Rigby ruined the 350 when they rechambered it.

Prices seem high to me.

The Holland 375 is + 45k. I would buy the Gibbs but I am already engaged in another transaction right now.

The proof marks on the Churchill are the oddest looking Birmingham marks I've ever seen. In fact, I think they're fake.

500:

The mark "Cordite 75 GR - 500 bullet" was never used by the British

Under the 1887 rules, this mark on a .470 would read: "75 GRS - 500 GRS BULLET Max'm"; or "Cordite 75GRS - BULLET 500 GRS Max'm. Birmingham sometimes used "BALL" instead of BULLET, and sometimes used "GR" instead of "GRS". It did vary a little, the idea being to get the information on there. The mark that is present simply isn't correct though. Moreover, this style of mark was used only during the 1887-1904 period and was NEVER used with a dedicated Nitro Proof mark. The rest of the marks present are all 1904 rule or later. In 1904 the new mark became "Cordite 75 - 500 MAX", which was used until 1955.

Crown over BP, Crown over BV, and Crown over NP were all introduced in 1904. They don't go with the 1887 style mark above.

From the 1887 rules forward, the bore mark for a .470 NE was always "470EX", never ".470". "EX" was always used for an express rifle. Note the decimal point in ".470". Neither Brit Proof House has ever used one with this mark.

The case length mark (3.25") was introduced in the 1925 rules, and was in use until 1989.

The marks on that rifle aren't even a good fake. Scroll back through the Photo Archives section and look at the Proof Marks on British rifles in the photos and compare them to this rifle. You'll see what I mean.

I am up to speed on proof marks, I was in a hurry to go out for the day and I just can't access my books quickly ATM
so it was easier to ask you to outline them !!!'

Now that you have, I will go and have another look
and get my book.

Hell, It may even motivate me to stp work and get a few guns out to compare !

Thanks.

Hmm

I found a new dealer then or???

Is he worth putting in the double dealers section on here?

The 500 bpe's worth the prices or not?

Noticed the Kavanagh 20 bore cased with bits? Well i dont like Damascus barrels......but otherwise seems like a bloody good price,no???

Some seem hellishly steep.......

Thanks for info

Ben

empire

Subject to bore condition and a manual inspection by someone,
I think the Grant is in the money.

Not sure why he has it priced there, either something isn't right with it or whatever.

He's a bit over on some of them though !

The Horsley seems to be traveling a bit. I noticed it is currently on the market at Champlin's website for $12,900, which I consider a very reasonable price for that rifle (assuming it is in the same condition as when I parted with it early last year).

empire

Their are heaps of dealers out there
that I am still finding on the net
after 7 years or so of looking and searching.

Why don't you fly over and go an see ?
I would and have done similar on many occasions.

It's not that expensive and peanuts compared
to the cost of a gun - or the cost of a mistake !

I noticed that too, but it isn't the same. Curl's is stocked to the fences, while this one is not.

Yet another Holland "Royal" with a "flatback" action and a through lump. So much for the hard and fast rule about what a "best" gun is supposed to be.

Nigel and Gatsby...

I have half considered the flight idea, this chap never answers though.

Main plan is i shall go back to Blighty and see some of the guys there, pop into an auction or something too.

The double game is surely a tough one......

I am praying for a 577 to turn up........the 500 is very good sure, the 450 is also a nice round, but the 577 is 'king of the hill' as a bpe round, though perhaps even more so is the 577/500 or 20/577 as these give more speed.

All the best and thanks.......

Ben

Curl,
I don't think that gun really has any assisted opening or "assistant" opening as it's spelled in the description.
I think they are looking at the "strange buttons" on the action flats and are assuming they provide assisted opening when, as we both know that is not the case, as they serve an entirely different purpose.
What do you think?

That 461 is a ripper - CCH and all.

Must check back as a minty one - maybe a target rifle
went for a huge amount not so long ago in either the UK
or here.

As I said before I would buy the Gibbs but my finances are engaged right now. That is a nice gun. It may be a tad high in price considering what it would take to bring it in to the country but not by much.

The .461 in a Gibbs Rifle in good nic is quite rare
these days and tend to command high prices and from
what I have seen, higher than what they have it for.

I like the cased Kavanagh a LOT,

But i also like the seemingly mint Manton......equal to the Grant but also nicer in design and condition....case hardening et al.

Hmm, how come these guns have a 'renovated' feel to them via the eye??? Is it just me or does something seem wrong??

The 20 bore is nice, and what is wrong with damascus? Get some more photos and bore measurements, then buy what YOU like. The Holland and the Gibbs are the items most likely to increase in value IMO.

We had a thread on this a while back, at which time I didn't understand them either, but now I own a Scott sidelock fitted with mechanical cocking-rod retractors so I'm now 'enlightened'!
The small 'plungers' in the action flats are depressed into the flats by closing the barrels, whereby they engage angled surfaces on the cocking rods, thus withdrawing the cockers from their contact with the tumbler breasts. These devices persisted on Scott-made guns for some time prior to the realization that they were entirely unnecessary!

This pic should explain all:

Hope this helps.

Yeah, the idea being to allow the tumbler to "fall" with maximum energy without it having to push the cocking lever/rod out of the way.
Also called Cocking Release Rods, Buttons or Plungers.

O/U shotguns and rifles often use light spring pressure to return the cocking rods to a forward position, totally clear of the tumblers, which achieves a similar result.
