Scope for 9,3x74R double

having just picked up a double rifle in 9,3x74R, I'm thinking to increase the versatility of it, I should match some shooting glass to it for ranges out beyond the iron sights, lets say 200 yards. Just thinking out loud. I have not been to Africa for big game hunting but I am going in May 2011 for plains game in south africa. What are your thoughts on shooting glass, your recommendations, and what type of reticle. I was looking at a schmidt and bender zenith 1.1x4x with a #9 reticle. I have Recknagle tipoff mounts. thought on these?

I have used several 9.3x74r doubles for hunting, both sxs and o/u, using iron sights and scopes, and have done same with numerous other calibers. The 9.3x74r is a wonderful caliber, the best early day caliber to be developed by the Germans, in my opinion; easy to understand why it is so well liked and popular in Europe. For double rifles of all kinds, sxs or o/u, I personally prefer to keep scope as small in size/weight, as possible, to conform to slim trim 9.3x74r rifle, so I don't like variable scopes. A single power, 3 or 4 power, scope works just fine, for most instances, for realistic field conditions, while variable power scopes are a waste of time and money; only needed, perhaps for varmint long range shooting.

I agree in principle with your comments about variable power scopes. The exception, in my opinion, is the low powered (1.5-5X) family of variable powered scopes, which, because they have straight tubes, can be mounted low enough so that stocks made for shooting with iron sights can also be used with them. Large objectives have no place on a rifle made for instinctive shooting, which is what a double rifle is best suited for.

Any of the lower powered scopes are fine.

The one you mentioned I am sure is good.

The 1.5-5 Leupy is the standard that others are judged by
for the reasons xausa mentioned.

I have one on my 9.3 double.

Single powers are OK if that's your preference.

Does the fitting of a scope affect the regulation of a double rifle regulated for open sights?

Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. I have rifles that go both ways.

I don't know the answer as one 9.3x74 has a Zeiss 1.75x6x42 rail mount {a heavy steel scope} on it and shoots the same group with it or without it.

On 8x57 with a 2x Lyman Alaskan shoots about 6" wide with the R barrel 3" high with the scope and inside 2" with the iron sights.

My 450/400 3 1/4 with a Leopold 1.5x5 shoots almost the same.

Go figure.

I've got a doublerifledrilling in 9,3x74R

I used to have a Leupold 1,5-5x20 in a ERA pivot mount. I bought it because it looked pretty neat, but I did not like the scope...:

It gave me to little magnification with too little field of view. Although it is a very sturdy scope and beeing the reference for years I find that you have several better choices today.

I traded mine for a Zeiss Victroy 3-9x42mm 1" It doesn't look that bad, and it offers a quite good field of view compared to the magnification. It also enables me to to hunt in the twilight, and go for a distant shot if wanted.

If my funds hadn't been limited, I would've bought a Swarovski Z6 1,7-10x42. It has anything you want in a riflescope.

If however you do not want to pay a preimium for a riflescope, the european 1,5-6x42 or 2,5-10x42 would be good choices.

You'll also se that some of those scopes offer a whole lot more field of view than the little 1,5-5x...

This is my FN-Browning o/u in 9,3x74R. It's topped off with a Swarovski 1,5-4x24 in Sühler claw mounts. I only use this rifle for drive hunting were it is very deadly on running shots.

The bbls. had to be re-regulated after scope mounting.
