At the moment my young little fellow, Blitzen, is having a big whinge. Because I am inside doing a couple hours of office work and some media interviews and not outside with him!

Blitzen, like his predecessor is learning to understand his name in multiple ways, Blitzen, Blitzi, and Blitz.

And he lives up to his name, ie "lightning", by acting like a very fast lightning bolt when he attempts to bolt out of his bed when he is put into his "bedroom" at night away from our noise and light. Amazingly lightning bolt sprint.

Blitzen did a very nice point on a mature fallow stag lying on the ground. The fact it was dead and headless. My captive stags have been exceptional aggressive this year and this is the second I have lost. Was in the sun all day, so just took off the head for a display mount later.

This head was just so so. The first was an exceptional 3 year old and I was VERY disappointed to loose its genes.

I have a separate stag enclosure. Not big enough it seems. Usually not a problem, except when a stag gets himself caught up somehow, like the first one did this rut. Then the other bastards have a go while he can't get away. The second stag seems to have been unlucky.

I did have seven stags, now five, one a spiker with the breeding stag with all the girls. Three others in the stag pen.

Good DAWWWWG Blitzen !

It seems that with Spring in full session here now, Bosco thinks that EVERY bird that flies over the yard is an enemy bomber threatening the homeland. If he gets out of the yard, which he did last week, he first goes over to piss off the neighbors horses and then chases Robins until I can reign him in.... there is no sense asking one of the kids to get him back, he acts as though he simply doesnt hear them, at least when I call him off, it may take a lil time but he realises that I mean business.

I hope that this is a passing phase and that he figures out that there is no way in hell that he is going to catch a Robin, Starling, or Sparrow.

Blitzen had his first outing today with rifle and bunnies. Really just a walk in the bush for an hour or so with the chance of a bunny or two.

I only introduced Blitz to rifle fire two weeks ago. Shooting one a couple of times 50 metres away while I stayed with him and patted him and gave him a treat. Jumped for the first two shots but no undue alarm. Gave him a good smell of the gun smoke and the .22 mag case as well.

Last week, again at 50 metres, then 25 metres, then right next to him. Pats and treats each time. Again a good sniff of the gun oil and powder smoke.

Today he looked excited when he smelt the rifle. A good sign!

The hunt today. When I aimed the rifle to look through the scope at rabbit like object, Blitz showed interest and stood still. Another good sign. Only had a couple of shots at rabbits. One about a hundred metres away and a baby. Missed. The second shot over Blitz's head (and ears - not good) and a rabbit in the bag. No gun shyness at all except his hair was a bit on end on his back. Pats and reassurance. Took the little dog down and showed him the blood to smell. And then he found the rabbit. Good smell all over this strange animal, which undoubtably he has smelled on the ground before. Did not bite it. But certainly tried to grab it when I picked it up, and the little bugger tried to get hold of the swinging bunny when walking.

I am deliberately being low key on rabbits, even if they are the main target around here, as they are irresistible to chase. The skin will come in handy as a cover for a toy though.

Also saw a fox and a grey kangaroo. The fox saw me first though and was off at a run. Maybe if I had a .222 and not the .22 Mag it would be in the bag too.

Also met a nice lady, a adult female GSP whom was also being taken for a walk after bunnies for the first time. Blitz was at first scared of this big lady but then got very playful. I have taken Blitz to puppy "pre-school" to meet other puppies for socialisation but only one class so far.

There is some water in the pools of the creek so tomorrow it might be his first swim.

Would have taken some photos of the young fellow to share, but both camera batteries were flat. Maybe tomorrow.

***

Any suggestions anyone and ideas?

I'm going to see if I can get hold of some blood from a hare and deer and start using it for low key tracking training. Get him started early.

The little dog got thrown into a pool in the creek today. And managed to dog paddle out even if a little frightened saving his master from getting wet by 'saving' him.

Anyone have any other ways to coax a young pup into the water the first time? Was I a little hasty in my "Viking" approach to learning to swim?

Blitzen's BIG SWIM DAY (from May) photos ...

"There are is really interesting smells around here ..."

"I don't believe in standing still much ..."

"... but the world around me moves really fast."

"What you really expect me to get in all that cold water?!"

"Will you really shoot me if I don't go for a swim?"

After that I put the camera down, took my rifle off the sling and Blitz got a swim from a toss ...

He sort of got picked up and dropped into the water. Frightening for a little boy.

Those photos were from 6 weeks ago. The little monster is at least 6 kgs heavier now already.

Will give him another test at swimming and remember to take a fetch toy with me and see if he will get it from shallow water first and then deeper water.

Skippy hops off into the oaten hay crop.

We can still see you!

Off he goes.

We get occasional roos in front of the house, and usually have some on the property. However with good rains this year and abundant good feed, they have moved off back in the hills.
