That's an interesting post Eljefedouble, thanks.

However, the thought of tumble lubing the bullets, sizing them and then lubing them again seems like more work than just running them through the lubrisizer whereby I size and lube them in one operation... or am I missing something?

I only ever used the Lee Liquid Alox for my 380 Rook bullets and I stopped using it for those as soon as I discovered spray on motorcycle chain wax.

Old Brit,
There are many variations to DIY lube, the last time I was reading it up there, I was so full of Stearate's and Babbitt and cofactors, I just slunk back to pan lubing . But, do look around, Bens Red or Felix lube might be just right for your collection of wax, especially to mix up and use in a lube sizer.
WRT the Lee Alox, I just toss the projectiles in an used yogurt or icecream tub, squirt a few drops of Lee Alox and give them a shake rattle and roll for a few minutes, prior to size and seat.So far I've only done that for 230 gr Lee TL .452"
The 7 mm and .30 cal,I pan or dip lube.
I'm planning to use soy wax and BW ,equal amounts, with ATF and 2T,for my next batch of lube, with a tsp of carnauba wax.
Cheers

Eljefedouble,

I think you're right, it's the experimenting that's part of the fun of this game. I have some copper based anti-sieze grease in the garage. I was wondering about some of that with the wax. All I need to make sure of now is a continuing supply of the wax!!!!

before you mix , suggest you check these guys out? some one may have done it already...

And with all that BW, Felix lube might be therapeutic

Felix Lube formula (for smokeless)

2 Tablespoons mineral oil
1 Tablespoon castor oil
1 Tablespoon Ivory, or homemade soap (grated)
1 Tablespoon Lanolin
Beeswax - Piece approximately 3 1/2" X 3 1/2" X 1 "

Heat mineral (baby) oil until it starts to smoke.

Add castor oil, and stir continuously for 1/2 hour.

Sliver the soap, and stir into the mixture a little at a time, until melted.

Add the beeswax before the lanolin, and then when that is melted, reduce or remove the
heat and add the lanolin, thus not running any risk of burning or scorching the lanolin.

1 teaspoon of carnauba wax can be added to give a shiny bore. This can be found on the
seal of Makers Mark whiskey, or the red wax on cheese from the supermarket.

Once made, let cool. This can be remelted in a microwave, and poured into the lubrisizer.

me?I find it therapeutic-casting, mixing lubes.
cheers

When melting and mixing and heating flammable materials, it is best to use a double boiler when possible. Directly placed on the heat source is a good way to have a fire that does not want to go out.

Many years ago I acquired (read I paid very little) a used thermostatically controlled electic frying pan with an aluminium cover. It's a moderate and controllable heat source and works very well for melting lubes.

I am reading alot about powder coating cast bullets. No lube needed and one can push them to almost same velocity as jacketed without any leading.
Cast, powder coat, bake, and size is what one does. Gas check is optional. I am looking into this process to eliminate the lubing process and the mess. Getting higher velocities is somewhat interesting also.

Spray-on moly coating on cast bullets can work in a similar fashion, although I didn't push the .50 cal. bullets past 1,600fps - plain based ones at that. No baking needed, just spray it on and let them dry - load and shoot.

Sparks,
Harbor Freight is one prime reason why you can try electrostatic powder coating. $65 or so for a spray gun set up, sometimes cheaper on eBay, $5 a POUND of coating powder
Last time I checked, it wa AUD 12 per OUNCE here in Oz and the EPC gun etc was in excess of double the US prices.
I seemed to get fairly decent results on cast Lee .452 , 230 gr in a .45 ACP. wIth 4.5 gr Red Dot, using Duplicolor Hi temp black which needs to be sprayed then baked for 2 hours.

Old Brit ,

if you have any soy candles , try a few tsp of that added to your primary BW mix. (some users advocate upto 60:40 BW/ Soy mix)
Because of its low melting temperatures, soy wax may be just right for the UK climate, with the addition of a couple of tsp. of ATF or 2T.
It will ' hold ' the oils well, and give your lube a tacky consistency,to fill the lube grooves without flaking. At 1000 fps, may do the trick.

Cheers
