Went shooting my .577 BPE today. Yee Haw!

4 rounds was enough. Got all the old men out there excited to see a true big-bore double in action.

I wanted to get some trigger time in the standing position - as it's the only way to properly shoot one I've come to observe.

Accurace is highly dependent on your stance and controlling recoil. To much recoil and your 8 inches high, not enough and you are 8 inches low.

Also if your muzzle is low, level or high can really throw you off.

30 - 40 yards and holding level or slight low (like shooting a tiger from your elephant) is ideal.

50+ yards begins to push the limits unless you have an exceptionally fine rifle.

I'd like to see the muzzles and front sight of that rifle.
Can you post a couple photos of the business end of this rifle please?

Good you had some fun out at the range.
What was your load today?
Were you shooting paper patched bullets?

A little while ago, my friend and I took his Leach (or Leech) .577 2.75" BPE to the range for some load development.

Used the woodleigh 650gr (?) projie and started at 90gr AR 2208 up to about 105 or so. At the neat 100gr it shot best.

Shots were taken kneeling at the bench, so a good rest was had but still allowed the rifle to torque and recoil.

Over the morning a total of 28 shots were taken and I must say it beat the absolute crap out of me. I had to try and catch the fore end on the way down after each shot. I simply could not hang onto it.

Then a couple were fired in the standing offhand. Strange as this sounds, they were almost pleasant. At least in comparison to the kneeling shots.

A friend of ours came up to the range in his lunch hour, and I convinced him to have a shot. Looks quite funny shooting a double in his accounting attire.



And yes, that is a cissy pad on the gun, as the steel buttplate was not that comfortable. Also the bloody rear sight kept on laying down. Need to fix that.

I was going to say, kneeling, that must have hurt. There is no substitute for standing up or a standing rest. Even shooting off the bonnet of a Landcruiser, still hurts a lot more.

28 shots between two of you? Ouch, a second time.

Ashamed to admit, when Marrakai and I shot his .577 ( and three other doubles) in Darwin a few years ago, yep, the "pattern" on the target was not impressive. All on the pistol target but looked a bit like a pattern. The photo is somewhere on NE. Then Marrakai photoshopped it for a better memory.

Actually shooting one of these guns, in bold blood on paper, kinda makes Greener's 8 bore 'pattern' look 1/2 ways decent, doesn't it.



Almost looks like my little 14 bore has similar recoil. I was aiming quite level when the rifle went off. I was only shooting 6 drams (164gr.BP) with 480gr. ball. Rifle weighs a mere 9 1/2 pounds. This gun doesn't hurt me due to the slightly 'slower' recoil - although I fear much more powder would. I've shot 875gr. slugs with 140gr. powder when a kid (1986 ) didn't like that at all.
Here's 140gr.2F with the light 480gr. round ball. My watch does spin around a bit on recoil.


I'd surely like to shoot a .577 2 3/4" some day - at least one shot.

Bonanza - the right hand rifle,.577 I assume - what ranges for the leaves and what is the staff regulated for in ranges? I'm merely curious.

The barrels on that .577 are quite stout!
What is your regulation load with that rifle?
The chamber walls are mondo thick.
Lots of meat at the muzzles too.


The rib extension seems to be a different piece of material from the rib.
Interesting.
Can we see more detail of the rear sight group and rib too?
Neat rifle.

Cool dovetail bushed striker detail on the smallbore rifle too...

Are they? I don't have anything to compare them to.

72 grain IMR 4198 with 560 grain soft.

I'll get some more pictures.
