In the SE USA, long shots are 75 yards because there is so much vegetation. You can see deer at a longer distance (well bits and pieces of teh deer) but there is too much vegetation in the way for a clean shot. The last deer that I shot was about 40 yards away. I initially saw him when he was probably 100 yds away and let him amble closer to where I could see a good kill shot. I shot him with my BSW in caliber 8x57IR.

Next year, I think I will hunt with a drilling to change the routine.

When I hunt with my wife's relatives on their land in western Maryland, there's a mix of terrain, none of flat! Typical Appalachian mountains, elev 2500-3000 ft. Short shots are 20 yards in the hardwoods and laurels. Firelanes can easily go 100yrds and the one open field (from a strip mining effort 40 years ago) has shots to 400 yards if one were good enough and so inclined, although in deer season, bucks avoid the open spaces.

This fall I'll either be back in Minnesota or up in Maryland. I don't have access to private land here in North Carolina, and to me it's worth the travel to have better control of who you're in the woods with when the light is coming up pre dawn.

Chris,

Your hunting land in both Minnosota and Maryland sound wonderful. I like hunting and just hiking in the Appalachian mountains and their foothills. The mountains and foothills are beautiful at sunrise. Of course, dragging a deer out of mountainous terrain can be hard work.

Does Maryland have a lot of deer and are they fairly large?

I believe that the Minnosota deer are generally much larger than those in Georgia.

Roy,

The Minnesota deer are much bigger than their warm country kin. Maryland is more like MN. I think the MN deer I was hunting, like what I used to hunt in Wisconsin, benefit from nearby farms as well.

I've been lucky to have friends and relatives with land -- and ATVs.

Chris
