New stock for a Chapuis DR?
      #178531 - 08/04/11 05:51 AM

I got a Chapuis Ugex 9,3x74R and have been thinking about getting a new stock, as I would like a little more lenght of pull without needing to fit a very thick recoil pad. Further I would like to have a stock with a cheekpiece, as mine dont. The other measurements of my current stock is allright though...

Would you guys recomend buying one form Chapuis or just get a custom stock made from scratch by a competent gunsmith? If ordering from Chapuis I recon I would need a gunsmith to fit it anyway, as sending them my rifle probably would cost more than the rifle is worth:-)

What do you think would be the cost if I decided to order from Chapuis? Anyone done that before?

As for the forend I actually like it very much, but it would perhaps be difficult to find a buttstock that looks alike...

Hi THS,

I owned a Chapuis and one of Australia's best stock makers, Ross Waghorn said to me that due to some concerns he would not restock it although he does a lot of English and others Double Rifles. So I think that going "Direct" to Chapuis would be my suggestion.

Cheers,

Jeff Gray

Jesus

If Ross said that, I agree, send it back to the factory.

He does the most intricate work around so for him to not restock it is interesting.

Ouch:/

That would probably be the most expensive and time consuming option as well.

Or pass this one on to someone who fits it better and get a fresh one for yourself.

There are other expensive options, depending on the stock maker. My H&H No. 2 made in 1906 was acquired from Jim Bell, who brought it back from India, where he had been in the Peace Corps. He had a new butt stock made for left hand shooting by Al Biesen. Al of course is legendary and while still alive, I understand that his son is doing the work now. It might be worth getting an estimate.

I also got Jim's dies and a bunch of his B.E.L.L. brass.

I decided to send my rifle to a competent stockmaker and gunsmith and just got it back with a a made to measure stock - fits perfectly and no problems with the regulation!

Thanks for translating that link Mike. The translation was not the best but as they say a picture is worth a thousand words and it looks great. I am sure the owner will be happy with it for years to come.

As posted last year, I really like this rifle, and thus I have used it for almost all my hunting this season. After much use, I decided it perhaps would be even bether with a more sleek forend. Not a problem for my gunsmith and here´s the result

This did not alter the nice regulation of this rifle and it actually feels bether balanced as well.

Now there´s not much more to do with it besides hunt, shoot and be happy

Including the walnut blank the cost was ca 50% of what you would expect to pay for a new plain Chapuis Ugex 9.3x74r here in Norway. The walnut was about 20% of the total price.
