Photos last Friday the 13th in the bush with my double
      #127508 - 19/02/09 01:53 PM

Spent last weekend in the bush with my great tracker & friend Domingos chasing buff.

Jaguar tracks everywhere. 10 to 20 miles a day in the tracks of some nice buff.

Took my 9.3mm Chapuis, a joy of a gun to walk miles and miles. But when we were in the tick bush I vowed to bring my .470 next time.

Got a nice and really plump bull after a difficult hunt in tick spot.

Notice my backup (a 28 gauge with buckshot). Domingos shot a huge bull a few months ago, it only took 17 shots...

Always love the DDouble posts!

Nice job.

Obviously hot!

Nice job.

Really interesting head shape and horn shape. Where did those buff originally come from? Are they indigenous? Is there a large population of them?

Yeah and maybe another barrel on it, love the triggerguard also.

Nice post, is the hunt done in private land?

Excellent!

17 shots whew.......lucky you with the 470! have you considered a shotgun conversion as I have???

Great way to go for a big big bore......unless one has 100,000$ spare for a rifle which I dont. I am thinking that a 577 is the way to go......as I do so love the 577 bpe and the 600 is too tricky to make.

Thanks. Let me try to answer the questions:

This buff population was formed over 40 years ago when buffalo from the "murrah" breed (fom india) were released and fled themselves in the marshes. These buff are big and really mean when hit. After they are hit they donīt care about saving themselves, they just want to kill you!!

In Brazil we also have the "carabao" breed (similar to the Australian buffalo) in feral populations both in the norther and western part of the Amazon.

The other breed is the "jaffarabadi" which is also found in some wild/feral populations, but are mostly tamed.

These buffalo now roam a 100kms radius, south of the amazon river in the Mato Grosso. The area is all private, with ranches from 10.000 to 150.000ha (1ha=2.2 acres). The new laws requires that only 50% can be deforestated, and the ranchers leave the marshes untouched which is great for the buff.

The ranch I was hunting has 20.000ha of soybeans and 30.000ha of forests and bogs, where we suspect there are around 200 heads.

The temperature was around 35, which is cool compared to my last time there!!!

please take the time and make your friend some bullet cartridges for his dschungel gun. I dont now which brand this single shot is and how strong they are, believe CBC has made such guns.
Magtech 28 ga brass filled with elephant black powder and a patched hardened lead round ball may help to bring the buffalo down with 4-5 shots.
I suspect that you dont see a jaguar regularly in dayligth. do they kill water buffalos?

Very interesting. Would like to get a "cork screw" horned water buffalo trophy for my "wild bovine" collection one day.

Marvellous stuff!

Love that high shoulder-shot, it is my favourite with .40-cal plus on our local Asian buffalo.

Was that shot high enough to catch the spine and drop him on the spot? It obviously did the business!

Marrakai,

Actually that was my 3rd shot!! There were two bulls and I shot first through the lower shoulder (can be seen, and it was a bit too high for the heart) and he ran.

I followed and it turned to face me, when I put a solid on the point of his shoulder into the vitals (his front went down but incredibly the bullet did not break bone). He ran 40 yards and collapsed.

Well, I then ran to where the other bull had disappeared (500 yards away into some thick bush) and started to track through VERY, VERY nasty stuff. Nothing to climb, no visibility, small thorn trees and palms mixed with burnt logs!!! Black logs everywhere!! A charge would mean 5 to 10 yards and maybe one shot... after 20 minutes of tracking some common sense took a hold of me and I chickened out of there and returned to find this fellow.

I could not find it right away and then suddenly he started to rise. It was just then that I shot him high on the shoulder. He went down for good.

We had a hell of a time to take the meat out as it started to rain hard...

Marrakai,

Next week I am traveling around the globe to your part of the work. I have a conference in New Zealand and was able to plan a 3 day bowhunt for deer and pigs on the weekend. Wished I had the time to track some Australian buff...

Great stuff D.

I also like the scabbarded machete! I make bolo, parang and heavy field knives and had a collection of near 80 machetes, now thinned down a bit.

VERY interesting horns and yes, Daryl, ditto...that critter is fat. The heck with corn feeding, DDouble's swamp puts the flesh on them just fine!!

DDouble,
What are the requirements (licenses etc) for hunting feral buffalo in Brasil? Are there outfitters that specialize in buffalo hunts?

Great stuff indeed ! Are these the buffalos that P.H.Capstick mentions in his book "Death in a Lonely Land" ? He calls them "red water buffalo" and describes them, of course, as extremely agressive and deadly. As usual with Capstick`s writing, one doesn`t know if it is true but for sure is very entertaining reading.

That could be one of the best gun slings I have seen in some time.

FAT - those buff come out of the marshes at night and raid the soybeans. That is why the ranchers like us there.

MACHETE - nothing is as good as a machete in a place like the amazon...

"RED WATER BUFFALO" - the buffalo Capstick mentioned are also called the "rosilhos" and they are very similar to the Australian buffalo. Those are of the Carabao breed, with those beautifull long horns. Fred Bear bowhunted them in the Marajo island, the same place Capstick wrote about.

Licenses - hunting in Brazil was totally outlowed many years ago except for birds and just in one state of the country. Subsistance hunting is allowed. Buffalo on the other hand are considered exotic animals and they can be hunted due to the damage they do to the soybeans. Some anti-hunters in Brazil now want to pass a new law where a feral buff would be considered a native species and hunting would be prohibited! Feral boars are another species that can be hunted, although even then there are many states where they cannot be hunted with a firearm, only with traps. Brazil has one of the most severe gun laws in the world. I would bore you and fill pages to begin to explain the restrictions. It took me 8 months to get the necessary Army licenses to own a .470.

Wow - and I thought it was bad here for firearms laws - it is, but not that bad. England is quite restrictive now as well. At least I can own and shoot my handguns.
