Tikka 512SD

Tikka 512SD with U/O 9.3x74R barrels and a set of 12 gauge barrels with exchangeable chokes.

Nightforce scope 1-4 1/2 x illuminated scope.

A 1x scope is great for quick shooting in brush or at close range with both eyes open.

Nice rifle, John.

I've mentioned before that I had a Valmet 512 with three sets of barrels: 12/12, 12/.222, and .30-06/.30-06. I used it a lot and had a great deal of satisfaction from it.

I swapped out the single trigger for a double trigger assembly and was quite happy with that.

I've got three other barrel sets as mentioned before on the forums. Still need some final fitting.

12g/.223
12g/7x65R
.30-06/.30-06

I'm thinking the .30-06 might be able to be converted to .30 Super Rimmed. Just for fun.

I also acquired a twin trigger set, but also need to have it fitted.

I want to get a Trijicon RMR sight and get it fitted to one of the Valmet bridge mounts, so it can be put on and removed as one wants. Might work well with the 7x65R barrel and shotgun.

How is your Trijicon RMR sight going?

I do not understand why Marocchi limits the rifle chamberings of this gun to the 9.3x74R.
Express calibers up to and including the .500 NE could be safely chambered in this gun, I suppose.
I have one in 12ga with 3.5" chambers and am quite satisfied with it.

Same action as on my trap gun, a Savage 333T - back in the 1970's- made by Valmet. Valmet's combo guns were out then as well. Always wanted one - seemed a terrific action & excellent top lockup idea.

John - what is the manner of it's regulation of the 2 rifle barrels - do the barrels converge into a single group, or do they remain parallel, or does the bottom barrel rise to meet the top barrel, but not quite until extended range?

I'd think with some forethought, one might develope ammo that would give long range shooting from one barrel, say an automatic 350 yard zero, while normal shootin, as say a 100 to 200 yard zero from the other.

The barrels are self-regulating. If you look at the photos of the game shot you will see the gap between the barrels.

In the photos of the rifle, there is no gap. I have since inserted the rubber (or whatever it is made of) "ribs" between the barrels. This improves the appearance of the rifles and combinations.

The regulation is self-regulated, with a wedge half way along the barrels which either increases the gap or decreases it. Increasing the gap brings the barrels impact points together and vice versa. Along wedge at the muzzles for horizontal movement. I have never had to touch that one.

For my current load, last time I checked it was shooting about an inch parallel at 100 metres with two one hole groups of two shots.

Yes if the calibre and load allows, there is no reason why one barrel (the top perhaps) or both barrels can not shoot at decent ranges.

Depending on the load and calibre. The 9.3x74R is no "magnum" especially the load I am using which is a 286 gr Woodleigh Protected Point at 2,170 fps in the 9.3mm. I could try a faster load but that was superbly accurate in my rifle.

Maybe the .30-06 barrels when fitted will show what they are capable of. As the barrels can be self-regulated, I can try lighter bullets in it, not the usual heavy round nose bullets usually used in DRs.

For the guys that think double rifles are out of the ordinary guys financial reach.

The 9.3 barrel set and shotgun barrel set, cost me US$1600 in Texas. With paperwork, export, freight, and import, less than A$2000 to A$2500.

A second hand Valmet/Tikka style shotgun is maybe $1100 or less. A combination rifle I have seen for $1500 which looked too much to me. New barrels or second hand barrels are often priced between $500 and $900.

So a double rifle, shotgun, or combination firearm, which is definitely not out of the reach of the ordinary guy.

The Valmet 412, 512 is NOT the same action as the old Valmet made Savages! The 412/512 is beefed up quite a bit from the old guns, and the bbls won't even come close to interchangeing with the old Savage/Valmet guns! They are completely different.

All of these models can be easily regulated by the owner, for any decent hunting load you would ever want to use.

I have several of these guns with over 25 different bbls, some in custom chamberings... All of them shoot very well, and i've taken much big game with them.

What is the largest calibre you have or seen made well for them?

The largest I believe I have heard of, is a .375/444 or something like that.

Thanks.

Largest cartridge, OR largest caliber? I'm always confused when someone ask me that question, because many seem to refer to "calibers" when they mean cartridges.

I designed a line of "rimmed" cartridges, then having them chambered in the Valmets 412's as "custom guns/bbls.,

left to right: .416, .375, .338 and the 30-06 for comparison

I built two 416's as "experimentals" one had problems and i never built another. I did build quite a few 375's in combo's and DR's, and they worked out very well. I also built a couple 338's and still have one around here in a combo...

There were others, but those are the most powerful...

The cartridge i liked best, is the "improved" chambering i came up with for the 9.3x74R. You can see it compared to the factory 9.3x74R in this pict.,

You can fire factory loads in the chamber, then reload the "improved brass" for a bit more power, as after fireforming it to the larger chamber, the case will then hold a bit more powder.

I did all of this for my own purpose, long ago, and do NO work for anyone else, or even play with these cartridges any longer. I've moved on to different things, but i still enjoy shooting them...

Based on what rimmed cartridge? All the x74R?

Ballistically how did the improved 9.3x74R compare to the original?

John, the photos of you with the game are great.

Just one question ...Why did you lay the rifle upside the animal, and don't you think you should see an orthodontist about those teeth of yours?

The top 3 cartridges are based on the 45 basic case, so they have more capacity than a 9.3x74R case.

The 9.3x74R imp. gains velocity through higher case capacity once it's improved, what you gain depends on how much heavier you want to load it.

I had one of the Valmet 412s a few years ago with a set of 375 Winchester barrels. The barrels had a 1 in 12 twist. I re-chambered them to 375JDJ (444/375) regulated it and soft soldered it so it wouldn't change. The rifle was a real shooter and played hell on the New Mexico mule deer population! I wish I still had that rifle.

I like the look of those improved x74's.

John,do you like the NF scope ?.
If you had your time again would you buy another ?.

I see you had a Leupold 1-4 or 1.5-5 on it in the NT.

Someone asked me that in another thread. I haven't developed an opinion yet as I haven't used it for long enough yet.

These 30 mm scopes are too heavy IMO for a nice lightly balanced double, but on a 'Valmet' that doesn't matter. But the Zeiss. S&B and Swarovski scopes one sees on most DRs are all the same, 30 mm and heavy. Especially illuminated ones. The Nightforce is probably not as heavy as many of them. I really wish GOOD scopes in 2 1/2x, 3x and 4x were available again, especially for DRs and big bore bolts. One does not need a large variable.

I prefer a different sort of reticle to those available, but on a double for closer range shooting it should work well. I do like the 1x scope setting. Allows both eyes to be open for very quick target acquisition. Also if used on one of the combination barrels might be fine to use with a shotgun.

Given the above, I would consider another without doubt, but really would prefer a German no. 4 type reticle perhaps with the lighted circle and a dot.

They say a true 1x is really hard to get and that is why most scopes are 1.1 and 1.5x at their lowest setting.
I have one 30mm tube scope Khales 1.1-4)and while it is beautiful to look through it is very heavy and does change the point of balance on my 404j.

I too like the German 4. I have four scopes with this reticle.
