My Karl Hauptmann Double Rifle :)
      #277701 - 09/02/16 02:20 AM

Hi,

I have for several years wanted a double rifle for dangerous game in Africa. This week my dream finally came to a reality when i bought this handmade beautiful double from Karl Hauptmann in Ferlach Austria.

The weapon is No. 074 produced in 1960. And has caliber 475 # 2 NE.

The weapon is incredibly well looked after, looks almost new with gold gilding on many of the weapon parts

To day I'm a very happy man!

Thank you

No, I havent shot with it! The stock fit my body perfectly, but I have not figured out if it is a #2 Jeffery or Eley yet. Awaiting response from Ferlach.

It is Gustav Kersten's "Double Greener crossbolt", invented in 1899, but merely protected for 6 years by aDRGM = protected design #123783. As Kersten was a military armorer,as such a government employee, he was not allowed to take a patent for his invention then. As Kersten was stationed in Strassburg, again German from 1871 to 1918, since then French Strasbourg, the breeching was also known as "Strassburger Verschluss". Though not often seen on side by sides and drillings, the Kersten lockup became virtually a standard for continental European over-unders. All the classic Merkel, Suhl, and many Ferlach made over-unders, shotguns, combinations and double rifles, feature Kersten's lockup.

I am reflecting on the first pic before read the Kudae(
congratulations for the knowledge) comment also me went in mind the Kersten and in second choice a Herkules breeching but I haven't the knowledge to give a correct comment.
This is the first side by side seen by me with Kersten someone have seen others?
Anyway great rifle

Those of you with a comprehensive collection of Double Gun Journals should revisit Vol.14 Issue 4 (Winter 2003) for a reminder of Ernst Steigleder's verschluss with three extensions!
(One on each side as pictured above, and one as a rib extension between the chambers, all cross-bolted!)
Sounds clumsy, but due to the skill of the maker it still manages to look elegant in a Teutonic sort of way....

The rifle appears to have selective ejectors. I hope that this is the case, since removing the spent cartridge cases by hand from between the projections of the Kersten Verschluss could be problematic in a tight situation.

My Krieghoff O/U double rifles with Kersten Verschluss are both so equipped and reloading them rapidly has never been a problem.

Hi everyone and thanks for congratulations.

I got a long-awaited Mail from Hauptmann today:

Quote: The rifle was regulated at that time with Kynoch .475 No.2 3½ 2 Case 480 grain bullets.
Nevertheless this does not matter as this ammo does not exist anymore. / Quote.

Is this not the Eley variant that Kynoch still load and sell?

Hi,
I think and believe these cartridges may still be ordered. 475 No.2 Eley has 480gr bullet ... or I am wrong?

I believe it is possible, their customer service is fairly quick and kindly or also you can try to contact the Norwegian dealer( Ragnar Hansen )

One question: Has Kynoch made 475 No.2 Jeffery ammunition with 480gr bullets earlier or must this be an Eley? Some important that I buy the right Woodleight bullets since Jeffery has 488 "and Eley are 483" diameter ... wonder why Hauptmann believes this ammunition no longer exists ... Hmmm.

Hello,

On Monday, I traveled to arms dealer and retrieved the rifle. I have been measured the diameter of a gunsmith to 483 ", so this is a .475 Eley # 2 NE.

- Yesterday I sent an order to Kynoch on 20 shots, cleaning equipment and wads. I booked die-set from Huntington and 20 Horneber Brass . Looking forward to testing ...

Alright im gonna stick my chin out a bit and ask what such a beauty costs?

I Love the look of that flat rib that widens as it meets the action anyone have a name for it?

Was there any smaller calibres produced with this "look"? Would Love one in a 8x57 or 9,3x74r alternativley a 375 flanged.

Very good price maybe taking into account people might believe ammo was not available for it.

Rifle appears to be in absolute excellent condition.

You might get it a try on moose at hime as well? Over gunned but just for fun?

Thank you NitroX.

Yes finished ammunition can still be purchased, but unfortunately not in Norway. No one in this country will import 475 no.2 Wolfgang Romey from Germany, so reloading will be key to success.
I bought die-set from Huntington, brass from Horneber and Woodie bullets from a niche store near where I live.

Sidelocks on the rifle:

Beautiful rifle there mate, unusual calibre, but one that will give such sterling service that it will outlive you!
Massive cartridge & recoil will be up there too; but that's why we do type of stuff & besides who want's something common - not me!
Congratulation on your new 'baby', don't forget to send in the reloading data once you've got it sorted please!
