Finally joined the DR club with a Baikal 9.3x74R
      #73809 - 14/03/07 07:41 AM

Finally picked up my Baikal 9.3x 74 R after a four months wait. The rifle is a very plain no frills basic o/u double rifle with extracters and double triggers. The triggers are very heavy at the moment but this going to be addressed by a local gunsmith who has worked on several of these rifles with great success. The barrels are 24" long. The rear site is adjustable for windage and the front site is adjustable for elevation. There is a regualting device halfway along the between the barrels. Turn it clockwise and it moves the impact of the top barrel down and the impact of the bottom barrel up. I had the pick of five of these weapons that McDonalds Guns in Footscray, Victoria (03. 96871680)and got one with a reasonable bit of fiddleback timber in the stock. I would love to own a classic sxs but at the moment it is very hard to justify the expense, so I will enjoy using this rifle just as much until something better arrives.

At the range with some RWS 258 grain Factory loads and 12 reloads with 270 grain speer and 2209. The first 2 shots with the factory loads at 50 yards went into 1 3/4 inches. With this load at 100 yards the first 3 shots went into 3" and the fourth shot opened it out to 5".

The first 2 shots with reloads at 50 yards went into about 2". Increasing the load by 1/2 grain of 2209 the next 2 shots went into 1 1/4 inches. I did not have enough ammunition to play around with the regulating device . All shooting was done with a scope fitted.

Shot the rifle in competition the next day and went through about 60 rounds without a hitch and was very pleased with the performance. Now I have to get down to proper regulating the loads. I would like to be able to shoot the Woodleigh 286 grain projectiles for hunting and the 270 grain speers for competition. Will let you know how it goes.

Congratulations on your purchase! Is it possible to regulate the barrels sideways?

Thank you Nighthawk.

There is no way to regulate the barresl sideways. Load developement might assist. At this stage there does not appear to be a need for sideways regulation as the groups are vertical stringing more than horizontal.

Thanks 500Nitro.

It is something that I have always wanted, but I can't justify the money for a classic DR as much as I try. The Baikal has its draw backs, but it will still be a great deal of fun and a good learning curve.

Looking forwarded to meeting you. Are you coming to the BGRC Nationals in July?

450

I used to be a bit negative towards Baikal et al DR's
but have changed my view - the more DR users the better
is how I look at it now !

My only objection is when someone compares a
Baikal, Remington/Fabarm etc to a "vintage"
gun in terms of quality.

July Nationals - may be if I am not away hunting
or on business !

500Nitro.

A comparison will most likely happen, but I can tell you I am as proud of my DR as they are of theirs. Mine will shoot and handle better than some, and not as good as others. It will never be a Purdey, or a H & H. I do not expect it to be. It is a sows ear. In a hunting situation it will drop them as good as any other 9.3x74R. It is the nut behind the butt that counts. At $1400.00 who can complain.

Good luck with your hunting.

Congratulations on the new double and like everyone else has said, welcome to the club!

I must say that I too cannot afford a vintage British Double (that I lust after) with a young family and mortgage etc. but the Bakail's do offer a chance for us newbies to experience the joy of hunting, shooting and talking about double rifles.

I would LOVE a 9.3x74R as I have easy (relatively) access to buffalo hunting in the NT being a former resident, and with all of my family still living there; and would like a big gun to hunt them with. The only thing is that I have to somehow convince the other half of this excruciating need.

Might take a trip to McDonald's to see the rifles and fondle one off the shelf. This is how all the trouble starts! When is the next BGRC shoot and who on here will attend, look forward to meeting any NE members.

Congrats!

Im very envious, here in the US I was only able to find a O/U 30-06. Of course I wanted a classic SxS or even a Baikal SxS. After that I searched for some of the metric calibers in the O/U's but none are to be found here. I was lucky to find the 30-06. The nice thing was, I only paid $279.ooUSD from CDNN.

Congrats again 9.3x74 is a great world wide caliber. I like to think of the Baikals as a working gun. Sure I have pretier guns but like some prety gals they done like to get scratched up running through the woods.

I just wanted to mention that long ago i chronographed some factory RWS 258 H Mantles in my Valmet 9.3x74R double and they averaged 2,269 fps... That will give you an idea where they are at for velocity...

Thanks gentlemen.

Michael.

The next BGRC shoot is down for the 15th April.About 10.00am I will be attending. If you do attend make your self known to me. If you want to have a shot I will have several rifles there. There is six events listed. This means I will have 9.3x74R , 458 Win or 450 NE, BSA 303 (1900Manufacture) .310 cadet. Michael, PM me with an email address if you need details on how to get there. It is a great way to spend the day and to see some really class DR which some times you get a shot out of or you can like me stand and drool. The members are very friendly bunch.

Thanks Nitrox.

I have not had much to do with this calibre. I did have a 9.3x62 mauser but it was a very willing casualty to help me meet the cost of the DR. I like the 9.3x74R as it is a low pressure cartridge, very pleasant to shoot and it meets the BGRC group 1 nitro specs. It will also be a hunting rifle for sambar and if I get up north, pigs, and buffs. I enjow you posts.

Wayne.

Well I have fired nearly one hundred rounds through the rifle now and it is very intersting process regulating the loads. At the range yesterday with various loads for testing ranging from 250 grains Ballistic tips, 250 grain woodleighs, 270 grain speers and 286 grain RWS. All loaded with 2209.

First to go were the RWS. Vertical stringing 15". two shots from each barrel. each barrel group it's 2 shots into 1 1/2 inches. The Bottom Barrel shot the high group and the top barrel shot the low group. All shooting at 50 yards. Now if I understand this correctly, that should indicate to much velocity. BUT

The next load had 1/2 grain more 2209, this group was 9" verticle. Bottom barrel still high and the top barrel low. Both barrels group it's 2 shots very well.

250 grain BT. right on the money at 50 yards 2 3/4 for four shots. Agood composite group.

250 grain woodleighs, 5".

270 grains speers. 8" vertical spread, each barrel grouping it's 2 shots into 1 1/2. But again the top barrael shooting the low group and the bottom barrel shooting the top group.

I have just finished reading Wrights book on shooting the English double rifle (mine is a Russian).
The only difference with mine is it has a regulating device between the barrels and I decided to try it. Moving the screwnut 3 clicks anti clock wise the next four 270 grain speers went into 3" at fifty yards. The damn thing actually worked. I then ran out of reloaded ammunition.

RWS factory loads were then used with the best group of four shots going into 1 1/2 at fifty yards and that is about as good as these old eyes can do with open sites.

I have found this gun to be a very solid gun and I have not any hiccups yet.(not expecting any). Next week it goes into have the triggers tuned up, and a scope rail fitted. The rifle is easy to use comes to the shoulder and swings nicely. I am looking forward to more testing with the scope on. For a entry level DR Ithink it is a good thing and a great calibre that 9.3x74R.

I, too, wish we could get them in 9,3X74R here in the US. My 94 BBF Baikal in 12/7X57 is a tack driver. I believe that the "Bubbah" connection still rules the roost here, and if it ain't 'murrican, we don't need/want it... Evidence Remington's intention to import the SXS, but only in 30-06 and 45-70, and they dropped the 7X57 from the Interarms/Charles Daly/798 line, as well as supplying barreled actions.

450, I envy you your 9,3X74R in a tough, accurate, affordable gun. I would spring for one in a heartbeat, if we could get them.

450,

Very nice! Now that you have a nice rifle that you're going to use a lot, why not post pictures of her here? Do show her off!

It was a very wise decision to buy an unembellished gun. You won't have to worry about marking it when you hunt and you would hunt more as a result. Which is exactly how it should be!

Good hunting!

Man that is a mouth full. I would love to put pictures of my rifle on the site. One problem, I am computer illiterate. I have a good digital camera and I have some photo in my own files, but that is the best I can do. If anyone can help, I would give it a go.

Shot the rifle on the weekend. At 100 yards I used the top barrel with open sites and shot a 1 1/8 3 shot group. (witnessed) I have trouble doing that with a scoped rifle. Now I am working on regulating the two barrels which will be done when I get it back from the gunsmith on Friday. The triggers were 11 1/2 pound and now they are 5 1/4 pound each. I have had a scope rail fitted.

Hey 450,
I put up the pics for SafarKid's 4 bore. PM or e-mail your pics & I'd be happy to post them. I'm interested in seeing your gun myself as I'm contemplating getting that very same rifle & caliber.
