Bison with double rifle
      #274402 - 02/12/15 01:11 PM

Hello all. I've just returned from a hunt for wild bison, about 200 miles north-west of Fort Saint John, British Columbia. A great camp, good guides, beautiful snow-covered Rockies, and saw lots of game, including a wolverine on day one. Attached is a photo of a four-year-old bull that I took at about 120 yards with my self-built double rifle in calibre .450 #2 Nitro Express. GREAT STUFF!!!

Good show! Nothing easy about hunting in deep snow.

What was the load(bullet at fps) for that hunt?

My lighter, longer-range load which basically duplicates a hot .45-70: 350 grain Hornady RNSP at 2280 fps.

Well done Ron! That's a great photo.
A fine trophy Bison taken with a great cartridge in a double that you built yourself.
Awesome!

Ron, congratulations on your successful hunt! It sounds like your trusty double did its part too. In October I had the opportunity to take my daughter bison hunting in eastern Wyoming. Here's a pic of my cutie with a two year old cow that she shot at 185 yards using her brother's Remington 770, chambered in .30-06.

double rifle looks realy good, must be special to build such a low power load in the big No. 2 case. do you use foam filler?

Lancaster, I use Dacron fibre as a filling under both the 350 and the 500 grain bullets.

Fantastic Ron, well done!! How did that bullet combo perform out of interest, was it recovered? Did the bull drop to your shot?

That is a hot load for a 45-70!

I took my bison with my 1886 .45-90 using left over DG loads; 450 grain Kodiak FMJ with flat nose at 2150 fps. It shot clean through both shoulders and was over-kill, but I was my first bison so I used ammo that I knew would be effective.

BTW, Very nice looking double rifle.

Ron,
Very nice job on the rifle and the buffalo! I'm sure you had lots of fun doing that hunt. I am currently working on getting the parts and loading stuff together to build a .450 #2 N.E. I am going to send you a P.M. along with a couple of questions. Thanks for posting this hunt, you made my day.
Bob

You are right, in that it is not a load for trapdoor Springfields or Lever Action rifles - however it is a normal load for bolt Siamese mauser actions and modern single shots like the Ruger #1 and Browning M78. A LOT depends on the throat & it's length, as well.

Daryl,
Unfortunately many shooters do not understand that there are three acceptable loading levels for the old .45-70, one for Trapdoor Springfield types, one for 1886 types, and one for Ruger #1 types. Obviously, shooting the latter in the former will almost certainly have catastrophic results!!!!

So true, however loading manuals have spoken of this since the 60's, where there was a segregation between Trapdoor-type loads and loads for the Model 1886 Winchester - see Hodgdon's #21 loading manual form the 60's, which I still have, of course. It is the one I started with.

Your 350gr. @ 2,260fps must have been fairly moderate in that big #2 case. It is a good load - I shot a moose with a similar loading - many years ago.

That is a good bullet.
