OK I had to have a title to start this post. I have a question for those of you that build your own monoblocks. I have finished fitting mine and wondered how I get the smoke/soot out of the pores of the metal short of polishing which I have to do anyway. I will need to solder the barrels in and want a very clean surface to solder to. I have the block bored and threaded but they are really sooty. I used a kerosene lamp to smoke and other than having to clean the bench the overhead light and the wall of soot I have finished that stage. I am ready to move on.

Stick it in a dishwasher.

No that is not a joke or sarcasm. It works great but fresh metal will rust like a bastard it is so clean.

Regards

I've never tried the dishwasher, but Dawn dish soap and very hot water, run a bottle brush in it and twist it around until it's clean has worked for me. Might try the dishwasher next time.

Well I got the wife a new dishwasher so that might be a good way to break it in. I have a good brush but thought there might be a better way or solvent that would desolve the stuff. But it always comes down to elbow grease and hot water.

Have you tried starting fluid/ either? Brake clean?

I use these alot on nasty greasy truck parts.

Mike,
I'm with you on the brakeclean. It's great where soldering is to be done as it is supposed to leave no residue at all.
The dishwasher sounds like a great idea as well!

On polished bearings races it does leave a slight white film that wipes off with a clean rag. The 'green' non-florinated stuff doesn't seem to work as well as the florinated IMO.
I'd use this rather than be beaten soundly about the head and shoulders by SWMBO for sticking anything in her dishwasher!

It works great on tools also.

But the downside is you have to marinate them in oil afterwords, i have now bought new tools.
