And why is tail docking banned? Good looking pup, I bet he will be a keen hunter.

Tail docking is banned here too. It's been so for quite a few years actually. As far as I recall, it was the animal rights people who were able to force that thru, as they think it stunts the dogs ability to communicate since they use their tails to do so (or something like that).

How will you train him to avoid snakes in the future?

It is illegal to kill snakes as they are protected. However they can be killed if they endanger humans or stock (or pets). So I will obtain a carcase, and maybe put it in the fridge or freezer if it is not needed yet. Then use it to mark a scent trail. Better fresh. If the dog, needs to be older, scents it and follows their trail, you discourage them, or tell them no. When the dog is much older if necessary I will use an electric collar to give the discouragement message. Maybe let the dog come across the snake and then zap him if he shows any interest.

Siegfried was very frightened of snakes and when scenting them would jump back. But then he would follow-up their scent which is not good. As a nine month (?) old pup he was struck in the shoulder by a brown snake but somehow the snake never got the fangs in. Probably at the extreme reach of the strike. Definitely a lucky dog and he certainly used up a life with that luck.

This is just my own method. I will have to see if anyone else has any other methods.

Stupid extreme greens and animal rights people here too. And the Veterinary Association was supposedly pushing for it too. The breeder informed me it is now even illegal to own a dog with a docked tail if it was born after a certain date.

When the tail docking was introduced here I remember reading studies in Sweden where since it was introduced there, the incidence of hunting dogs with broken tails has gone up tremendously.

But the animal rights cretins would argue that hunting dog breeds have no place in our 'plastic' society anyway and should be exterminated or bred out. I think they have the right idea but the wrong target ie the target should be them.

I have the same impression here when it comes to dog breeds that have traditionally had docked tails. Unlike our English Pointers slimmer/trimmer tails, many GSP's have tails the length and width of a small log. The momentum when they hit things running thru the bush is far greater than the slim tails on our dogs. I suspect it will take a very long time before this is changed thru selective breeding.

in denmarkit is ilegal to dock too, but you can be allowed if you can show that it handicaps your working dog, pretty much a letter from the vet and snip.

But isn't tail docking and removal of dew claws done shortly after a pup is born? Why on earth wait until they are grown to do this?

Another photo session with Blitzen.

Now in the front garden this quite nice flower was growing on the "non"-lawn. Perfect for the puppy smells flower photo.

Well Blitzen gave it one split-second sniff and ...

... no cute little smell the flowers photos for this pup, around the other side and ...

... destroy with those teeth.

How to get a close up without this little fellow constantly wriggling and moving. Sacrifice a thumb.

Yes his teeth and toe nails seem to be extra sharp compared to my memory of past pups.

His also has a lot of drive to use them, and if one gets rough in response to discourage him, he steps up the attack a gear or two ...

Yesterday while near the deer yards Blitzen was running ahead while I was doing something. Found him intently pointing at four four grown fallow stags, looking at him through a fence. His long tail was a bit droopy and his raised foreleg a bit curled but he was definitely pointing. He looked at me sideways several times which quite a worried or confused face but held the point for a good twenty or thirty seconds. But when a stag decided to run away a few metres, it was time to chase. The gate stopped the puppy getting in trouble.

Pity I didn't have a camera.

Later when in the house front garden he was playing around but disappeared. Let him have some freedom, but hoped no snakes. Eventually went looking for him and the little bugger had gone several hundred metres into a deer pen and was looking at the dominant breeding stag through a fence.

Very interested in the deer, but they are a little out of a ten week old puppy's league, definitely the stags at the moment.

I have a great GSP bitch and probably would never get another type of dog. The most intelligent dog I've ever seen. I often get comments like "the prettiest dog I've ever seen". Loyal and very good with my daughter.

Not the hyper-active dog reputed to be. But they do demand attention. Wouldn't you?

375Fanatic and Bonanza,

A couple of very nice 'pooches'!

Peter,

Blizen is a handful but actually quite well behaved and loves if he can't get away with anything else, just sitting or sleeping at my feet.

Very soon I will be able to give him more time on regular training.

John:
Blitzen is a great looking pup!!

And like all pups, looks both alert and troublesome at the same time, very good photos and whats a pierced thumb or two if it gets you the close up you want! lol

Tail docking is still permitted here in Canada (at least in my Province) but I have read that is being outlawed in many countries.

No matter Blitz looks fantastic and although you can never replace Seig,,,,now you have a brand new pal to get to know and love and start new memories with .... I really like the shots you took of him in the car ,,, well captioned too!

I am glad you have a new buddy!

Challenging deer at 10 weeks, atta boy Blitz! ,,, good dawwwwg! (you lil friggen nut lol)

Cool Name Too!

Cheers John!
