My New Verney Carron 600 NE has arrived
      #270035 - 06/09/15 04:29 PM

Hello All,

I thought to also share my excitement here, in this forum.

After collecting and shooting a dozen different Double Rifles from .300 to .577 caliber, I finally decided I needed to experience the World of the 600 Nitro Express. This decision came about as a result of my reading Cal Pappas' great book about the 600 NE.

I searched the market, and came to the conclusion that the only way for me to go was a New Verney Carron Custom Shop XA Azur - with lots of Whistles and Bells added. If you're going to go for it - you might as well get what you want.

And now that it has finally arrived, I knew I made the right decision.

I carefully assembled the rifle and sat with it under the reading lamp. With my magnifying glass in hand, I looked at for well over an hour. I carefully examined all the facinating details. Every time I turned it, I saw things that I had missed on the last pass only mements before.

With the photographs below, I've tried to show its many special features. Unfortunately, photos alone just can't do it justice - you've got to actually hold it in hand to appreciate the beauty of this rifle.

Although one gets excited during the search, I haven't been this excited about a new gun, for nearly 40 years.

My excitement is best described as . . . . . . . . . . its like they say in the commercials, "... If it lasts for more than 4 hours, seek medical attention ..."

I've loaded some ammo, and tomorrow morning I'm off to the range.

Hi Buckstix,

That is one awesome rifle and will serve you well for all of your life. I think your local whitetail's will be a bit nervous when they see you coming. Just joking.

Very fine rifle. How about the balance, looks like a tad barrel-heavy to me.

Hello Igorrock,

thanks for the reply.

This should answer your balance question. Shown with 2 rounds in the chamber; it weighs 14.9 lbs.

Hello Igorrock,

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, all is well. The balance is perfect. Although it is nearly 2 pounds heavier than my Spanish conversion, it actually seems lighter in hand; especially when shooting it offhand.

Your load thus far is about 300fps below factory - do you intend to raise the bar?

I suspect a LOT more recoil when you do.

Hello 500Boswell

Thanks for the reply. Yhe recoil is not objectionable. With the 900g lead bullet at 1615fps it produces 71.2 ft/lbs of recoil. I've shot it 12 - 14 times within 20 minutes and could have shot much more if I had more ammo loaded. On the other hand, some of my other big bores like the 20-577 DR, the 600jdj SS, and the 600 express DR, seem to have more severe recoil even at lower recoil ft/lb levels.

Hello Watson577

Thanks for the reply.

Since you mentioned the photos, I actually thought the Rhino might me some kind of photo-etch process, but its not. Its an actual engraving. I'm sure the engraver also works for the French Mint
to engrave the Government printing plates used for printing paper money. What remarkable detail!

And, as I said in my first post, I spend a lot of time looking at my rifle with a magifying glass to see what new things I might discover.

Well, here's one I just found. The close-up of the Rhino looks very good, but when you look through a magnifying glass you can see where the engraver signed his artwork. Straight right of the Rhino's horn,
at the edge of the engraving, he engraved his name.

Nice rifle, Helmut. It's interesting that V/C saw fit to incorporate a Shelhamer chinstrap behind the pistol grip. I have never before seen that feature on a European gun.

Hello CptCurl,

Thanks for the reply.

You are welcome to stop by anytime, and bring along your 577.

Hello xausa,

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, I really like the chin strap. I think its the stock maker showing off his skill by adding these little extra touches, like the shadow lines around the cheeks and the cheekpiece.

Hello Waidmannsheil,

Thanks for your reply.

One of the features that I really like about this rifle's stock is the "Palm Swell".

This feature goes a long way to reduce recoil. The Swell fills your hand when you grip the rifle, and actually pushes your hand rearward during recoil. This adds the weight of your hand, wrist, forearm, and part of your upper arm, to the weight of the rifle. And ..... this added weight, reduces recoil.

It just goes to show that nothing is new. My friends 1936 Bernhard Merkel doppelbuchse (DR) 9.3X74R/16ga drilling also has this "chin-strap" feature.

Hello All,

Here is an update for those that would like some "reduced" loads for the 600 NE.

Up until now I've fired my reduced loads at 50 yds. Today I tested them at 100 yds.

I'm pretty pleased with the results. I'm ready for Wisconsin hunting this Fall.

I only have about 50 of these "early" Barnes bullets left. The kind that were made with copper tubing. I do have some 900g Woodleighs, but they haven't done as well - yet. I'll keep testing.

Also, my 900g cast bullets grouped 5-3/8" at 100 yds, also quite acceptable.

Greetings. I just started a post requesting any comments regarding VC's 577 that's in consideration. I believe VC makes the finest Big big Bores, 577/600 Imperial's or Round Body's for the money.

Is your 600 still holding it's own over time?
Many Thanks. Regards, Dan.
