KEN OWEN 4- BORE UPDATE with Pictures added
      #87291 - 17/10/07 12:23 PM

I just got word from Ken that my 4 bore is being sent to the engravers for some very light engraving today! Then it gets color case hardened and should be in my hands by mid December. I have a local guy that is going to checker it and do the wood finishing. I hope the whole project is finished by the middle of January 08. It is still a little ways off, but getting closer. It regulates with 115 grains of Blue Dot instead of Ken's regular load of 112 grains. It is left handed and has 24" barrels. I am starting to get excited!!

You're a better man than I, Gungadin. I'd be getting scared.

Paul, it will kick a little more than my 700 nitro, but it will weigh another 8 or 9 pounds. This should tame the recoil some.

Sounds like a treat!
: I don't know how the smokeless loads compare with black powder in the 4 bore, as in 12 bore guns, smokeless loads kick only about 1/2 as much as the heavy 7 dram BP load. A 14 dram 4 bore BP load produces more than 200 pounds of recoil in a 20, or so pound gun. Not for the timid, or perhaps one who wishes his retinas to remain attached.

Ken is supposed to be sending me some pictures. As soon as I get them, I will get Boomie to post them. My gun will weigh between 26 and 27 lbs. The 115 grains of blue dot will push the 2000 grain bullets out to about 1590 ft./sec. for about 11,200 ft.lbs of smacking power.

The recoil calculator shows 143 ft.lbs at 18 ft/sec. for the 4 bore. This is way less than a 13 1/2 lb 600 overkill with full loads. It has 192 ft.lbs of recoil at 31 ft/sec. That is a hand full.

If a big one charges, you won't feel the recoil at all. I have heard the 4-bore rifle can set a big man back one-and-a-half paces, though. This could be handy if the elephant falls at your feet.
Cheers.

Pretty exciting, but I just can't get Selous words from my mind. I'm referring to him relating about how the 4 bores effected his nervous system and destroyed his shooting abilities.
; Of course, his 4 bores were single shot shotguns, maybe 14 to 16 pounds. Black powder kicks considerably more than smokeless duplication as well. I found that out wiht the 12's.
; Good luck.

Yes Bigdog, please post pictures when you get it. A nice 4 bore for light game huh?

After I finish the 2 bore --------- do you think you will look for something bigger?
(just incase the 2 doesn't have enough power)
HAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA!

Who's doing the engraving? Ken Own does 1st class metal work. I hope it's a real beauty.
Keep in touch.
Steve

Ken had a good friend from New York do the little bit of engraving that it has on it. Then he had Doug Turnball do the color casehardening on it.I will post a few pics of it, but I want to get the checkering and finish on it asap. A local guy is doing the checkering, again, nothing fancy, just a good clean checkering, with an oil sheen finish. How the hell is a guy to get any sleep 2 days before picking up such a gun??? Steve what do you think, about another 3 months on the barrel for our project?

I have emailed pictures to post of the last Owen 4 bore to ever be made to Bulldog 563. I hope he can get them posted soon. A few of the pics compare the sizes of a 470 Merkel double, my 700 searcy, and the 4 bore. remember , the 4 bore wood is not finished or checkered yet, but the rest is complete. What do you think of the color case hardening?

Rip,
I took the wood off of it Sunday evening and gave it to my wood guy to checker and finish it. It was raining on Sat. when I picked it up from Ken Owen so I did not have a chance to shoot it. My wood guy looked at it and did not want to take it a part, so I did with 4 calls to Ken during that time. I am no gunsmith and I had to remove the side and bottom plates to get the stock off. I hope I remember where everything goes when it comes time for reassembly. If not, Ken has infinite patience and will have to help me over the phone again. We had lunch at his house on Sat and talked guns all afternoon. He is a really good guy. One thing became apparent, Ken knows a lot more about guns than I ever will. I don't consider myself a newbie after 25 years of collecting and shooting, but compared to him I am a true novice.I should get the gun back to reassemble in about 4 to 6 weeks. Then, time to go shooting! Steve thanks for the update on the barrel. Bulldog, thanks as always for posting the pictures.

The gun weighs appx 27 lbs. I have a scale that goes to 1/4 oz and up to 25 lbs. When I get it back, I will weigh the pieces and add it up to be accurate. Safari Kids 4 bore weighs 26 lbs, and mine has an extra 1 12" of barrel to it.
