Jeffery Sidelock 450/400 3"
      #166653 - 23/08/10 08:23 AM

I thought you might enjoy some pictures of my latest addition. I have some work to do on my photography and need to figure out why picture #1 is so small.

The target was a 4 shot group shot at 50yds with Hornady 400gr RNSP

Jim

Shame it doesn't shoot. Geez...what a great gun!
Congrats!
Any details?

It was built in 1901 based on the serial # and is a 55gr cordite gun. It has 24" barrels with Baker ejectors. The bores are in great condition and it will soon be restocked to lengthen the pull and get it back to it's original style. I'm trying to learn if it had a cheekpiece when built, based on what I have found out so far, I don't think it did. I find the engraving extremely attractive.

It has had a scope mount put on it which I have resisted doing on my vintage British guns but it was done very well and it shoots great. I can't argue with the benefits of having a gun scoped.

Thanks for the kind words.

Very tasty. BTW did you know the story of F.T. Baker and his legal fight with Westley Richards over patent infringement?

How about the case ? It seems that it doesn´t accept much longer stock ?

I don't know the story of Baker vs Westley but would love to hear it....

The case will be going back to Huey to be refit.

Somehow all the pictures were shrunk down...unfortunately, you can't see the detail on the engraving anymore.

In short Frederick T Baker patented a system of eccentric sequential cams and pushrods to cock the locks. These were not (obviously) simultaneous and WR appropriated such a system. Baker fought the case and had judgement in favour but the legal costs bankrupted him. He then (apparently) retreated into the trade and died insolvent abt 1914. Crudginton(?) has some references.

FWIW I have one of his 12 bore back action side locks; sleeved and proofed for nitro. Very nice she is with her leather case and bits.

BTW the A&D(?) fore end latch may be a later adaption. I thought a Rigby style lever might be to "period" but who knows eh?

Thanks for the information on Mr.Baker, very interesting. On this Jeffery, the forend latch is original based on the picture and description in the catalog but with these vintage guns you never know.

What's interesting about Jeffery is they went early to the short, 24" barrels and the Deeley latch. I can't recall seeing a nitro era Jeffery rifle with longer barrels... I'm sure they are out there but they would be unusual.

Jim,

That's a beautiful rifle and it looks like it shoots well too! Please add some more pictures--I would like to see closer shots of the engraving.

regards,

Jim

Thanks Jim,

I had the pictures larger to show the engraving but somehow or someone adjusted them down.

Jim,

Nobody on NE.com has messed with your pictures. I'm the official "photo snatcher" so I should know.

Feel free to email the full-size photos to me. I'll store them on the NE.com server and edit them back into your original post. My email: stephens@cfw.com

That's one fine looking rifle, and I would like to see the full size photos.

Best,
Curl

Wow Jim! What a rifle. The photos are posted, and they reveal the splendid beauty of this rifle. Congratulations.

I really like the way the fences are filed and would be interested to see a photo of the top of the action and barrels.

The fences are similar in style to the Alexander Henry hammerless .450 BPE I recently acquired.

So so accuracy, need to be careful you don't gut shoot the mouse instead of a good clean head shot.

Wow.

^ Leonard aka Lenard aka Lenord aka Le Nord. As I undertand it a consortium of Belgian suppliers to the trade. Comments?

A Leonard made Jeffery will usually have Krupp barrels and a 4 digit number on underside of barrel rib under the forend. Bob
