>500/450 nitro loads
      #36070 - 18/08/05 09:50 PM

Hello all,

I have been lurking here for a while, and felt that you are just the group to help me out.

I would like to know if anyone has a pet load for the .500-450 nitro that they could share.

I have shot factory Kynoch out of my rifle, and it shoots spot on with the right barrel, and about 2" left and 2" high with the left. This seems to be the load the rifle was regulated with. A duplication of this load would be great!

Thank-you, SXS

SXS:

Welcome to the club.

I don't have any loads for the 500/450, but I'm sure someone on here does.

Are you shooting new Kynoch rounds?

If this forum turns up dry, you may consider sending the rifle to superior ammo and let them work up a load for you. GREAT, HONEST and RELIABLE people up there in SD. Will probably cost a few bucks, but will be cheaper in the long run.

Oh, are you in the States? What DR do you have?

Hi, welcome.

This is the load I used in my Holland U/L Hammer 500/450 Nitro.

It is the same (or similar) load to what is in Graeme Wrights book
Shooting the British Double Rifle" - which isn't surprising as it was
Graeme Wrights gun !!!

Case Primer ADI Powder Gns Bullet

Bell Fed 215 2213 100 480 gn Woodleigh

I am not sure which country you are in so if someone here knows which powder
is the equivalent overseas for ADI 2213, could you please post the answer.

I would start a bit below 100 grains - say 96 - 97 grains.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Post again if you have any other questions.

MULWEX 2213 is comparible to IMR4831

If your rifle is proofed for full Cordite load of 75.0 grs cordite, with a 480 gr bullet, then the IMR 4831 load would be:

75.0 grs Cordite X 1.33 = 99.75 grs IMR 4831

Or: for RL 15

75.0 grs cordite X 1.19 = 89.25 grs of RL 15

These are starting loads, and are low! they will most likely shoot wide, and high, and need speeding up,to bring them down, and back together on the target.

Both require the use of filler in the case between the powder, and the base of the bullet, to avoid a flame over, giveing high pressure spikes! Dacorm fiberfill, available at any faberic shop it is dacron pillow stuffing. You should use enough so that the filler is slightly compressed when the bullet is seated.

If however your rifle is only proofed for Nitro for Black express, then these loads are not for it!

load for Nitro for black is:

52.0 grs cordite with a 375 gr bullet factory load

52.0 grs of cordite X 1.33 = 69.16 grs of IMR4831

OR:

52.o grs of cordite X 1.19 = 61.88 grs of RL 15

both with a 365 gr bullet!

CAUTION: especially the loads for the Nitro for black need filler even more! Proceed slowly with the work up of any loads with these formulas!

My load for my rifle is 105.o grs IMR 4831, with a 480 gr Woodliegh soft ppoint, and 104.0 with a 480 gr Woodliegh steel jacketed solid. But that is "MY" rifle, and I did not start with that load, I worked it up from those two formulas!

Good evening,

I should have given more info regarding my rifle etc.

It is an H&H 500-450 nitro weighing 10# 4oz. It is proofed for the tropical 70 gr. cordite load, and a 480 gr. bullet.

I shot new Kynoch loads and found the right barrel to hit exactly at point of aim at 50 yards from a standing rest, as I said before, the left barrel printed 2in. left and 2 in. high. I shot 2 pair. the first pair were about 3/4 in. higher than the second. I expected this from clean barrels.

I have loaded for many double rifles, and am aware of the process, I was just hoping someone might have the Kynoch formula, and save me a few trips to the range.

I have Graeme's book, but did not find any loads for the 500-450, but I could have missed them.

Thanks for the answers so far, It looks like 4831 is the powder of choice. Dies, cases, and bullets should be here soon. New Kynoch at $16 a shot has me mumbling in my beard!

All the best, SXS

The load for your gun is in Graeme Wright's book.

My rifle is written up on pages 86 in his book, as (Quote)
"Using my records the very best groups that I have obtained at 50 yards are as follows.
A H&H 500/450 x 3 1/4" - 0.8 inches (4 shots) "

Believe me, the gun shot as well as the book says all of the time so I sometimes
wonder why I sold it.

It sounds like you are on a winner - try changing the SEATING DEPTH of the bullet
- I have found this can make a difference, especially when you want to make small differences
once you have the correct velocity / rough regulation like you have.

Anyway, good luck.
