Unbelievable!!! I learn something every day At least the idea was original to me!!

& me too, I've pondered this for a bit now, just didn't have the courage to float it out there. Like the old saying, theres nothing new under the sun, & I've realised long ago from reading these forums, if I've thought it, then a bob to a nob of goat sh!t someone else has to. any more info on that thing, who where & when sort of stuff?

I guess that the answer would be, yes, it could be done.

The question would be, how well would it work and how long would it last?
The 600NE would be a hard one, due to the size of the action required, the strength required to handle the very high breech thrust, the weight required to keep recoil anywhere near tollerable, not to mention the handling of the finished rifle if you managed to sort out the strength and weight issues.

The 600NE will really put the best of any shotgun action to the test in terms of strength.

Personally, I'd love to own a 600NE, but I think it would be difficult to ever achieve adequate action strength, tollerable recoil, and good handling from a shotgun to rifle conversion, with full power 600NE loads.

The Merkel 140a seems to be built on a 20ga action which is made for the dr's but used also for the shotguns.

So, what of their 12ga action???

Only good for up to 577 or also the .600???

Thanks

Ben

The folks at Merkel say their big bore rifles are built on the 12 gauge receiver with no additional modifications to the metallurgy. They also said the same is true of Rigby who use the Merkel actions. Merkel's biggest is the .500 but I believe Rigby goes up higher on the same action. I guess it depends on how much more pressure is generated in the chamber of a .600 verses that of the .500. Also, the barrel width will be a factor to consider.

Hi

Nope I just mailed them and was contacted by Elke;

Dear Sir,

yes, it is true, our s/s rifles are built on a 20 ga receiver.

The difference is that the receiver of a rifle has a higher hardness.

Safari rifles, also .500NE rifles, are built on a 20ga receiver too.

Mit freundlichen Grüßen/Best regards

Elke Weiss

Very good then! She would certainly know. Olaf, Ralf, and Sebastien Weiss are all engravers at Merkel. It's better to go directly to the source for that information rather than speak to the importer, GSI, as I did. I am surprised it's the 20 ga receiver they use for the big rifles as opposed to the 12!

As am I!

I am annoyed though as I mailed asking if the 12ga is of the same robustness, and can be used for larger cals etc etc or custom jobs........no reply.

Ok I shall mail again now........

If the 12ga is just a grade up on the 20ga in every way(strength size tolerance etc) then it well.......holds the greatest of promise!

Not true. The 600 is a renowned killer and has fabulous penetration performance.

The only draw back is the enormous weight of the gun.

As far as building a custom 600NE on a random shotgun action, no thank you.

Generalwar,

Not all 600's are pig heavy. A 14 pound 600 is just about right. Anything heavier than 14.5 pounds does not swing fast.

Keep the barrels to 24" max.

Make the barrels heavy at the breech and thin at the muzzle so it handles fast.
Barrel weight between 118-120 ounces.
Forend- about 10 ounces
Receiver and stock weight 6 pounds- 96 ounces
total weight- 14 to 14-1/4 pounds

I spoke with Recknagel at the Shot Show concerning their sidelock double rifle action. Yes it is available however they did not have any on the shelf at this time.

Respectfully.

The recoil energy of a .600 in a 14lb gun at 116 ftlbs, would be the same as a 7lb 51/2 oz .505 Gibbs or a 5lb 9 oz .470 NE

Any opinions on what the 12ga action would be capable of???

Does ANYONE know what is used on those .577 Rigby things?

Thanks

Ben

Bramble,

Have you ever shot a .600NE double? If so please tell me about your experience.

Oh yes....
Just shooting a 900 grain with 10 drams in a 14 Ibs gun will push hard...imagine a .600 going 100 feet fast in the same gun...No way.
I good sixhundred ought to weigh approx 17Ibs

Here is me firing a FULL load in the 10 bore...my front foot actually "lifts" a little..

But of course Peter.....

Though a modern 10 bore nitro rifle with a full load is different to a 10 bore bp gun with a full load!

Guy I bought my Rigby off has one...........775/10 bore nitro express double rifle. Its 18,000 grand+

.775 N.E./10 Bore Magnum D/Rifle-Shotgun by Greener-Hambrusch, one of only two in the World. The Ultimate Big-game double rifle, with add. shotgun barrels in 10bore 3.5", Cased in Oak and Brass, Accessories, plus Mould, Dies, Turned Brass, FAC Offers in excess of £18,500

http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/empiregunsight/Stock.htm

I dread to imagine the potency........
