Question regarding barrel stamp
      #129775 - 17/03/09 04:03 AM

NE,

Has anyone seen this stamp, two squares with the letter “K” inside each, before? If so, what have you seen it stamped on?

I’ve been digging around a bunch and I haven’t been able to find out what kind of stamp it is (proof, inspector, or other) or who it represents (gun manufacturer, barrel maker, or other). It doesn’t look like any proof mark I’ve seen listed so I’m tempted to rule that out.
The only tie to a manufacturer that I have seen is on a Greifelt “clamshell” receiver double rifle. I have it stamped on one of my clamshell double rifles as well but that isn’t helping anything because it doesn’t have a manufacturers name on it. My guess is it looks like a barrel makers stamp but I’d like to know if it is particular to Greifelt guns, clamshell receiver guns, or perhaps just to a particular barrel manufacturer. As there were so many of each (gun manufacturers and barrel manufacturers) operating in Europe prior to WWII researching these things can drive one bats.

I would certainly appreciate any information that you could share with me.

Regards,

Marcus

I have a mauser sporter and 12 gauge sxs with the same stamp. I have seen the stamp on half a dozen other guns and believe it is stamp for krupp barrels, although I don't have any direct evidence. All of the guns I have seen with this Krupp stamp are pre-WWI and probably pre-1912. Some of the German afficiados on doublegunshop.com might have a few more details.

HBO1,

Thank you very much. Every lead is much appreciated.

Curious, do you have the names of the distributors of both of your guns and in the case of your 12 guage SXS the manufacturer's names as well?

It probably doesn't have anything to do with your gun, but in the book "Gunmarks" by David Byron it shows that stamp as a Russian quality control mark. Looks just like it. I wonder if there is any chance it was exported to Russia?

NorthernBob,

Thank you for the reply. The subject stamp is sure a puzzlement and your observation of it looking like a Russian quality control mark really mixes it up. I need to get off my tail and send a picture of the mark (highlighted with a white lacquer stick) off to the German Gun Collectors Association so they can list it in their "History Detectives" section of their journal "Der Waffenschmied", perhaps getting the attention of someone with some definitive info. If such a thing happens I will post whatever the conclusion is for those who are interested.

Thanks again,

Go to www.bobjonesguns.com he deals only in German, and austrian guns. Give him a call or e-mail him that picture and ask about the mark.

I'm sure the K is for Krupp, and the letters STAHL is german for steel the "R JPP" preceding the word STAHL IMO, are the type of steel the barrel was made form. Most barrels made by Krupp in my experience were labled "Krupp-LuftStahl" Which translates to Krupp fluid steel.
