Can you post the text that goes with it or a direct link to the William Larkin Moore otherwise everyone has to go searching for it themselves.

At least tell us the basics - ejector, price, year made ?

Rigby changed hands in 1994 to the folks in California, that can't make a gun to save there asses. Good news is this gun was most likely produced in Belgium, and finished in London as most 1985-1993 Rigby's were.

$75,000.00 would be fair for this one.

If I wanted a "real" and real nice post WW II Rigby in 470, I'd buy this one first, for far less:

"John Rigby & Co. London England, Best Quality Boxlock Ejector, 470 NE.
Double Rifle. Mfr. in 1952, 26" Chopper Lump Steel Barrels, London Proofed
for 75 Grain Cordite 500 Grain Bullet. Fantastic Using Gun, that still Retains 98 % Blue, 98% + Varnish and 70, - 85% Original Case Color. Quarter Rib and Ramp Front Site. Single 100 Yard Fixed Rear Site, with 200 and 300 Yard Folding Leaf Rear Sights. Ramp Front Sight with Twilight Bead. Standard Greener Cross Bolt
Anson Deeley Action. Bushed Firing Pins, Ejectors, and Double Triggers.
Nice Factory Scroll Engraved Receiver, and Trigger Guard. Pretty Dark Grained, Checkered, Pistol Grip Stock, to Original Full Leather Cover Pad, with Matching Splinter Forearm.. Gold Oval in stock with the Letters LM. In it's Original Rigby
Case with all Accessories,
Dims Are: 1 5/16" X 2 1/16 " X 15 3/4 " LOP. 11 LBS.-5 Ozs.
Great Gun That's Ready for that Once in a Life Time Big Game Hunt!
$ 39,995"

Link is: http://www.daverifflegunsales.com/images/guns/g897.html

By the way, Dave's a nice fella to deal with, and may well deal off that price. True, its a boxlock rather than a sidelock, but so what for a great hunter. I've bought some bolt guns from him in the past and his descriptions are usually spot on.

I have been confused by this as well.
Can a boxlock be considered a "best" gun? I believe it can, after all, the boxlock was an "improvement" over the sidelock when introduced - fewer parts, inherently more reliable etc.
A trigger plate action is a thing of beauty - David McKay Brown ad in past DGJ's is a good look inside. They are "best" guns in most everybody's book.
Has Boss ever made a boxlock? They were "makers of best guns only" right?
I totally agree with Sinner on the current Rigbys. I have no idea what would compel anybody to buy a new Rigby.
What of this Westley? http://www.gunsinternational.com/detail.cfm?id=100019944&string=cid=494
Big bore stopper for a very unstopper price? I know nothing of this gun's quality but it looks like purely a "business" rifle.

500 it's a non ejector "C" grade gun with a Wilkes action and no intercepting sears, for $40k. Oh and it's only $18,000.00 over priced too.

For London purists no a boxlock is not a best gun.

Boss never made any boxlocks until recently for J Robertson.

The WR you speak of has been ridin pretty hard, and is a lower grade model, a shooter yes, and priced about right for the retail market.

The PH models were intended for more 'ordinary' use by game control wardens, etc. I agree with Sinner that no London maker would ever call anything but a sidelock a 'best gun.' Of course, the WR detachable lock or droplock was often built as a 'best' but they aren't from London now, are they. WR also built and still builds sidelocks. My early 1900's droplock in 476 is a 'best gun' by all the relevant criteria other than not being a sidelock. One's best, another's not quite. Not planning on tossing it out of bed for eating crackers, however. Dave

Dave

I didn't say you did write the advert for him, but you
did use the words I quoted.

And although you can have "best guns" as boxlocks,
I somehow doubt that is one of them being so plain.

I wasn't suggesting that you didn't and I wasn't miffed by your comment. I Too was having a laugh at the way a lot of these dealers describe a Plane Jane as a debutante. Nice enough gun, and clearly very well suited for using, not putting in the case to display. Dave

A "Best" gun is the one that sits in my safe, one I enjoy shooting, shoots accurately, is well balanced, and I don't owe nothin' on it.

If you are going to spend $100K on a double, why buy this one? At this level, you aren't generally going to take it out into anywhere it's going to get mucked up or scratched, even if money was no object. And if you can afford 100K for a hobby, spend about double that and buy that incredible Purdey DR Curls photographed for us. Its still for sale and given the fact that Purdey builds only a small number of DRs, a better 'buy' IMHO than the DRs currently available at the H&H site and a better 'investment.' Look at it this way, how many Purdey DRs show up for sale, anywhere or in any condition? Now ask yourself how many H&H you see. If I was buying DRs as an investment or just wanted to make sure what I spent would keep the most value down the years, I'd not hesitate to buy a Purdey.

Just my take on this and UMMV. Dave
