.577 NE build on 10GA Action
      #154095 - 18/02/10 07:10 AM

I've completed my 577 2 3/4" NE, below are some photos. Action is a Jana 10GA, with Greener Cross bolt, 24" Mono-Blocked Pac-Nor match grade barrels, 13.4 pounds. Load is 750 Grain bullet @ 1950 FPS for about 6500 FPE. Regulated at 50 yards, 1.5" composite group. Recoil is stout, not for children. Gun could easily handle the full 3" nitro load, and was proofed above those loads. Maybe the next build will be a 3" chambering.

PS: I should add, that I did a lot of tuning on the locks, new springs, pins, sear work. Also, stripped the wood, re-shaped the fore-stock, added and shaped the 1" Silvers Pad with Birds beak, stained and refinished the stock using Old English African finishing oil. Quarter rib, front sight, and ribs were made by me as well.

Nice looking gun. The weight is right for your load should be mildly "stimulating". Is that sideclips on your rifle?

Nice rifle, little large for the rabbits here. Did you make the monoblock or use the existing one?

Thanks, and I used the existing, shotgun barrels were crap, and not worth saving.

I have the exact 10ga and am planning on cutting the barrels back a bit and using it as a roundball gun. The original barrels are very thick walled to begin with.
I figure a rebarrel such as yours could be someday down the road.
Nice Job!

Looks like a nice build, i think i have seen some of those shotguns rebored to 8 gauge in the past.
What wall thickness does it have at the muzzle?

It looks good, Blain.
I'm impressed with the subtlety of your sleeving - the pics don't show any join at all. I don't suppose you just put the new barrels inside the old ones by any chance? If so, your weight finished up pretty good and would invite me to look at that angle.

Looks GREAT, Blaine. I am in need of a new leaf rear sight for my double rifle - would you give an address or name for the rear sight, Please. 2 leaves + a standing sight are more than needed for the double ML .58, but look pretty cool.

Daryl, that rear sight is made by Recknagel of Germany. It's available from both Brownell's and NECG. It comes in both 2-leaf and 3-leaf configuration. I used the same sight on my .303 and .450 #2 NE builds and I like it a lot.

Nice workmanship, and I am so glad to see the pictures posted here, for that will settle the numerous recent posts from guys who said such a conversion wasn't possible, dangerous, etc. I built four of these, all using these big Spanish 10 ga. mag. actions with Greener crossbolts, two of them using the same action (love the sideclips) used by this builder, Ronvella, but I have no cameras of any kind (wouldn't know how to use one if I had one), so have no way of taking or posting pictures---thus, my delight with this builder posting pictures. I learned process in Tech. College class from W. Ellis Brown prior to his writing book on same subject (now in 2nd edition), and I have built several conversions now, with 100% success. Ronvella has posted pictures of his excellent craftsmanship and conversions, so I am now hoping that those guys who think it can't be done will not speak so loudly any more. Ronvella, I found the same as you, that, using Spanish actions such as this, some of the internal parts need to be "redone," as they tried to turn them out originally to meet a dollar selling figure, cutting corners, not the best workmanship. But, the actions alone are more than strong enough for even a .600 NE., and make for the best .577 NE rifles, far superior to any and all 12 gauge actions for such large calibers.

I really like the work you did on the conversion, could you give a little more detail on how you rebarreled the gun? Did you line the exsisting barrels or cut off the old barrels and add the new ones? I am coming close to that phase in my project and am interested in learning all I can on what others did.

TKs Ron - it's the same make as the one on my .69 Sporting rifle. Blaine sent me the web site.

Blain-

That thing looks like a total hoot to shoot!
If I lived closer I'd be bringing booze and bacon to lever you into letting me shoot it.

What have you killed with it so far?

Cheers

It is a hoot to shoot. I just finished it, so I haven't "drawn blood yet". I was trying to work a deal with a couple SA outfits for a buff hunt. Would love to throw 14,000 pounds down range at one, or even better a tusker.

I think the first thing that it'll have a whack at is couple flee bag coyotes we have around here.

Three configurations:

1 standing, 1 folding.
1 standing, 2 folding.
1 standing, 3 folding.

And I think a single standing too.

Yes - bought my first one from Brownells back in 1986 - for $96.00 + exchange and duty.
The one I now need is the single leaf, ie; one folding - $80.00 US.
Just purchased 25 pounds of black powder as I was about out. That took the mad-money - $550.00.
Dang guns I prefer to use go through over a pound each trail walk.

Well I finished upgrading the springs using some nice stiff ones from Brownells, perfect fit, and man those things (strikers) SNAP now. Tuned the triggers to match the new springs, reduced creep and reduced the pull.

Interesting work and well done. What are the beasts you are hoping to hunt with your new rifle? Should be able to kill anything on earth.

Thanks!

Barrels are regulated like any other double rifle would be; milled wedge, solder, file, shoot, adjust, file, shoot, cuss, bleed, shoot, solder, burn hand, file....you get the idea. I have them shooting POA at 50 yards.

Ultimately a buff of some sort. Possibly one in OZ, depending on price. Since I still have lots of life left in me, I'm hoping to do at least three trips to Africa, and one to OZ. If the wife would stop spending all my money I could go this year.

Really it was Maraki(sp) who, with his Greener .577, got me thinking about this one. Where is he these days?

Toughest thing has been finding quality 10GA actions. They just don't exist. Centaurs are good if you can find them.
