Alexander Henry 577 3" BPE Hammerless Underlever
      #224688 - 03/02/13 07:36 PM

Hey Folks

I have been watching all the posts for years now so its a pleasure to load up a new acquisition of mine. This is a Best Grade Alexander Henry Hammerless Double Rifle chambered in 577 3" BPE. Its was sold on the 29th of March 1887 to H.R.H The Raja of Kashipur, Hari Raj Singh (1857-1911).

Hope you enjoy the photos

From, Dane

I suppose it dates at abt 1885. The recoil pad replacement is a pity but I love the canted triggers. Ne plus ultra!

Those hammerless Henrys are wonderful things!
The front sight is just the thing for tigers in low light!

What a magnificent Scottish rifle! I'm sure you will be able to find quarry suitable for it in the Northern Territory.

You wound up with a wonderful rifle! (If I had been a day sooner it would have stayed here) Congratulations!
How does it shoot?

Just a wonderful rendition of a Double. A Henry is very near the top of the list of the very best Doubles. Scottish guns are overall the nicest there is.

A hammerless, underlever BPE is just icing on the cake. Being a 577, well...........:):):)

My favorite hammerless configuration. Beautiful in such a way as only the Scots can execute!

Do you have its case and/or any original reloading tools or accessories? If so, we'd love to see some pictures of those as well!

Hammerless, Jones underlever. Fine rifle perfected by famed Scottish gunmaker. I envy you.

I would love to fine such rifle in .577/500Magnum made in the late 90s...but a 577 express would also do.:LOL

rigbymauser, would a H&H do?

I saw a dandy at the SCI show, refinished & a little too well done in a spot or to, but very nice all the same & bores looked good to me.

Wrongly marked on the card as a 577BPE, that is why I was looking at it, but 577/500 was on the action, not asking a outrageous price either !

Hey Guys,

Thanks for all the great comments, I myself am very happy to own this rifle and look forward to load development. Brass arrived today so will let you know how it goes. As for case and accessories, unfortunately they have not survived the test of time. IS anyone able to remake some of the loading tools for this rifle?

Dane

Mike Rowe can make anything you want or need. And make it look like it came with the rifle.

I´m not a collector so natually a refinished rifle would also be ok. I am in for the rifles looks and caliber.
For me the 577/500 Magnum is THE caliber of all the 500s. Ofcouse I saw Double Don had a .500 3 1/4 H&H for sale on GI here awhile ago. That gun was a drooler too.
I will use my gun for active "service" so a highly collectable gun in original tidy finish etc would I become afraid to use.

Who had the gun?. Asking price?.

Hey rigby, just curious, what is your preference for the 577/500mag ??? I have heard it alluded to being a popular tiger rifle. I have only seen one, a best WR using the full 3" nitro loading, but regulated for a very light hollow point express bullet of 270 or 340grs..........

There is a nice Rigby 577/500 BPE Magnum at Vintage Doubles and Champlin's has an Alex Henry.
There is a W.W. Greener on Gunsinternational which is attractively priced too. All Jones underlever hammer guns.

I have heared that the 577/500 is the best of the BPE .500s too. I imagine it would be from the looks of it.

Correction, Champlin's USED to have a Alex Henry..

I've never seen a reference to a full nitro 577/500 Mag. Possibly there were NfB proofs? Mine are BP proofed. The Magnum is a 3 1/8" case.

Hey Mike, It pays to read what I write before I post....:):):) Yes it should say Nitro For Black....as in "full 3" case with nitro for black loading" as opposed to the 2 3/4" case
Didn't know the Mag was a 3 1/8th case. Imagine that with a for real full cordite load, yikes :):)

It was years ago, but I do remember the "Magnum" and a adjustable mold that took different nose and base plugs. Again from a un-informed memory, but i think it was a light handy rifle.

Oh' yeah almost forgot, lets see YOUR's............
