470 doubles
      #27101 - 02/03/05 09:28 AM

I am considering a 470 Nitro and I am trying to decide between the Merkle and the Krieghoff. I know they are both goog quality rifles but I have no experience in this line of rifles and would appreciate some experienced input. I'm looking at just the basic entry level model in each one since that is all my wallet can afford. Thanks.

They are two different guns entirely... specifically noting the "Cocking System" of the Kreighoff.

Do you like it? Can you get used to it?

Most DR guys don't like the Kreighoff, primarily b/c it's something that they're not used to and feel that they will "Forget to do" in a heated moment when muscle memory takes over. Is it "safer" - I believe your best "safety" is between your ears.

If you don't like it and get ready to sell it, I think you could probably move the Merkel faster - given the comment above, but Hey - it only takes one buyer.

It's your money and your gun... get the one you like best.

And if at all possible - buy used. The Euro will kill you on the purchase of a new one and a used one is likely to have been shot very little (why else would he have sold it) and should be in good shape.

You should have little problem finding a used merkel.

I have a Merkel in .375 and a Chapuis in .470, and I think that both guns are exellent, but the Merkel is just to light in .470 at 9.5 pounds. My .375 weighs in at 10 pounds and the .470 11.5, which helps greatly in taming the recoil!

The fact that the Krieghoff can be carried with live rounds in the chambers but with the mainsprings in a safe uncocked position is a huge benefit IMO.
Now, if only they came with ejectors as an option.

Pajeff, welcome to the forum by the way.

I had a Merkel in 416 Rigby. It shot well, but after about 100 rounds it started becoming hard to open.I am resonably sure it was not a timing issue.
Ive heard a lot more flattering things about the Kreighoffs than I have about the Merkels.Heym and Chapuis are supposed to make good doubles in the same price range.

Jeast,
Welcome also.
As a matter of interest when you say your Merkel became hard to open, do you mean hard to move the top lever or hard to get the barrels to move?

You know its been about two years and I dont quite remember.Iseem to recall it was the top lever, seemed like you had to add pressure to close the action better before the top lever would move.
