triggger pull weight

Friends,

After many years of me talking him about doubles, my good friend bought a VERNEY CARRON MODELO AZUR SAFARI LUX EM CALIBRE .500 NE.

However, he is appaled with the pull weight on the triggers. He wants to adjust the triggers, reducing both some of the weight as well as the travel lenght.

I myself first bought a Chapuis 9.3mm and a Chapuis .470 and was very surprised at the triggers (too heavy as my shotguns have very sweet triggers).

Question is - how much is too short a travel and too light a weight on a .500 or .470????

All my hunting doubles are set 3-3.5 on the front and 4-4.5 on the rear trigger.

In theory, I should set some of the smaller calibres to lighter but I like the consitency.

I like my heavy rifles to have a bit more weight on the trigger pull compared to my lighter rifles. Around 4.5 to 5lbs.

I try NOT to stuff around too much with DR's. Trigger weight is one thing that can be changed - BY A COMPETENT GUNSMITH - but I tend to leave other things alone.

500 I completely agree with you. We have only a couple extremely competent gunsmith here in our country. However they can do anything I have seen in the US, and many times I have seen them do it better. Unfortunately we probably have 100 lousy ones...
Our problem is they have not as much experience with doubles and less with big bore doubles.They are shotgun and bolt action rifle masters.

So the problem is knowing what to ask them to do. If you say the triggers need longer travel and 3lbs or 4lbs, we can do exactly it. The problem is knowing what is right.

If 5-6 lbs is right, then we will leave the triggers alone...exactly as you suggest...

5 - 6lbs is bloody heavy for a trigger pull IMHO.

Some even say 3.5 is heavy but since I carry my gun around loaded and if following up safety off, I like that little bit of extra insurance.

I also started with 3.5 so decided to have them all the same.

I do not like free travel in ANY trigger.
In my doubles I have the front triggers set at 3 pounds and the rear trigger at 4 pounds. If the rear trigger is set too light, the rifle may "double", and the heavier the recoil the easier to happen...and the greater the "surprise"!
