All:

Well, today my old man, Doc53, placed his order with Butch for a .577 NE...

As I type this the check is making its way to Butch!

He's flying to LA next week to meet Butch, pick his wood, get a fitting, and decide on some additional options for his gun.

He's also going to decide on some additional engraving.

Now the hard part...waiting a year for it to arrive.

First let me congratulate your father on a fine choice! Butch is a great guy to deal with, and builds a very accurate double rifle! The 577NE is what Butch built for himself.

That comes with the territory! If you think about it, that year will give him time, not only to pay the other half, but to gather supplies for the loading, trimming, and to talk to several others who have this rifle, to find the best loads. Unless he already is set up to load a 577NE then he may have to buy a bigger press, an special trimmer, as the 577NE case is about the same size as a 24 ga shot shell, and the 3" case has an OAL cartridge length of 3.70", and requires a large opening press, and large size dies!

Let us know what he finally decides on for the finished rifle!

Thanks for the info. First, Pop paid the whole price up front and is taking more money out with him when he visits Butch on April 15th to cover the "extras" that he wants.

I want him to see if the articulated front trigger is available--if so, I suggested that he get that.

He's also thinking about getting faux sideplates and having extensive engraving done on it. But that will be decided on when he gets with Butch.

He's also picking out his wood blank when there and we'll post what he decided to go with.

Regarding the reloading, we already spoke about the need to get a bigger press--that's the next step and I'm sure he will welcome anyone's suggestions on what he should look into.

Does anyone happen to know what .577 Butch regulates with? Does he handload and use that?

Regarding his trip, he and I are going to do a cape hunt maybe in 2007...

I'll keep you updated one what he decided on.

You guys are certainly gathering up some formidable double rifles - a .500 NE and now a .577 NE.

I hope some day to have the opportunity to handle and shoot them both.

Well like my Son stated, I placed my order with Butch this afternoon! I'll be like a kid waiting for Christmas to arrive! I guess I'm going through my second childhood already! I thought it would be alot latter in life!

Any info you guys can give me about reloading 577's would be welcomed!

As soon as I get back from seeing Butch, Clark or I will post the final stats on the 577.

Talk to Butch. He'll tell you what load he uses to regulate with. Might as well stick with what the gun maker used

Clark and Doc,

Congradulations on the newest addition to your double rifle familly! A 577 calls for a little jumbo hunting I think!

Diito on what CaptCurl said, wish my dad was into double rifles, but he's a fisherman so that's not too bad

Just let me know if you all need a place to shoot I'm sure I can get you on the IW range in return for letting me caress your double rifles a little

Guys,

We really need to work on scheduling that shoot in VA. I'm not a good organizer, and the discussion on it went dead. If I recall correctly, I last contacted Clark7781 by phone to get some planning done. Basically it didn't happen. I don't think he's a very good planner either, though!

Now time is getting tight. Clark is going to TX in April with DRSS. I'm going to B.C. in May. Dios mio!

It like herding cats. Any suggestions? I still have open dates.

Guys--regarding the shoot this year, I'm sorry I dropped the ball. I had a number of unexpected, highly stressful events happen at work and adjusting my home life with an infant caused me to drop the ball on the shoot. For that, I apologize. I still would like to do it...

Back to the purpose of the original post, I spoke with Butch today and he said that the new articulated trigger comes standard on the .577 NE now. That's good to know!

Right now we are checking on engraving options. Butch said his engraver started in the trade at age 13 at Webley & Scott and eventually worked for Holland & Holland and Purdey.

Does anyone have pictures of engraving on their Searcy? (I've seen the beautiful engraving on the previous thread...)

This is the load for my .577. When I ordered it I loaded up 40 rounds for regulation. I just picked 140 grains as being a nice round number. I chronographed it in another 577 but it did not shoot particularly well in that rifle.

I would suggest you do the same as it will be cheaper than paying for Kynoch or for someone else to load the ammo.
