8x68S Cases and Barrel

I have 100 unfired, RWS cases in their original boxes for sale.

Also an unused 25.5" sporter weight barrel in 8x68S that is short chambered and threaded for Mauser 98 and clones. I do not know the brand of this rifle but a gunsmith friend examined the bore with a borescope and declared it to be a quality barrel that should shoot well.

I am asking $Aud550 for the cases and barrel but will consider reasonable offers.

Buyer to pay postage.

Hmmmmmm....... Daaaannng..I have an FN action, a Pecar 6x scope... How much work is it to make a 30.06 into an 8x68..?

I don't think it is a lot of work. The bolt face needs to be opened a little bit and the extractor modified slightly. Basically it is less work than converting to something like .300 Win Mag because the 8x68S case is belt-less and smaller in diameter to the magnum case.

You would need to play with the feed rails and lengthen the magazine box.

8x68S base diam .522" rim .510" case length 2.62" cartridge length 3.38" shoulder diam .473"

300WM BASE.5126" RIM .530" Case length 2.60 to 2.62" cart length 3.30" shoulder .4891"

30-06 base.470" rim .473" case lth 2.498" cart lth 3.34"

The given cart length for the 8X68S is conservative. Might be the official specs but 200 grain + bullets have to seated deep and hinder the performance. the 8mmRem Mad case is 2.85" Cart length is 3.57" This is true magnum length and with the length of 8mm 200, 220 grain pills you really need close to this sort of length to get the best out of the 8x68s.

My 8x68s is built on a M17 action and the Cart length is is 3.59" for 200 and 220 grain projectiles. Monometals can also be seated out. Just need to have it long throated. This way you can get it closer the Rem Mag. It will never match the Rem but wont be as far behind.

Did a bit of checking with those who have 8X68's and if you open the Mauser up .158" this will let you seat long projectiles without eating into the powder space to much. Mauser's get opened up a bit more than this to fit 375H&H, 404J cartridges.

Ash, I would say go for it, it is a great cartridge.

Rule303 thats a lot more than I knew of the `68`s and makes me wonder how many own/use them that are not getting the best out of theirs if not doing as you prescribed. Tar.

Gryp the performance increase is not in the hundreds of feet per second an no animal would probably notice but the gain with long/heavy projectiles is more than AI a case will give you.

I was hoping to sell both cases and barrel as a package, otherwise I might get stuck with the barrel which, without the cases, will be of no use to me.

I am starting to think that I might just have to go ahead with the 8x68S project myself.

Good idea. Build one. Anything with a 375H&H bolt face will save you having the bolt modified.
