19th Century French gun makers
      #229362 - 28/04/13 07:30 AM

Morning all

I posted last week trying to translate some french on a gun. I have finally worked it out.

Now I am wondering if anyone can shed some light on Ferdinand Claudin.

So far all I can find out is he was a gun maker in Paris from 1833 to 1890 and exhibited at 3 Great Exhibitions in the 1830's and 40's.

More particularly I am trying to ascertain what period of time he operated out of an address (in French) Rue Joquelet 1, Paris.

Many thanks

I want to see photos of this gun.

I don't have date specifics, but every Claudin long gun I've seen has been high quality, some very ornate.

Post photos!

Cheers

Tinker

I promiose I will post photos. But am unable to for a little while.

You are right, it is very ornate and what I think is a very special gun.

Others that have seen it think it to be gaudy and over the top, but I like it.

From my reference books:
Claudin: Parisian Gunmaking family: Sebastien-Ferdinand, Desire-Henri, Ferdinand (son).
At the Paris exhibit in 1839 (Bronze medal), 1844 (ditto), 1849 (ditto), 1855 (1st class medal), 1867 (silver medal), 1878 (Gold medal)& London 1851 (Prize medal) & 1862.
Numerous Patents from 1850 to 1878.
Located 9, rue de la Tonnellerie in 18389, 1, rue Joquelet from 1844-1860, and 38 bld des italiens from 1861-1878.
Seems to have exited the business in 1890.

Best regards,
WC-
