Weren't some of these rifles, rifles ordered for the Russian Army? I remember Czarist Russia made an order of lever action Winchesters for its Army. What calibre were those?

yes the rifles in finland are sporter made from this old russian military rifles in 7,62x54R when the military caliber became illegal for hunting by law

Almost all finnish Winchester m95`s were originally russian military version which caliber was 7,62x53R. Most of them has been converted to finnish factory wildcat calibers i.e. 8,2x53R and 9,3x53R as you could see if look lancasterīs foto text more carefully. The reason for that caliber transform was contemporary law which said that rifle caliber for moose hunting had to be bigger than 7,62.

I would snap one or two of those up for those prices quickly if they were here and did not cost me a $1000 (???) or at least $500 to get here ...

I'm tempted myself, not only by the 95's but also the early Type B. There is also a decent prewar Model 70 supergrade in .220 Swift and a couple of interesting Sakos in the sale, not to mention a Korth revolver and a couple of interesting Smiths. As you say though, the cost of getting these to the US including importer fees, transport, customs duties, and freight forwarding will be very close to $500 per gun unless one buys 10 guns or more, and not much less even then. (I always estimate $250 per gun beforehand to ease the buying decision, but know full well it'll come in at $500).

..every time I see a Winchester in .405 or .50/110 with a steel crecent buttplate I see a misconception where the designers still adapted a frontloader rifle design to the then-new rifles.
I have shot a lot of Winchesters with crecent buttplate..they are slippery on the shoulder, the shooter have to in-a-cripple-like posture mash his head down to the stock = poor ergonomics.
The shotgun butt however improved a lot on the type rifles. Yes..the crecent buttplate does look gracefull in a collectors cabinet.

Well despite the ergonomics of the rifle they're still great. I've seen one Russian contract Winchester 1895 here in the United States and that was in a museum.

Yep!!.

36 grain Norma 201(very similar to IMR 3031)to a 270grain Lyman leadbullet. Never chronographed it but it was accurate and packed enoungh power.

The cases were reformed .30-40krag. I sized the lead bullets .378cal. If I used .379cal leadbullets the caseneck touched the chamberwalls.

I had a 1895 made in 1903 with round barrel. Lovely rifle.

Nice pick up, Huvius! Post it here? If i get a 38-72 its going to be an 1895 with that rapid taper octagon barrel.
