I test loaded two cartridges before I left the house this morning with bullets resized to 0.427 and they both came off correct without loose bullet tension. I did note that as described in earlier posts the expanding button if allowed to oversize the case mouth does have an impact.

I intend to shoot it with the jacketed 0.427 bullets to see how they do before I move up to anything larger.

I need to cancel my order for 0.423 258 bullets from Hawks as they will not be of much use.

Once I have nailed down the best regulating load with the Hornaday XTP 240 grain, I may go ahead and see how it does with the Hornaday FTX 265 Grain at 1800 FPS

It will be two weeks before I will be able to get to a range again to fire my next lot of reloads

A 265gr. Hornady at 1,800fps was a friend's .444 Marlin load for over 20 years on moose. It never failed to floor a moose at from 25 yards to 200. He 'graduated' to a .35 Whelen which worked just about as well, but through to today, he still remarks on how that "triple 4" dropped his moose.

I always thought the 444 Marlin was travelling much faster than 1800 FPS (up around 2300 FPS)?

I imagine it could always be loaded down a little to make it more comfortable.

I hate to admit this but the only moose I ever took during my four years in Fairbanks AK I used a 300 Savage at 75 yards and it worked well.

He loaded it to barely over 1,800fps. It can do 2,300fps with that bullet and 2,200fps with 300's.

Moose are easy to kill if you shoot them through both lungs. They have a huge X ring - yet so many people screw it up.

Based on the cartridge volume available for powder (74grns) the most N135 powder I can squeeze into with the 265grn FTX is about 46 grains which according to quickload may yield about 1890 FPS. Before I go to that point I will start much slower and work up.

Further before I start playing with 265 FTX I need to complete working out the best load for the 240grain bullet to include testing out some other powders than just the N135 I am currently working with.
