Powder Coating Cast Bullets!
      #269029 - 07/08/15 05:55 PM

G'Day Fella's,

I have been viewing others on-line doing this for some time now but not attempted it myself.
As you would expect with us Humans, there are some of us that can re-think a situation and come up with alternatives to the original methods! So has been the case with this procedure!
This has resulted in a Once only Coating and Baking method, as opposed to some others required Two separate Coatings and Baking sessions!!!

FYI, here is what has to be the simplest method that I have seen, to coat and then fuse Powder Coating powder, onto cast bullets! Please excuse our good mate on this video (Harold), as he does cover a number of issues and this takes time but this is all useful information.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irF984ukYsI
Personally, I'll be using some small Tupperware type containers to do my coating, as I already use this method (but different containers) for HBN coating jacketed bullets!

Also for more information on this, Google up; "Powder Coating Cast Bullets", and see what comes up...

Further to this method, rather than just place all the bullets rolling around on a mesh tray, I want to use either sheet metal with perforated holes and or woven mesh etc (with appropriate size holes to suit bullets being coated), of a size to fit in my oven. I want to sit the bullets individually into these holes or mesh, for an improved coating and finish (I hope?).

Doh!
Homer

Edit Homer;
Here is an even more simple method, where the person places the cast bullets in the Tupperware container with some Powder Coating (PC) powder, and gently swirls the container for a minute or two!

Homer, it is well worth the investment to buy a powder gun if you are going to be doing big bullets.

See some of mine here:

G'Day Fella's,

Further to this subject, I was wondering about adding some amount of Hexagon Boron Nitride (HBN) powder to the Powder Coating powder, to assist in bullet lubrication whilst transiting the barrel.
Whilst the following doesn't specifically address this, it may be of interest to some?

I've been PCing cast for a couple of years now and I like it very much. It even helps on some cartridges that saves you on the lube process.

G'Day Fella's,

The article I have, came from the SSAA rag, from the last year or two.
It's titled "Hi-Tek bullet coating of cast projectiles" by Geoff Smith.
The contact email for Mr Joe Ban of Hi-Tek, is; jandmspecializedproducts@gmail.com

Yes mate, I do size, and attach copper Gas Checks, after I have coated these Rifle bullets.

I mix 20 Grams of conventional Powder Coating powder, with 100 millilitres of Acetone, in a screw lid container. I then decant an amount of this blended liquid, into a Wide Mouth, screw lid jar, that already contains the bullets I want to coat.

D'oh!

I have a couple of questions.
1. Does this coating cause greater wear on old, soft steel barrels?
2. How fast can coated bullets be driven.
The answer to these two questions determines (in my mind) whether coated bullets are appropriate for black powder express rifles.

If using black powder loads, I would expect to have to use a black powder lubricant to keep foiling soft.

G'Day Fella's,

85lc;
1) No idea.
and
2) apparently, 2000fps is it's limit (rifling type dependent, I'm sure).

Plus, as DarylS suggested;
Quote:
