333 double
      #225452 - 17/02/13 11:45 PM

A rare classic double in 333 Jeffery, no manufacture markings except MADE IN GERMANY on the barrel rib. Most likely built in Schul, date of manufacture is March 1926, a product of the German Gun guilds, sold in India by Lyon and Lyon or maybe Mantons. The 333 was known as the Maharajas caliber, as it was the favourite of the royalty for taking tigers and panthers in India. An Holland and Holland style pistol grip- most un German. Long lenth of pull - about 14.5 inches, light and wonderfully balanced. Clamshell action with a Greener cross bolt. Restocked, has seen bad use by its first owner but still groups tight. The 500 yds leaf sight is pure optimism. Flip up moon sight for low light/night shooting. The 333 is a truly classic round (Tremendous interest in the US now abt this chambering) with its long 300 grain bullet at 2150 fps it had fantastic penetration and was used with effect in Africa for Elephant hunting.

The 333 Jeffery is a good cartridge , there is no question . But imho there was better cartridges for hunting tiger's and elefant's during that period . For example a lot of DR's 600NE have been sold to India !

You have to love the sexy lines of a nicely engraved clamshell action. And in a nice medium caliber to boot!
NICE!

Agree.

I'd almost take that over my boxlock .333 Jeffrey

Mike

Their was a superb 400/360 Underlever hammer gun
over here that shot superbly.

I nearly purchased it but went for a WR Droplock in 400/360 instead as I was unlikely to find another Droplock.

So yes, I can fully understand your thoughts !

good shooting

Just back from the UK and saw above, thanks Gryph. Have to say due to reasons beyond my control and the fact that the kids are still young, I´ll have to sell the pair of doubles in March or June at Holts unless a private buyer pitches up. Breaks my heart but needs must when the Devil drives , best, Mike

In my collection, I have five clam shell double rifles, 9.3x74R, and .450 nitro, and have seen ones in other calibers, including .405 Winchester, .500 nitro, even .600 nitro. All of mine are rat trap tight, and have never been put back on face by anyone. The clam shell action, to me, at first, wasn't too appealing, but they eventually grow on you after owning them for a time. The clam shell action, especially with square Greener crossbolt, is hell for stout, obviously made that way by the Germans in order to stand up to years of heavy hammering from firing; they succeeded immensely.

I have a clamshell in 9.3x74R that is a delightful rifle. I'm ashamed to say I've never hunted with it.

333 double,

Being a fan of the clamshells I like them in size large and small. The little guys work too:

http://forums.nitroexpress.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=221791&an=0&page=0#Post221791

I'm sure you'll be having a good time with your .333 for years to come. Please post pictures of every stamp/mark you can find on your gun, especially the receiver. Perhaps some of the German gun "experts" that follow this and other forums will be able to help identify who the maker was. There is a widespread belief among the German types that the majority if not all of the clamshell receivers were made by one or more of the Merkel concerns, such as Gebrüder Merkel (brothers Merkel) or Bernard Merkel. Other gun makers purchased these receivers "in the white" and provided them to their customers per request. Such was business as usually in the large gun manufacturing cities of Suhl and Zella-Mehlis.

Regards,

Mark
