Jet
try Simplex here in Oz, they do a .404 amongst many other calibers as well as the old 577-450MH.
They do a very good job & are well finished - yes I have a few of them myself!

Great calibre & plenty of reloading data about!

Opened up standard length......between the wars, likely surplus military (thumb cutout) action?
Action & barrel original, bottom metal & stock are new UK restoration.

I have heard good things, hence why I bought it, the component sourcing is a bit hard in Australia at the moment, unfortunately, but have a month or so to gather everything.
Unfortunately, mine won't have that nice a stock! I have gone Tupperware as this is going to be my travel bang stick with a 300wm barrel as well.

Well at least you do have Bertram Brass & Woodleigh there actually IN Oz...... here in the ‘States we are handcuffed with import issues and depend on the vagaries of supplier whims.
Good luck, a great calibre choice!

He does look after you. Google Bertram brass for the brass. If they have seconds get a few of them for your load development and practice. I did with the 416 Rigby and they even went to Africa and have not failed yet.

Yes. None of the local gunshops ever have in stock what I need. Some may stock Woodleigh bullets now. But the usual suspect calibres only usually. Doubt .423 bullets would be in stock. None stock Bertram brass or bullets to my knowledge?

Telephone them and try to buy by phone. I don't know anyone with a decent online selling site, in Australia, selling either. Anyone know? One seller used to, but relocated to NZ. Too hard to buy from OS.

Both of these guys and businesses support clubs like the BGRC so are good guys.

Thanks

Yes, have messaged Bertram.

funnily enough a local gunshop has bertram, hornady and Norma cases. trying to stick to ozzy these days. was just seeing if anyone has any to unload before going new. only getting rifle end of Jan so will get hold of the manufacturers in jan for some components
then the fun starts of finding a nice load
John you also have a 404? have you tried 350gr projectiles?

No only 400 grs so far.

I don't think I have any 350 grs yet (?). Too close to 400 grs IMO, I would prefer a 300 gr lighter bullet.

I do have some 257 grs to try.

The Gunshops here don't really support either Woodleigh or Bertram here as they don't get the margins. Woodleigh a little but Bertram not at all. When asked why not the Gushops reply that no one wants them which of course is horse shit. Both Woodleigh and Bertram can't keep up with demand, but all from selling direct to the public as the stores won't support them.

We had a shoot last week and Geoff McDonald was there and I asked him how he is going and he replied flat out. The topic of guns stores came up he commented that they all try and screw him down to nothing and compare his Prices with Hornady of which they sell heaps. But it's comparing apples with oranges, so he basically tells them to shove it. People jut buy direct from them now. Both Woodleigh and Bertam ship same day.

If a manufacturer is selling all they make, ie: "can't keep up" at retail to the end user, they are not going to sell wholesale to anyone which will cut their profits by 30% or whatever the markup would be. It isn't that the stores won't support them, it's that they won't take a loss in selling to a store. Now, if they sold to a retailing store for the same price they are getting from current customers, the retail price to the public would go up 30% to 50%, thus overall sales would diminish due to the "new" retail pricing being too bloody high, compared to other bullets & brass on the market.

I really like the Norma brass in 404J and 375 Flanged Mag. I have had bad results with Bertram in 375 Flanged Mag but ok in 500/450 3 1/4” and 500 3 1/4” when I had it.

Woodleigh bullets of course. I am loading with RE15 and Kynoch foam wad.

If you still need dies I will have a dig around over Christmas as I am sure I had two sets and also a spare Lee Factory Crimp die ( I bought a few in special order as was cheaper postage per die. Then gave two away )

All I have to add here is a “good on you” to both Bertram and Woodleigh. Were it not for these companies a lot of vintage rifle shooters would be screwed and their rifles reverted to wall hanger status.
I can only envy you in Oz being able to ring up either company and (if in stock) have the esoteric vintage brass or bullets in hand with only waiting out the Post.
- Mike

By the way:
Nobody has mentioned it, but I will......
My Rodda .404 in the pictures arrived complete with the H&H scope mounts/rings for a 30mm scope. I checked.....it would have been relatively financially silly to try to obtain and fit a set of H&H 1” rings.
In my (less than) humble opinion I cannot on this earth figure why such a monster excrescence as a 30mm tube could be chosen for a classic rifle. That bulky cow of a scope, while it is really nice, still offends my sensibilities.
I shoot it mostly with the iron sights......

thanks Rockdoc, if you could have a dig and let us know. Have found some but potentially only Feb before I can get them, and would have liked to have some loaded up to go for a play before then.
have been going to the gunshops for the woodleighs, guess helps to support them a bit too. slowly transitioning all of our rifles over to woodleighs now.

Daryl, I get your point however in this case it is not correct. Both Bertram and Woodleigh have a price that they sell to the trade which is well below what they sell to the public for. So there is plenty of room for the gunstores to make some money and the manufacturers to also make some money. However the problem is that 95%of the product is imported by five big importers and they are reasonably powerful. OSA imports Hornady and they are very aggressive and work on volumes to get their sales figures. The same with Zeiss scopes which they are also the importer of. Big margins for the stores especially if they move lots of stock. You go to any gunstore here in Australia and there will be more Hornady bullets by far. Bugger all Speer, Nosler, Barnes and almost no Swift at all.

It's the same with Winchester and shotgun shells. They offer big discounts for volume sales and extra discounts for selling only Winchester shells. Other brands come and go but they can't compete.

Both Bertram and Woodleigh only started selling in volume direct to the public because the stores wouldn't support them. it's pretty sad really.

Matt.

Mike, I feel your pain.
I put together a .404 on a pre 64 model 70 for a friend. He came over with the same glass as you have there and I told him to return it and find one of the older 1" scopes.
We ended up with a vanilla VX2 1-4x20
I was making mounts for the rifle and the 30mm was just too high for the original stock. With the smaller tube and eye bell, the scope is absolutely on the deck and not far different from the irons.

Good shooting

3DogMike you can buy the rings relatively inexpensively from the UK, dearer than other rings but not the price H&H will charge. I will have a look for the link and PM you. I did enquire as to whether they were making ring for doubles as my H&H 375 Flanged Mag has different scope bases/rings and they said they were considering making them, must check again as I quite like their double rifle setup.

Cheers, Chris

Funny that. I tried THREE TIMES to get MacDonald to allow me to buy Woodleigh projectiles direct from him to sell on the internet ie NE, and was told the retailers wouldn't like it ie online sales.

Later one of our members for a short time, setup a country town backyard shed gunshop, and mostly sales through a website and on another internet forum. First thing he did was sell Woodleigh bullets with huge discounts and thousands of dollars of sales. Exactly what I was told I could not do or even buy Woodleigh bullets for sale in the first place.

Allowing Woodleigh bullets to be sold on NE would have been a small way to help financially support this NE site at no cost to them, and all the gratuitous support and free advertising Woodleigh gets here, and expects.

We fossils remember reloading larger cartridges pre Woodleigh, Bertram etc.

We did what we could. In Australia we were lucky to have Peter Davern making dies.

For the 404J RWS Ammo was relatively cheap and a source of cases once fired. For the life of me I can’t remember what bullets I reloaded!

We are lucky now as NitroX says. Heck, you can even buy 12b Paradox cartridges! Just wish I hadn’t sold my WR Explora..... amongst others.

Interestingly for my 500/450 3 1/4” Magnum NE, older Bertram brass is too thick and requires reaming. Fortunately latter cases are just right, not as thin as Kynoch but thin enough to chamber without work. Bruce Bertram said he had probably changed them a bit over 30yrs!

Yep we can be thankful and are lucky in Australia, that we do have Woodleigh, Bertram and Simplex . Makes all this archaic cartridge and rifle shooting stuff so much easier! And with the ability to telephone and buy direct, so much easier than ordering on the never-never from Europe or the USA.
