Bought a rifle today that I've been searching for for awhile
      #303913 - 10/08/17 05:37 AM

At auction today I bought a rifle that I have searched for for awhile. It has 4 things going for it and one against.

1. My favorite BPE caliber a .500BPE #2.
2. It's a Westley.
3. It's hammerless.
4. It sports damascus barrels.

The bad. Looks like it's been restocked. Doesn't look terrible but not great either.

I like the looks of it. I would have the two cracks in the butstock stabilized and shoot the hell out of it. I bet you are thinking moose.

More than likely. Will take the butt off and see what the quality of the inletting is also.

Looks like when whoever put the recoil pad on forgot to drill the old timber first & it split from there.
Would you have to spread the cracks & epoxy as well as dowel from underneath? Otherwise your next option will be a restock & refurbish to bring the old girl back to her full glory.
You still have a marvellous old rifle there Casper, even if she's showing a bit of wear & tear she still looks bloody grand to me!
Don't forget to let us know about the loads also please!
Regards

Well if you have to deal with cracks in the stock, that's the best place for them to be. I like it!

It's the 577-500 #2. The auction company wasn't the most knowledgeable.

Most auction houses aren't but in this case, the names "577-500 No.2" and "500 No.2" can be used interchangeably and mean the same thing.

Cool gun there!
The cracks in the butt can be filled with slivers of wood. They usually end up looking like streaks in the wood grain if selected well.

Rifle arrived yesterday. Here's a few more photos. The last one shows where the ribands were joined when making the barrels.

A BPE in .500 makes a useful BPE.

Even though the wood fit could be better the timber is quite nice.

Well done.

Metford rifling. I slugged the bore today .508. Anyone know of any cast bullets around the 340 grain weight? Can find .510 in 300 grain but can't find anything in 340grain.

Buy lead .500 S&W bullets and Paperpatch them...

Congratulations with your `liebstücken`...:LOL

As mentioned earlier by NitroX..the .500cal express in all it´s forms is a useful caliber even today in 2017.
Lovely hammerless gun with damacusbarrels from WR looks great.

These would need a thin paper patch. The tape I used adds .003" per side.

A single wrap of masking tape might work - worked in my Brother's Sharps and in a model 71 Mauser. final diameter is not critical as pure lead will size easily and will swage up to fill rifling if up to .008" undersize.

350 grain 1-20 lead lubed with SPG.
These work quite well in my J. Burrow .500 3" BPE w/Metford rifling, you could easily size them to .508" but probably would not make any difference so long as the case neck fit is OK.

I tried to check the twist rate but with such shallow grooves with the Metford rifling I can't get it to turn all the way down. Any good ideas on how to check the twist rate?

Took it out for a very quick 2 shots at 50yds. Happy with a 2" group to start with.

Have to reload some different charges and get my shooting bench out there for a solid rest.
going on a 15 day float trip for moose, griz, black bear, caribou and wolf next week so it will have to wait a bit.

I've decided not to take it with me. I've seen too many people flip and lose all their gear and rifles in the river. I'd rather keep it a bit longer than 1 or 2 weeks. Lol

If you do decide to take it and flip a boat, get me the GPS coordinates.

That has "FUN" written all over it.
