Nice looking knife - I assume elk means moose in Finland. I personally prefer 5 1/2" to 6" (13.97cm to 15.24cm) of blade for moose. Makes the job less than 25 minutes for an old man like me.

The advantage of these group hunts is there probably is eight or more people all wielding knives skinning etc.

There is only very few makers, Roselli is thou one.

But if you ever haven´t had any custom-made puukko for yours purposes, you just don´t know from what a real high quality puukko feels when using it. It´s good to remember too that puukko isn´t any special tool for skinning, it´s even better abilities comes out when whittling. If you are skillfull enough (as my father used to be) you could do very conscious wood works with ordinary high quality puukko.

One sample below:



Both Karesuando and Marttiini are in barely moderate grade in my scale. The best of Marttiini`s are IMO their modern kitchen and skinning knifes. Their traditional puukkos finishing is much worse than, for example, norse Brusletto`s ones have.

Thanks I will check into that Roselli axe . Interesting that you mention Brusletto knives , I have two of these made in Norway , one has a Damascus blade and the other is laminated . Both are ok knives but in no way can these hold an edge as good as my old Marttiini's or my Karesuando skinning knives. I guess it depends on the knife and the model a person has. Beautiful work! I am only a skinner not a carver!

Noways is very normal that factory-made skandinavian puukkos have quite soft blade. I think the reason is that such a blade is easier to sharpen. Skinning knives are then different "animals", they always have harder plates.

I also have a 7" general purpose Finnish Puukko made by a fellow named Antti Makinen that I traded a Norwegian ski trooper for while I was Skiing in the US Marines in Norway . While too large for skinning it is a superb all purpose military knife with a beautiful dark Birch handle and is very sharp.

Yes ,I went to his website and the knife I have is similar to the 15 cm Leuku but mine has a dark forge darkened military blade and a beautiful dark Birch handle with fantastic grain. Mäkinen has his name and Suomi trademark stamped in the blade .The Norwegian fellow I traded for it (he wanted my USMC Kabar to collect)said it was a special custom military knife and he could get another made.We both got what we wanted.

IMO Fang´s and Tracker´s blades comes from Laurin metalli, Lapua. Those blades are cheap as dirt, normaly less that 10€/piece. Here is attached a link where you can find those puukkos price here in Finland.

By the way, if you like those cheap factory made puukkos so much, you should sell away all your fine rifles and just buy a .308 TIKKA T3 with plastic stock. It is as good and usefull as those puukkos.
