Interesting rifle. Didn't the Norwegian Krags differ from the American ones in having two locking lugs for the 6.5x55 round?

That is way cool! I'd love to hear more about it and see more pics of it. I've kept my eyes open for a nice old US Krag sporter for some time now. Seems most were converted to single shots or wildcats.

Lovely rifles! Just keep in mind that the Krag actions (the Norwegian at least) is not suitable for the modern pressurized 6,5x55 SM ammunition. I guess its the same with the 8x57 as well, they made a "8x57 Moderat" with a weaker load. There's also supposedly an issue with a change of POI in rain due to the locking lugs not being aligned - or something.

I'm no expert and have never fired a Krag myself even though I got a match version two stories down so take the above with a grain of salt as it's information I "grew up with".

Maybe someone else would correct me?

Lancaster:

Is that last one a single-shot or is there some form of magazine?

Also, every time I see one of these sporters from the pre-WW2 era that has remained in its country of origin, I wonder what its story is, that is, how it was hidden away during the War years or what happened to it during that time.

Yes it does. lancaster, single shot. Nice rifle! I really like the top one as well.
I've really enjoyed every KragJ I've held and worked the bolt on. Never owned one, though. That makes me feel I've missed a owning a great rifle.

this one looks very german influenced, I think parts like swifels were bought from german dealer. the horn trigger guard is typical Suhl made.

I don't recall the Danish barrel being stepped. Any chance it's a replacement?

Boy you come up with some treasures Lancaster!
Thank you for sharing & making us aware of some surprising innovative developments that have happened over your side of the world!

Correct me if I'm wrong here - the old 11.7x40 R Greenland cartridge was obsolete, so the powers that be resleeved in a newer 8x58 Krag barrels (Assuming here rebored to 11.6x40R danish) hence smoothbored & the reason why there is a second thread on that barrel?

From the article:-
"The Remington 1867 breech-loading rifle was used in the Danish army until 1919 and in its navy until its complete replacement in 1942.

Part of these rifles, very old but perfectly functional, were sent to Greenland (autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark) as hunting rifles.

The original cartridge for this rifle, 11.7x51.6 R, was no longer in production so a solution was developed to keep these venerable weapons active.

Thus, 8 mm M1889 8 x 58 R Krag-Jorgensen sheaths were used that have the same measurements but cut them just below the shoulder, where both cartridges differ.

This cartridge was in production until the mid-1960s as the "Greenland Cartridge". There was an 11.7x41 R Danish Mod. 1878, but although the measurements are similar they have nothing to do with it.

The "Greenland Cartridge" was built after WWII on recycled military pods, often with pistons marked NP (Norma Patronenfabrik). The Royal Greenland Trading Company appears to have converted some 8 x 58 R Krag-Jorgensen rifles to this caliber.

Typically, they are loaded with black powder and lead bullets with a grease slot. The length of the sheath varies between 39.5 to 40.3 mm. All have military markings from 1910-1942, and some have the symbol '*' or 'o' that indicate previous refills."

One way of getting around a logistical problem I guess!

yes, thats also how I understand it
this second thread was probably to use this barrel in a remington rolling block rifle

there was never a gun chambered for the 11,6x40R greenland cartridge but it was only a budget solution to make ammo for the old remington rolling blocks using 8x58RD brass. after ww2 the rolling block was not seen as an interesting antique but as cheap iron and the typical native hunter in greenland was not swimming in money but working under extrem conditions to make a living.
he was needing a rugged hunting tool with inexpensive ammo.the little shotgun cartridge was probably used to shoot snow hare and fox on short range with little as possible holes in the pelt.

The Danish military Krag has a barrel jacket just like the German M88 commission rifle and the Belgian M89 Mauser. Imho the second thread was used to screw on this jacket. Maybe it's a worn miltary barrel simpply bored out smooth. Or using the barrel jacket on a sporterised rifle allowed the use of the military stock without extensive work on the barrel inletting.

seems to be indeed like you saying
I was also believing that the barrel was screw into some kind of reduction insert to use it in a receiver who had a bigger thread. something I would feel comfortable when using a little shotgun cartridge.

I had once a barrel like this for a Haenel Aydt schützen rifle, think the barrel here came from Suhl.
