Most popular calibre?
      #106220 - 28/05/08 02:41 PM

Hello again Gentlemen,

First of all, we were thrilled to meet those of you at the Shot Expo who made it there.

Just wondering- if you could only have one DR, what calibre would it be in? Is there an all-rounder?

Thanks,
Laura

I would probably go for .375 Flanged or .450/.400-3"

Same here. With an edge to the 375 Flanged for all around use.

Ether the 450/4003" or a 450 3/4.
My favorite Double rifle calibers smallest to biggest are 9.3x74, 450/400, 450NE &470NE.

While I have never owned a DR, I always wanted to own a 450/400 NE.

If I wanted one as an all-rounder, a .450/400 3".

For medium game the 9.3x74R is hard beat.

Good to meet you Laura and Alex at the SHOT Show.

450/400 and 9.3?

Would not you want 5000 lbs out of your only DR?

The 450NE ranges from 3000 lbs with a 350 RN to 5000 lbs with a 480 solid. Not to mention the huge variety of .458 projectiles.

This rifle can be made right at 10 pounds and still be tolerable to shoot.

Unless Elephant is on your menu you don't need 5000 ft/lbs. I would much rather have a 7 pound rifle for animals I hunt all the time.

Of course, one of each would be okay also.

+1

I'd be delighted with a 7x57R. Such a rifle would be perfect for the deer, bear and elk I routinely chase around.

I have used a 450 No2, a 450/400 3 1/4", and a 9,3x74R for hunting in Texas, Montana, Canada, Idaho, and 3 Safaris to Zimbabwe. I have taken small game, big game, and cape buff and elephant with all three.

In todays world, the best choice, if you could have only one, would be a scoped 450/400 3".

The 3" is prefered over the 3 1/4" because Hornady is loading factory ammo for it.

From my experience with my 3 1/4" [I have taken skunks, armadillos, deer and wild pigs with 300gr bullets, wild pigs, caribou, black bear, baboon, warthog, zebra, cape buff, lion, and bull elephant with 400gr bullets], the 450/400 has the best combination of power, recoil, gun weight, plus the ability of being scoped, that puts it ahead of lessor and bigger doubles.

My 450 No2 is my favorite "gun" of all time.
I have found the 9,3x74R double to be one of the best hunting rifles on the Planet.

But the 450/400 is IMHO, the best double rifle for the modern sport hunter.

Wow! Thanks for the opinions.

Seems to be that a 450/400 is definitely coming up again and again.

If one were to look at factory production of this calibre in Australia, what would be the price that one would be willing to pay?

Hi Alex & Laura,

I'd imagine most people would only ever have one double in which case it would have to fulfill its thoroughbred role as 'stopper'. Therefore, nothing smaller than .45 calibre for me. So, to make it more versatile, .45 calibre affords a huge array of bullets from which to pick for light(er) game. A .500/450 or the .450 No2 would do it nicely. The same would apply for the .500NE with lots of lighter projectiles available.

Great to meet you guys.

Bighammer

You might pick up a few Victorian sambar hunters with the 450/.400. Some use 458s now but the .400 would be great without looking overgunned and could be made lighter than the .450s for the carrying in the hills.

My first one would be a 450 / 400 if I can afford it. The most likely one could be a 470 Manton as it is sitting under the bed of my dad's friend & waiting for me!!! If I ever get a third one, it would be a 360NE or a 9.3 or 375 Flanged NE.

If I owned a double rifle manufacturing business, I would focus on these four (excluding the 360, as that is just my personal prejudice & not really popular now) plus a common 450 & a common 500.

I can dream can't I!

Hi Lapua,
Still haven't got your double yet?? Gees mate, your suppose to be heading North very shortly. If you feel that there is some form of collusion or illegality taking place, speak to the Detectives and or Licencing in your area as considering that you have parted with cold cash and you know Customs have passed it there may well be a breach or breaches in one of either the Crimes Act or Firearms Act. Good Luck.
