Show Your Bellies!
      #96873 - 16/02/08 11:44 PM

Maybe I'm obsessed with pieces and parts. Several years ago I started a thread featuturing double rifle muzzles.
It drew some interest, and you can see it here:

"It's What's Up Front That Counts"

Well, my right arm was laid up for a while, and that got me to thinking about what I could post once I got
back my ability to type and work with photos. The answer: BELLIES!

We handle our beloved guns, we carry them, we shoot them, and usually they are right side up. In a way,
that's a boring position. We see the top of the gun, and often the side of the gun, particularly if we
lay it down. What we don't see from normal handling is the belly of the gun.

To see the belly you have to turn the gun upside down. It won't stay in that position naturally. Nobody
carries a gun upside down. If you lay a gun down, it stays on its side. It takes a bit of effort to look
at the gun's belly.

But the belly provides the broadest expanse of metal for the engraver's art. The actioner also takes
a lot of interest in the belly with his files as he sculptures the action. There's a lot to look
at under there.

So I decided to show some bellies, and I would like to look at your bellies too. Everybody get your camera,
turn your guns belly up, and snap a photo. Let's look at BELLIES!

I'm going to start with some rifle bellies, but I have photos of shotgun bellies too. I don't think
I'll get thrown off the forum for posting shotgun bellies, and you won't either.

Here's my first belly, and it's a nice one. This is my Woodward .450/.400 3.25" double rifle. To my eye
this is as fine a layout of tight English scroll as can be found.

More to come.

That's all the rifles for now. The next bellies are shotgun bellies, but beautiful none-the-less.

First is a Harry Kell engraved Purdey 12 bore SLE from 1931. A beautiful, classic belly.

I only have one ready to go a Westley with rifled choke tubes

Dale, what a great display of bellies!

That last one, the Merkel from Frauenstorfer, makes me a little teary-eyed.

To explain my emotion to the rest of the forum, that rifle, now owned by Dale, was my very first double rifle.
It's an 8x57JR and a real beauty. I parted with it before I had the ability to take good digital close-up photos.
My only photographic record of it is a few less-than-great 35mm shots of it. I would like to see Dale do a nice photo
array of this rifle to post on the Double Rifle Photo & Archive Forum.

One day I would love to get it back in hand to photograph it myself. It has really fine engraving,
stunning wood, and beautiful lines.

Thanks Dale,
Curl

Here's a fine belly from down under. It's an O/U Winchester Grand European 7x65R double rifle belly
sent to me by my good friend Alan Moon. I hope Alan will add a few words to tell us about this interesting rifle.

I'll bet it has taken a lot of game.

Alan, thanks for showing this belly.

Curl
Thanks for posting my photo and thanks also for this ripper of a thread.
These photos certainly stir the double rifle blood in my veins!
Regarding the Grand European.......
I re-regulated this rifle quite a few years back to shoot the Woodleigh 160 gn protected point bullets.
It is a great shooter and has a good reliable action.
Apart from re-regulation and bedding the stock head, the rifle is still set up as originally built, with ejectors, single inertia trigger, and auto safety.
It came from the (Japan) factory fitted with EAW QD pivot scope mount which (on this rifle) usually holds a 1-4 Leupold.
I have taken many good boars and quality billy goats with this gun, as well as crows, foxes and feral cats.

One of the rather rare Westley Richards Sidelocks, as most of their top of the line doubles like this one were built using WR's distinctive detachable locks or, as we Yanks call them, "Droplocks." This one is chambered is WR's 318 and is in wonderful condition. Nicely engraved as well. Dave

It's my gun. I bought it. Hardly a 'random dealers' belly, unless you want me to call Kevin and say that you insist that I return it. Since the photo they took was quite good, why reinvent the wheel? Would you like to see more pictures or a copy of the bill of sale, or will my word suffice? Dave

And should I give this Lancaster 280 Flanged back to the man who bought it from Capt Curl? Since he already took a series of outstanding photos, why, as I said before, reinvent the wheel. Remember, unless we are talking about a Post-Korean War weapon, few of us are the original owners. Dave

The deposit I gave the guy I normally deal with, who told me an hour ago that the deal was done? Should I call him back and tell him to fly done to their store down there and grab it or should I wait for it to ship out on Monday?

Sorry, I deal with other snotty and sarcastic lawyers day in and day out, so my jab reflex is overdeveloped. Of course, I wish to God I WAS a 'poser' rather than a real owner, as I would have a lot more money in my accounts but that would leave me with a lot more space in the gun vault. Might piss off the guys I regularly deal with, though, and who the hell wants to die with money in the bank anyhow? No pockets in coffins.

By the way, that looks like a fairly nice H&H. I wanted a lighter shooting double and an H&H that wasn't an arm and more than one leg. Like most of the guns I buy from BC, they go back if misdescribed or if they have 'issues' that are not reported. Any issues with this one, so I can avoid surprises?

By the way, when you speak to Kevin next week remind him I still need the ammo shipped along with the pair of doubles that supposed to be on the way. Dave

By the way, Sinner, the preceeding note was my half-assed apology. As I said, I have an overdeveloped jab reflex. It took me years to learn not to take it out on my wife. The food tastes a lot better now that I figured out how to do that.

Yes, would enjoy whatever history and information you have on this gun. Post here please or, if you wish, send me a PM. Dave

All good here. In any event..

H&H 360NE: The gun was completely refinished by JJ about 10 years ago and not shot much since. The replacement stock was done by David Yale, the original forend was saved but has numerous minor repairs to save the appearance of the wood. Bores show strong rifling with minor erosion at the breech end, and there is very minor frosting in the grooves that run about 12" from the breech, the grooves are dark, as are the lands. It has not been re-proofed. I purchased the gun from George Caswell, and I was told the gun came from an estate sale a year or so earlier. My good friend Richard Edlund still has his H&H 360, he enjoys shooting varmints with it. I just never fell in love with the calibre, so bye bye it went..

I hope you find this information useful.

Thanks. Sounds as it was described, and the cartridge is no doubt why it sat there for a while and why they were willing to 'listen to reason'on price. I ended up with a very nice WR recently in a smaller caliber as the market seems to be in love with the big 'African' chamberings. I suspect once it arrives, it will find a home here as there are enough big honkers in the current collection, including once modern 500NE (and no, there is no need on earth to go larger than that, despite the 577 and 600 premium that anything in those chamberings bring)and my favorite big bore, a WR 476 Droplock from the first decade of the last century that looks far better for its age than its present owner does at his.

Too many very, very nice doubles in the smaller (i.e. under say 450-400) seem to languish on a dealer's shelf or on the Net while the bigger the kick in your shoulder, and your wallet, the faster they go out. Me? I would love to buy a top of the line double in a 22 Hornet, but every one I have found-- and they are scare on the ground -- other than the stupidly overpriced one at Conn. Shotgun, has been in poor condition. I have a whole lot of fun with a Webley Double in 250 Savage I bought from George last year, perfectly proportioned to the round, fun and accurate to shoot, and cheaper than dirt to feed -- as it was (comparatively) to buy. For shooting a double, and I shoot mine rather than leave them in the vault, I prefer the smaller calibers.

But, as part of my mea culpa for using other folks photos, albeit nicely done shots, here is one I just went downstairs and snapped of the 'belly' of an older H&H, a very nice hammer double in 500/450 BP. I thought showing a belly with a 'navel' might be fun. Dave

Here's the info: JDJ Auction 2008

Lot 577A *EXTREMELY RARE CASED DANIEL FRASER MINIATURE DOUBLE RIFLE. SN 2077. Cal. 22 Hornet. Caliber may be 22 WCF but 22 Hornet fits and functions perfectly with good accuracy. This spectacular little rifle has 25" bbls with flat matted rib, raised pedestal front sight with hood and 2-leaf platinum line matted express sight marked "50" and "100". There are special scope mounts dovetailed into the rib and it also has the maker's name & address engraved forward of front scope mount. It has rib extension third fastener with dbl underbite, ejectors & dbl triggers. Mounted with very highly figured French walnut with checkered splinter forearm and capped pistol grip stock with raised checkered side panels & cheekpiece, 14-1/2" over a checkered horn buttplate. Bottom of bbl has a sling eye with a corresponding eye in the buttstock. Bottom of buttstock has an elaborate gold initial shield engraved "W". Receiver & appended iron are spectacularly engraved in very fine intertwined English scroll patterns with fine chain borders and maker's name in a ribbon on each side. Fences have deep relief fleur-de-lis and feather patterns, also with a chain border in a raised rib around front edges. Opening lever is engraved "FRASER'S PATENT" and top tang has a bolted safety with "SAFE" in gold in a black enamel panel. Accompanied by an orig Fraser rifle scope numbered to this rifle and engraved on top identically to the rib marking. Also engraved on top of scope is "SOLE PATENTEES & MANUFACTURERS". It has a telescoping eye piece with leather covered rim. The reticle is fine crosshairs with a dbl horizontal line. Weight: 6 lbs. 6.4 oz. with good shooting dimensions. Additionally accompanied by an orig red felt lined Daniel Fraser oak & leather trunk case embossed on lid "MAJOR V. KNOX" and has an orig maker's gold embossed label inside lid. Bottom is compartmented for the rifle, telescope and a rnd oil bottle engraved on top knob "W.R." All other compartments are empty. Also accompanied by a target which shows great accuracy from the right bbl and reasonable hunting accuracy from left bbl. Very few of these miniature dbl rifles were ever made by Fraser and are rarely ever encountered in the United States. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Bbls retain about 97-98% strong orig blue with a few minor nicks and slight thinning on right bbl over chamber area. Receiver retains most of its orig dark case colors with some slight thinning on the edges. Trigger guard, floorplate, opening lever & bolt retain most of their orig factory blue. Wood is sound with minor handling & storage marks and retains most of its orig oil finish on buttstock, slightly darkened on forearm and may be an old restored finish. Checkering on forearm shows moderate wear. Scope is extremely fine, retaining most of its orig factory blue with fine optics. Mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bores. Case is dry with moderate to heavy staining & wear but completely intact, lightly soiled in bottom. Altogether a very rare set. 4-33793 JR261 (40,000-50,000)

Here is a poor photo of my Thys sidelock 458wm. I'll try to get a better photo, as well as a photo of my A&S Farmars sidelock 375H&H.

By my count we have 87 different photos on display here. That's a lot of bellies.

Don't be bashful. Join in the fun. There must be more bellies to show.

This is a Thomas Bland and Sons, made in 1911 for W.D.M.Bell. I have the factory letter, and the owner of Thomas Bland handled the gun this summer and verified its provinance. Can't do better until I get a picture of Karamojo Bell holding it. That may be on the way.

Curl-

I had this rifle out today to wipe it down and oil it, thought I should snap a shot of it's belly.
These are five of seventeen animals running around the metal on this nice old piece.

Alexander Henry 450/400 2-3/8" BPE "Belly" [Re: CptCurl]
      #146454 - 23/11/09 01:28 PM

Hello guys,

I took some pictures of this rifle today and I thought that I would add to the "belly" photo collection. I find it interesting that the engraving patterns of Alexander Henry rifles of the same era differ so much. Do you suppose that they were chosen by the customer from a pattern book? This rifle was completed in 1890.

I would've thought the Swan engaving might benefit from some "shadow/facet cuts" to enhance the work, and the Kell-esque borders need a tickle, no?

BTW she appears to be right handed.

What are Napier cloths 450,? I have a silica packet in there. Usually it happens to the guns used most, the Bosis is fine, it only goes to the UK on pheasant shoots but a Perazzi SCO I have in there which goes to the range every week and is always kept oiled (as are all the guns) always gets
surface rust on it on the lock plates (bulimo engraving and a coin finish are a death knell here), under the safety etc, as it gets up to 45 deg C every summer and you sweat your balls off I guess that doesn't help, still, they are tools and I do the best i can to keep them OK, rgds, Mike

surface rust on it on the lock plates (bulimo engraving and a coin finish are a death knell here), under the safety etc, as it gets up to 45 deg C every summer and you sweat your balls off I guess that doesn't help, still, they are tools and I do the best i can to keep them OK, rgds, Mike

It looks as a large silica pack, se the link for details. First i tought it was a fraud, but a lab did some test and it apparantly works.

Mine are a bit embarrassing after seeing some of the very high quality doubles here. Anyway, here are my two.

First is a Merkel 140.2.1 in 500NE.

Next is a Chapuis UGEX in 9.3X74R.

It's a start! I have my eye on a few more for the immediate future!

I'm like HogPilot - almost hesitant to show my rather plain looking Krieghoff here, but I have a question for the group.

Thats mine on the left, and Richard's on the right.

Both are factory engraved by Krieghoff, and mine has a buffalo on the left and a black rhino on the right side.

Compared to the two sides which I think are rather nicely done, the underside is obviously very plain. So my question is this; If I find a qualified engraver to add to the bottom in more or less the same style as what already is on the rifle, do I risk ruining the gun? Am I at that point trying to make it into something that its not?

Opinions please.

Cazadero,
The engraver may not be able to engrave the modern steel of a hardened action.
They usually engrave before hardening.

Great stuff!

The VC custom shop rifles have been amazing - seemingly unlimited style options and beautiful work.

That .410/hornet -- let's see more!

Curl as always I really appreciate the rifles you find out there. The little screw grip .303 is really cool!
I wish I had more time lately to work on my steel engraving. I want to develop a golden age scroll motif of my own. Great photos!

The little Webley .303 has had its own thread here on NE.com since New Year's Day 2010: Webley & Scott .303

It still has its regulation tag with it. Regulated with Dominion Super Clean .303 Soft Nose 215 Grains.

Close to 28,000 views on one of the most successful threads on NE. Thanks to Curl. This thread has really opened up my eyes to the beauty of the belly. Often overlooked compared to the sideplates, the belly offers an extremely good platform for display.

Going through this thread again before posting the photos above, I really enjoyed the really beautiful and varied bellies displayed.

Gentlemen, please post any you have or believe are suitable for displaying here. I will post even my own poor examples. Plus any I come across from time to time.

John, that Rigby has a marvelous belly.

I'm glad you brought this thread back to life. I feel sure there are many beautiful bellies yet to display. In fact, I have a few not shown yet!

Thanks for the pics Greg!

Nice photos everyone.

Heres my attempt at entering this thread. Not in the best of shape and it's a shotgun.

E.J Churchill, boxlock ejector, XXV model (25" barrels). 12 gauge.

Maybe I'm 'old fashioned' - but I like this style too Ash!

Being a hunting rifle and not for exhibition,my Beretta GR2 DR belly has no animals, but is overall pleasing:

It is a shooter too!

Holland & Holland

The initial concept of the exquisite ‘London Gun’ was based upon the theme of ‘London World Trade’ with the River Thames being the link to the trade routes from the late 18th and 19th centuries. All of the inlaid metals are completed with gold, silver and, unusually copper – to represent the metals that were traded as currency.

The floorplate of the action features precious metal inlaid flora: poppy flowers, tea leaves and tea plants surrounding a map of lower England with a gold inlaid line striking through the Greenwich Meridian Line.
