A Special Custom Double Rifle to Hunt Rare Dangerous Game in Wisconsin

Hello All,

I've brought this over to share with the readers here.

I expect most of you have probably never seen these rare Dangerous Animals before. Well, they have infiltrated the suburbs here in Wisconsin. It is believed they mutated by drinking the discharge water from one of our Nuclear Power Plants. Subsequent in-breeding has further altered their ravenous behavior to the point that unprovoked attacks on animals and people have become an all to often serious occurrence.

.
.
.

Here are a few pictures of various mutations of the vicious WISCONSIN KILLER RABBIT.

.
.
.
.
.

... ...

.
.
.

So, I have taken it upon myself to help combat these satanic creatures.

As you know, a Double Rifle is designed for that quick second shot in case the dangerous animal charges. Such is the case here. If the first shot fails to stop a charge, the second shot is quick to finish the job. Although I have a battery of double rifles to choose from, ranging in calibers from 7x65R, up-to 700 NE, none of them really fit the bill for the task at hand, namely hunting these Dangerous Animals.

I needed a very special Double Rifle. It had to be in a caliber that was quiet for use in populated suburban areas, and it had to be fast-handling for the quick and nimble game to be hunted. It also had to be light weight to carry - in case a rapid run-away departure was required to retreat from a charging pack of the killers.

So .... I contacted Aaron Little to build me a Special Double Rifle of my design. It would be used exclusively to Hunt-Down and Kill these Mutated WISCONSIN KILLER RABBITS. You may recall that Aaron built my custom 700NE back in 2016. Information was posted here .. http://forums.nitroexpress.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=280803&page=0&fpart=1&vc=1

As he had done for me in the past, Aaron came through with a wonderful rifle, specifically designed for the upcoming hunt of these Vicious Devils. As expected, the workmanship is absolutely Flaw-Less.

Here are the specifications:

Make: A.M. Little Bespoke Custom Armsco Box-Lock
Caliber: 25 acp
Action: Engraved Scalloped Boxlock w/ Extractors
Barrels: Monoblock 23-1/2" Lothar Walther
Rear Sight: 2 Leaf Express Rear Sight - 1 Standing, 1 Folding on Raised Quarter Rib
Front Sight: Raised Ramp with Gold Bead and Flip-up Ivory Night Sight
Stock: Checkered Straight Grip AA Fancy Turkish Walnut w/ checkered Butt Plate
Forend: Checkered AA Fancy Turkish Walnut w/ Deeley Release
LOP: 14-5/8"
Weight: 6 pounds 11 ounces - 6 pounds 11.1 ounce loaded
Safety: Non-Automatic

Muzzle Energy: 90 ft/lbs
Recoil Energy: 1/10 ft/lbs

Regulation: 30 yards

.
.
.

Here are some pictures.

.
.
.

Regulation was tested with 3 kinds of Factory Ammo. Future hand-loads are sure to improve performance.

.
.
.

Never before has the World seen a center-fire Double Rifle in such a diminutive caliber as the 25acp. As a side note, this is a true ONE-OF-KIND. Once all the WISCONSIN KILLER RABBITS have been eradicated, I'm sure to have a lot of fun shooting this one along side my 700NE. Its great to have the BIGGEST and the SMALLEST Double Rifle in my collection. I now have a Double Rifle in a really big center-fire caliber, and one in a really small center-fire caliber. So, now I'm ready for anything on the planet.

.
.
.

Comparing the ballistics of these two extreme double rifles shows following:

Weight:
700NE = 18 lbs 10 oz
25acp = 6 lbs 11 oz

Bullet Weight:
700NE = 1000 gr
25acp = 50 gr

Bullet Velocity:
700NE = 2000 ft/sec
25acp = 890 ft/sec

Recoil Energy:
700NE = 150 ft/lb
25acp = 1/10 ft/lb

Muzzle Energy:
700NE = 8,900 ft/lbs
25acp = 90 ft/lbs

.
.
.

By the Way ...... The rifle performed flawlessly ..

.
.

Perfect!

Will you be using softs or solids on those vicious creatures?

What about back-up in the event of a charge?

How can you stand the recoil? You are a tough hombre!

Thanks for sharing.

Interesting choice of calibre, I always thought a 22wmr or hornet might be great choices fir a small game double.
I dud see one in 22lr once based on a 410sxs.

But that's a beautiful gun and should be great for all kinds of small game.

Rather odd…but interesting and it works. 90 ft/ibs today is what a good powerful airgun does in .25cal.

Buckstix: Do you reload for the .25acp?…just wondering.

POWERFUL indeed, comparing to my PCP air rifles in .25 that develop 45fpe.
Same velocity but with lighter projectiles in the 25/26gr. range.
The .25ACP headspaces on the case mouth, I assume.

Nice rifle.

Peter Hofer (corrected from Fuchs) made a very small, light weight .17 double rifle. For a huge price tag. Featured somewhere on NE.

I have long wanted a little dr bunny slayer. I would go for a .22 Hornet. And tried a couple of times.

Good luck with your charging rabbit grey death slayer.

Hello CptCurl,
Thanks for the reply.
I will be testing loads with various bullet types and weights. I even have a set of Corbin Swage dies in .251 diamster coming to make my own custom bullets.

Hello 260rem,
Thanks for the reply.

Over the years, I've seen several double rifles in those calibers. I wanted a double rifle in a small centerfire caliber that no one has built before.

Hello rigbymauser,
Thanks for the reply.

Yes, I reload for 25acp. I once has a Mauser single shot in that caliber.

Hello Daryl_S
Thanks for the reply.
The 25acp is a semi-rimmed cartridge. You can see the rim recess in the chambers in photo 14 & 15.
It extracts flawlessly.

Hello 93x64mm,
Thanks for the reply.

As I stated above, I wanted a small center-fire double rifle in a cartridge that no one has built before. I wanted a true "one-of-a-kind".

Hello NitroX,
Thanks for the reply.

I also wanted a caliber that was legal for hunting in all States. Many required 25 cal minimum.

I kind of wanted one in 44mag, but the beauty of building one on is you can have any style and any weird and wonderful calibre you want.
There's something great about having something completely out of the box that makes you smile, and that's what a good gun should do.

Make you smile every time you pick it up or fire it, no gun can do anything better then that.

Hello 260rem,
Thanks for the reply.

You nailed it! That's why I built this. I displayed it at a Gun Show last weekend along side my 700NE. The 25acp got more attention the the 700NE. I spent the whole weekend smiling.

Here's an update:
Hand-loading went OK, but I found loading these tiny missiles was a bit difficult with my stubby fingers. Results are promising. First shots were a bit wider than later shots. It took me a bit to get used to the lack of violent recoil.

I've got a set of Corbin Swage dies coming to try some "out-of-the-box" heavier bullets. I'm anxious to see how they do.

Hello All,

Today I tested some Cast Lead bullets. I think I've found my hunting load.

With a muzzle velocity averaging 1160 fps, it developes 150 ft/lbs muzzle energy with over 110 ft'lbs remaining at 65 yards. (about max distance for a clean head shot given the accuracy)

That's really nice. Surprising performance from that tiny case. Almost looks like they might shoot into the same group at 50yards with that load?

Cute little rifle. Nice work too.
I dropped off a somewhat larger DR with Aaron recently and saw a 44 Mag DR he has in his shop.
Upon return and satisfactory test firing, I will post the results.

Fun with guns!

Funny when cast pills way out shoot the factory stuff, but that should be one fine bunny slaying combination now.

Hello 260rem,
Thanks for the reply.

Not surprising. Factory ammo was designed to shoot from a 2" pistol barrel. Several times during testing, some of the factory ammo resulted in the bullets only making it 21" up the 23-1/2" barrels, and had to be pushed out with a cleaning rod.

It's both, when I was working up a subsonic 22 hornet load I loaded a few internet recipes that claimed 1050-1075fps and didn't make it out of the tube either.
One of the ones that did only went 850fps, I had to go .4gn higher to get a marginally safe load and went .5gn above to be safe.
It doesn't sound like much but with trailboss in that small a case it does fill it up a lot more.

to get an indoor training load( for could winter days) try .25 airgun pellets. the better ones like H&N baracuda, I think they weight around 43 grains.
decades ago I load 25 acp for a guy and, iirc, testloads with the airgun pellet were able to cycle the baby browning.
think I still have a rcbs 25 acp bullet sizer lie around somewhere but there are probably very few who make cast bullets for this caliber.

its an absolute nice little toy gun but what to us it for? very hot load and rabbits

I've loaded a number of toad loads like that, one thing I've leant is use either copper or plated ones.
Otherwise you get pretty bad lead fouling really fast.

Hello 93x64mm
Thanks for the reply.

The 700ne has 150 ft/lbs recoil energy ... compared to 1/10th ft/lbs for the 25acp. after the first shots I actually looked down the barrels to see if the bullets had left. Its a HOOT ! !

Shooting a low recoil rifle at the range in between heavy recoiling sessions is always a surprise. And good practice to avoid flinching.

Hello lancaster,
Thanks for the reply.

Its definitely a change of pace and a welcome break from the big recoiling double I have.

I record every shot on the target. When I don't see a hole appear, I check the bores.
