Double Gun Journal - RIP
      #368623 - 24/08/22 08:54 PM

Many will agree that the Double Gun Journal fostered much of the revival of interest in double shotguns and double rifles. Sadly, it has announced its demise: https://www.thedoublegunjournal.net/

For many years I subscribed faithfully, primarily for the content concerning double rifles. Eventually, there came a time several years ago when, for me, the articles became repetitious. The content seemed to drift away from double rifles. I let my subscription lapse. All good things come to an end. I had seen that happen with other gun-related subscriptions in the past.

Still we owe a debt of gratitude to the publisher, and it is with sadness that I think of the Double Gun Journal passing. They did a great service to the double gun community and should be fondly remembered.

I have resisted the thought that the new generation of gun enthusiasts focuses solely on bolt and semi-auto rifles. Perhaps this development attests to the reality.

RIP Double Gun Journal.

Single issue reader from time to time-doubles not my special interest. What a valuable resource lost.

I would love to see compilation of all the Sid Bell articles. What a resource that would be.

Hell's Bells, I've been operating for 20 years at a loss.

I liked buying their magazine and used to cost retail $35 an issue at a city book store. A long time ago ...

I subscribed from time to time. Delivery was unreliable. I never got a full year's issues. One year I got 5 copies of the same issue all stuck together ... Now I knew what was happening to my paid for issues never received.

I tried a year or three ago to subscribe again. As an international subscriber it was like jumping through fire hoops backwards blindfolded. Never succeeded, gave up.

Are they going to continue with a website. I noticed lots of advertisers once. None or fewer mentioned recently.

Most businesses expect a free ride on forums, chat groups, pages, etc now. And/or run pages or groups on anti gun Farcebook.

Btw members really need to support forums like NitroExpress.com if they want these forums and sites to continue. They're free, but do welcome donation support. But interaction is a small expectation. Including from long term members. Farcebook is not an alternative.

Looking at the lack of replies on the ezine pdf books and magazine articles, ie the discussion threads perhaps it's time to restructure the forums. Mostly members only access i.e.logins required to read. Especially for the pdf files forums Maybe ONLY an "advertising" forum might stay public. Just ideas. Something will eventually happen.

Regarding the magazine, I'd love to do a yearbook. DGJ did quarterly issues, maybe actually deliver one or two if a subscriber was lucky ... Modern advertisers prefer regular magazines, monthly. Quarterly might work. An annual or yearbook not much at all. Doesn't work for the release of the latest re- invent the wheel wannabe cartridge and plastic rifle.

True vintage classic firearms are a diminishing market ... But are they?

I realised through NitroExpress.com years ago, it is not mass market. Aiming to become a huge forum, a huge Facebook page or group is just denigrating our topic. How many which is better the .204 Ruger or the .223 ? Do we need? Or why the 6.5 Creedmoor is doubleplusgood compared to a cartridge created maybe 129 years ago which is actually better.

Better we keep to our core vintage and classics. Double Rifles of course. We were the FIRST website to specialise in Double Rifles, not Double Gun shotguns. . Lots of pretenders since then.

Personally I'd like to see the Double Gun Journal magazine continue. But let's face it printed magazines are dying. Printed newspapers are dead. I've stopped using printed fake news newspapers completely. I've started buying specialist weekly weekly political magazines such as the Spectator and .

Digital magazines arecoften such total crap. The good old informative articles are often advertiser drivel. Articles written by the good seemingly by an automatic app. Push out quantities of text rather than quality. The internet was supposed to be the rebirth of good literature. Instead it's become the crack cocaine 5 second or 5 minute fix. "Hey that long informative structured grammatically correct article is too much effort to read!"

I DO ENJOY reading these old intelligent well written articles on the NE ezine archives. So much better than 95% of the hack articles today.

Btw articles in the Westley Richards Explora are good. More for the gun oorn pictures than the writing.

Enough whinging. Gentlemen, keep the contributions inflowing. Write some articles to contribute. Showcascyour fine guns. Especially share hunting stories and photos! Particularly if with classic firearms. Though plastic stocked ones will do too.

I peruse FB every day more so to see what friends and family are up to.. its quick and easy.. and I'm pressed for time.. every day.. lots of stuff in the air trying to keep moving..

BUT, I secured a good hunt this fall for my son, who is able to "legally" hunt deer in Montana as well as duck, geese and upland game.. Gave him a Tikka in .243 for Christmas.. put a Leupold 3-15 VX5 on it .. so he is good to go for the hunt.. we are hiking in to a badlands area I hunted for 28 years... going to set up camp and hunt out of a tent for a few days.. REALLY looking forward to that time.. been dreaming of this day for a long time..years.. Will send photos

Grabbed him a youth model 20 gauge that I saw for sale a few weeks back in a local gun shop.. plan to give that to him next week for his birthday.. so the upland game issue will be taken care of as well... we have a lot of Hungarian partridge on the ranch..so will give him plenty of practice..

Too bad about the journal, I read that frequently ..have copies of it in my office and at the ranch.. nothing lasts forever..enjoy it while you can..

Sad to see it go. Subscribed for a number of years, but then price to UK went ridiculous. Wanted to charge $25 an issue postage.

Great magazine. Lots of really nice photos. More like a soft cover book than a typical magazine. Although most of the Double Gun Journal concerned shotguns, they did put out good articles on double rifles and single shots from time to time.

I've always liked the way DGJ featured vintage firearms and their histories and so I have accumulated a number of different issues over the past 25 years or so. Back when I started buying them, I believe I paid $12.99 (US) per issue at retail bookstores like Barnes and Noble. At that time, most gun magazines cost like $5, so comparably, DGJ was pretty expensive. However, most of the those I have collected over the years are older issues that I found in second-hand bookstores and I paid about $3 to $5 a piece for them. Luckily for me, people usually take pretty good care of DGJ issues and just about every used copy I've purchased has been in excellent shape. So, whenever I come across an issue I don't have, I'll pick it up as long as the price is right.

I too am sad to see it go. I doubt we'll ever see a magazine like it again. I mean, I realize everything is going digital these days, but curling up next to a warm fire on a quiet evening with a good "laptop", "iPad"or "Nook Book" just isn't the same thing to me...

I subscribed for 20 years or so, I had a year left on my current subscription when they shut down. They let me use the unused portion on some books they had in stock. I agree there were a lot more shotguns than double rifles in last few years but I still looked forward to every issue. When I talked with them on the phone they said they were going to do a few books on fine guns and they were going to print a 3rd index volume (they have a 1&2 readers index). At least we have that to look forward too.
