Thanks Blain. Having checked out the dimensions, velocities etc, I take it you think the .30/40 safer than the .303 British because of its lower pressures, despite having a slightly larger rim dia. and base.

Really just personal preference. Either would be fine.

Blain,
Amen to your comments re that other site. One particularly arrogant and obnoxious individual there, who always seems to be going out of his way to be rude to somebody, recently called me "The village idiot of Oshawa, Ontario, because I DARED to be critical of a gunwriter who he obviously idolizes. It reminded me of the kind of reaction that I would expect from my seven-year-old grandson if I criticized his latest X-Men Action Hero!! IMHO, better the village idiot of Oshawa than the buffoon that HE is!

Thanks Blain,
the long neck of the .30/40 certainly makes it look the part and new .308" barrels are probably easier to find.

The .30/40 would make a nice DR round. I would be mindful of pressure. It and the .303 Brit. can be a bit dicey in a DR.

Have you contacted Arrietta to get an opinion of what pressure your action is able to handle? I think I would do that in any event.

Good luck with your project, and keep us informed.

Whitey,
I get out that way pretty often during bird season. We hunt roosters just over the KS border. Do you know Ellis Brown? He hosts a "elephant shoot" every summer where we get out the big bores. Ellis and several others in attendance are gunsmiths and many of the arms being shot are build by us shooters. I can forward you more info on the shoot if you like.

P.S. I also have an addiction to single shot rifles.

Steve,
Where does Ellis Brown hold that shoot? I'd be SERIOUSLY interested in driving down with a few of the guns that I've built and taking part!

Ron

Ron and Whitey,
Ellis is the chap that wrote the book on building double rifles. I have shot the .450 NE he built that is pictured in his book several times. It shoots too! The Elephant hunt is held in Ft. Collins, CO and this year it will take place on August the 7th. A great time is had by all shooting, then eating and drinking. Scotch seems to be a favorite for some odd reason.

Whitey, I do have a shop http://bertramandco.com/index.html

I have a double 12bore project I have never got to....and way too many singles. But can you really have too many Brit singles?

Steve keep us posted. I might drive up just to see the rifles and visit. AS far as The Brits go have a few. Just got my Fields Paten 22LR back. But have got rid of a lot of them at 73 you don't
need to many projects and these DR's have got my senile old mind full of possible ideas. Whitey
