lightening hit it. At least the first day back. The second day they would respond, but without the same edge. By the third day it was clear that the dog intended to complete what it was doing before it obeyed the command, and that was where it stabilized.

Absolutely beauticul dogs. As I am on the verge of buying a new place, I have decided to get a gun dog especially for the fabulous bird hunting we have in these parts. My wife wants a Labrador retriever but I have been thinking about a Weimaraner. MacNaughton and I have had long discussions about a choice of dog, and I am looking for a good working strain. Hope he/she turns out like these two fine dogs you have here.

Last day for my GSP Siegfried [Re: NitroX]
      #69335 - 12/01/07 12:24 AM

Today I said good bye to my friend Siegfried. Spent the afternoon sitting with him and talking to him.

Early in December he developed a problem with his left hind leg, and it no longer worked, he was dragging it.

Took him to a local vet, who recommended me taking him to a specialist in Adelaide at a veterinarian hospital. The prognosis was not good, possibly just a pinched nerve in the rear hip and that wasn't explaining everything. So he was left there for the afternoon and an operation performed where a hightlighting fluid was injected into his spine and x-rays taken. Unfortunately the results of this one wasn't good, so a second test was done from the neck down, the first being from the hips up.

Both tests revealed the fluid wasn't making it through the spin at the back of the ribs and that there was problem there. The x-rays also did show a pinched nerve problem which was masking a more serious problem. The symptoms of a tumour in his spine. No operation being possible to fix the problem.

This all took in the end three days, actually when I was supposed to be upgrading these forums, one reason for the longer delay in getting them back up. A fourth day to drive home with some errands.

After the operation and testing unfortunately he never recovered the use of his right leg either, so now both the left and the right leg were not working properly. However bandaging his feet he was able to have some mobility by dragging his rear feet on the ground. Sometimes to quite long distances if the gate was left open. He was eager to join in as usual. Unfortunately rides in the tractor were no longer possible as it would be too difficult to get him in and out, and nowhere for an immobile dog to ride. So he was always greatly upset by this, screaming tantrums, as he has always been able to accompany me when working.

I thought we would not have him for long, not even Christmas as he complained a lot at night, one night which was horrible to hear. I thought he was in pain and almost shot him that night. It turned out, he wasn't in pain, just sad, and complaining about the TV and lights being on! The little bugger almost got put down for it!

A lot of time he has been happy and continued on even if increasingly immobile. This last weekend he unfortunately could not get up himself anymore so a day to have him put down was organised. Yesterday night even had trouble reaching his water bowl so had to be helped.

We have been spoiling him for the last three weeks. Today he had a chocolate donut, chocolate being dangerous for dogs, but they love it anyway. A whole packet of dog jerky. Cheese and milk to drink. Even if just lying there he had a happy afternoon while I talked him to him about the book "White Hunters" which I am currently reading.

Originally I planned to do it myself, but I decided I did not want the last sight of my dog, to be with a hole through his head. Going in his sleep was much more peaceful.

He has been buried and I plan to plant a flamboyant tree on his grave. Siegfried's kennel name was actually "Flashfire" so the fiery red flamboyant or flame tree is appropriate. It is not ideal or easy to grow in this area as the winters are too cold, but we have managed to get jacarandahs (very similar requirements) growing so hopefully ..... Nearby a willow will be planted.

My main regret is Siegfried never having any puppies that we know of, as I would have liked to have a pup of his, and that the photos are so inadequate. While never but once being gun-shy, his first un-planned experience of guns as a puppy was when he started to run off on a gun shot of some vermin near the house, but on being called, stopped and came back. Always a game boy. But he has always been shy of a camera lens. Videos were even worse as an older puppy he used to jump up and into the lens knocking the camera into my eye. He always got a nervous look when a camera was pointed at him.

Of course I intend to look for a new hunting mate as soon as a suitable one can be found.

I need to bring it up here.... check out a song by an artist by the name of Fred Eaglesmith, the song title is "He's a Good Dog"

The song is also performed by an Australian artist by the name of Audrey Auld. Her version is very good but Fred's version really brings home the matter of dealing with having to put a dog down as well as the rewards and pestering moments of owning a best friend.

NitroX,
It is always sad to loose a good dog but what a blessing it is to have had one, a good one. If every dog year is 7 to our one they give more than 7 times the enthusiasm, companionship and love in their compact little lives and many times the memories. My favorite eulogy for a dog was written by US Senetor George Vest on the passing his hunting dog:

" The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world is his dog. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer, he will lick the wounds and sores that come with the encounters with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a King. When all other friends desert, he remains."

Sorry for your loss.

John,

I'm so sorry to hear this news. Even though it was best for Siegfried. He clearly had a very good life with you, joining in on just about everything including tractor rides and so on. It's these memories that you will cherish forever, despite the near future being rather blue now that he's gone.

Lets be glad that he's now in a place with no pain, running after birds, eating the chocolate that he otherwise shouldn't, and sniffing out bitches in heat in order to make the puppies he never had down here. And rest assured that you'll meet up again in the future, as all good owners and their dogs eventually do in the heavenly hunting grounds.

Erik

Funny how the old pals of the past haunt our minds.. still think weekly of my first Wirehair Fritz... was a remarkable dog..died much too young from a twisted intestine..

have others since, but think of him the most.. currently Kate is 10.5 and is getting slower and slower.. Elsa, 6 months is a joy to train and watch..

Life keeps keeping on...

I'll have to add a Donder to my Blitzen in the latter half of the year.

My boy is getting old, twelve.

Sieg only made it to eight. A tumour in his spine.
