Hi,

I have bought this rifle a couple of months ago and intend to use it for hunting.
Load after a few trials is 76 grs of H4198 behind a 650 Wly and a foam filler @ 1760 ft/s.

That is VERY nice - and it shoots very well, better than my .577 Hollis. I may try the 4198 load in the future

That is a very nice rifle! Congrats on getting it shooting so well also.
Now if I can get my Patstone 577 BPE shooting that well I'll be happy!

Thank you for the compliments guys.

Oldbrit: We have wild boar in our home area, so I will try it on them first. When I have gained some confidence, I'll try something bigger.

TH44: I use round foam bars as filler that I cut to length. They are very cheap and give no apparent residue.

I sure hope so. We have large area's of dense undergrowth and very wet swampy soil.
If They run 50 or 60 yds, it usually means you can go home and get the dog to find your quarry.

Considering the BPE load was a 650gr. at about 1,650fps - yes.

Seems to me, there are a number of letters to Greener in (The Gun - etc) about what a wonderful Elephant round it was, with the BP loading, of course.

Hi Daryl,

I thought the NfB (LC) load was 650 @ 1850 ft/s.

The original BP ballistics according to my info:

2 3/4" 520 @ 1725 ft/s and 560 @ 1650

3" 560 @ 1740, 570 @ 1725 and 610 @ 1650.

Any of those should be all right for a lung shot at elephant, but only if you feel lucky I guess.

I'll try a heavier load next time and see what happens.

Hi Paradox

Thanks for the foam filler info, I will try this for a filler, I generally use anything, dacron, cotton wool (no risk of fire on our short range!), but we certainly need a filler for "nitro for black" in my experience

The BP loads posted are similar to Bill Fleming's " British Sporting Rifle Cartridges" and are what I tend to use, although I like 4198 I have had problems in the past

I like the foam backer rod filler too.
Looks like you cut it flush with the case mouth and compress it a little when seating the bullet.
I haven't done that, just cut it to be right at the base of the bullet.
I guess in such a voluminous case the little compression is negligible and your results certainly speak for themselves!

As a long-time fan of the .577 Light Nitro cartridge, I must add my congratulations to the above.
What a lovely rifle, you will have a ball in the hunting field with this beauty!

TH44: as an aside, I'd be interested to hear details of your problems with H4198, which is our AR2207 here in Australia. Perhaps in a PM so as not to detract from Hubert's marvelous acquisition. I would have thought this powder to be a bit fast for the 650gr bullet, lot of inertia there to overcome before things get going. AR2207 was recommended to me by the previous owner of the 'Fat Lady'. Notwithstanding that Hubert's results on paper speak for themselves, I couldn't get it to work in the big Greener and found success with our H4895 equivalent.

Just one more thing: the backer-rod we buy locally is white closed-cell plastic of some sort, whereas that pictured above is the silver-grey polyurethane foam (like speaker-foam) and is far more compressible. Not sure what is available in the US, perhaps someone can clarify this? Our white backer-rod works, but I personally prefer saddle-felt wad-punched from 1/2-inch sheets. More traditional, won't go gooey in long-term storage in the tropics, and no spike on the front of the pressure curve (noted by Sherman Bell: "Finding out....").

Our backer rod here in the States is a grey closed-cell foam. You can have a look at it in the little internet article I wrote several years ago at this link.

No, I imported it from the USA. I have checked the firearms records and it turns out that I am the only one in The Netherlands with a 577 double.

That is what I do. I use open cell foam and this material is very soft. After seating the bullet, the compression is only very slight.
The weight of the filler is only 2,5 grs.

I too would be very interested in hearing about the problems you have had with 4198. Was it IMR or Hodgdons powder? What caliber were you loading with it and what powder charge? I have used alot of it to load 45-70's with good success and would like to try some in my .577 gun. Bob
