450-400 NE 3" loads for 300gr. Barnes TSX
      #112598 - 26/08/08 03:35 PM

I recently received and already love a new Searcy PH DR in 450-400 NE 3". I've already shot Hornady loads with 400 grain bullets and I'm preparing for reloading using 400 grain bullets, but I live in California and have a problem. {And beware, even though folks say "out in California", what happens here tends to spread across the country and we all may have this problem in the future.) In the Calif. condor range, where the pig hunting is, bullets must contain no lead. So, the only bullets I can find and use here that contain no lead are Barnes: the 400 grain banded solid, and a 300 grain TSX. 400 grain bullets are best for my DR, but that Barnes solid won't expand much, and I'd like something that expands and use it as my first shot. DOES ANYONE HAVE A SOURCE, BESIDE BARNES, OF 400 GRAIN, .410 OR .411" DIAMETER EXPANDING BULLET WITH NO COPPER, OR, ALTERNATELY, A LOAD FOR THIS CALIBER THAT WILL WORK WITH A 300 GRAIN TSX BULLET? (and was regulation a problem with the lighter bullet?)
Thanks for any info you can forward to me.

Perhaps depleted uranium in an aluminum jacket would fix the bastards.

Could you cast your own from bismuth shot?

I believe that one of the Euro companies like Lapua or RWS make a "non-toxic" slug called a "Naturalis" or some such thing. Check with Huntington's. They carry a lot of oddball slugs. Good luck. Your troubles are a glimpse into the rest of the countries future.....I'm afraid.

for the 300 grian Barnes, use the same powder charge as the 400 grain regulation load. the old 75 % rule.

So, use a different rifle when you have to hunt there.

Thanks everyone for the information. I'm unfamiliar with the 75% rule, so I'll more into that.

Brooks

Degoins is refering to my 75% rule.
I cannot take credit for "inventing "it, but i do take credit for "rediscovering" it.

Here is the "75% Rule".

Develop the load for you double in the normal way using the standard full weight bullet, in your case of the 450/400, 400 grains.

Then take a bullet that is 75% the weight of the original bullet, again in your case, 300 grains.

Shoot it with the same powder charge. You might have to tweek it a few grains up or down, but you should be able to fine a load with the 300gr bullet, that hits to the sights and regulates well.

Velocity should be around 2250 to 2350fps depending on what powder charge your gun likes with the 400gr bullets.

This 75% Rule has worked on several 450/400's both the 3" and the 3 1/4", 450 Nitro and 450 No2's, 470's etc. The bullet does not have to be EXACTLY 75% but the closer the better.

I have a 450/400 3 1/4" double. The 75% Rule works for mme with 300gr. Hawk bullets and with 300 gr Barnes X bullets. My double used bullets of .408 diameter.

I have killed a pig with a 400gr Barnes X, and a 300gr Barnes X, both with excellent results. Neither pig took a step.

See if Barnes will make you some 300gr X bullets in the diameter suitable for your rifle.

When not in the Condor Zone, and for testing the 75% Rule in your double, see if Hornadays 405 Winchester 300gr bullets are the correct diameter for your double.

If not just use the 400gr X bullets.

Thanks NE450No2 for the information on the 75% rule. It's good to know someone has actually used this rule and in a caliber almost identical to mine. I'll give it a try, then post the results.

The 75% rule has worked in several 3" 400's.

In my double it works with IMR 4831 and RL 15.

These 300gr loads work great on deer and wild pigs.

Keep us posted.

My starting load for my new 450-400 NE 3" is 76.4 grains of IMR 4831 and a 400 grain Woodleigh bullet. I have yet to order the 300 grain Barnes TSX bullets, but will do so soon. When I receive them, I'll give that load a try and post the results.
Again, thanks for the information.

the 75% rule has worked for me with Hornady .411 300 grain bullets in my Searcy 450/400 on paper. i will be testing it on deer very soon. i've had good results on deer and pigs with Hornady 210 grain .41 mag slugs and 49 grains of AA5744 (no filler required or used) in my Searcy. 5744 burns dirty though.

Thanks degoins, for the information. Butch Searcy also told me about the AA5744, and I've purchased the propellant and I will try it with a load he recommended for the 400 grain bullet. I'm also glad to hear that you've tried the .411 diameter bullet with good results. Butch mentioned that it's all right to use .411, but further confirmation is great. Thanks.
