Hornady bullets for large game
      #100993 - 31/03/08 08:10 PM

With the new DSX and DSG bullets that Hornady has for the larger calibers, how well do they work on large game, esp. buffalo? Any first hand knowledge on the 450-400 ammo performance in particular. I have a searcy in that caliber and it is super accurate with the new hornady. I have yet to try loads with woodleighs, which I have the upmost trust in, but would use the hornady if they would do the job. I just do not have experience with the new hornady bullet.Help!

Since they are so new, perhaps only company testing has been done. They looks as good as most other 'premium' bullets, so I suspect they'll turn out just super.
: I suggest you plunk a buffalo with one and let us now when you return.

My mate pulled this Hornady 'Interbond' out of a big Northern Territory buff last year, spanked it with his .458 Lott. Does this count?

OK, that is impressive. If my luck holds,I will provide a test report this fall with the 450-400 hornady factory loads. Thanks

...the pictured Hornady seems to be more serrated in the ogive-portion than the woodleighs as well as using thinner jacket-plating in the ogive-area.......

The Hornady DSX though, I believe, is not an Interbond. There are 410 bullets that are Interlocks. How they perform on game I do not know.

Went on safari last year(Ozandjahe Safaris) for PG and the PH said Winchester comes there periodically and compares and tests various bullets. He supposedly spoke with Scovill(gun writer) and was warned off the Hornady Interbond bullets for PG.

How bigger hornady bonded bullets would do--I have no idea--
But if I were on Safari I would shoot Aframes in bolts and Woodleigh in Doubles. If I we going to cull a hundred animals , yes, absolutely I would look hard at the Hornady(cheaper alternative) but for just a few animals I would use super premium bullets.

If you want to shoot the 450/400 round Superior could load some with Woodleighs. They would absolutely get the job done if you did your part!!

If you want to try the Hornandy's and not go through the hassle of different rounds/regulation-go for it- Marrakai's bullet looks picture perfect to me!! It would be a wonderful real world test and could benefit all big game hunters!!

I'm just back from Botswana. One Cape Buffalo with one Hornady 500-gr. RN in .458 Lott. He went 15 yards. Bullet entered left shoulder, punched through ribs, where it expanded to about 82 cal, cleaned off the top of the heart and lodged in the right shoulder. Distance was 65 yards. As he ran, I put another one in his neck. It went through his brain and exited his skull, missing the horns by 2 inches. Why the second shot? Well, I'm 63, overweight and have had three knee operations. I'd already covered 4 miles that day, and didn't want to chase Mr. Buf another 10 feet. The first shot was a killer; the second just saved me the walking.

I hunted with Johan Calitz Safaris in the Mababe Area at Joveregh Camp. The concession is NG 41 and encompasses 3,000 sq. Km. (not a misprint - all but damnit of 2,000 sq. miles). Cost was in the $19,000 range for 10 days.
