Wooly Mammoth - What Rifle and Round
      #9473 - 19/02/04 08:37 AM

Guys,

I have noticed that the Japenese have decided to clone the Wolly Mammoth. I think they are using the one that was found in Alaska (or parts thereof). I remember one was found northeast of Fairbanks when I lived there. Anyway, my hypothetical question is - "If you could hunt a Wooly Mammoth (about 1 1/2 or 2 X the elephant) what gun and round would you use?" For my money, I think I would use either 458 Lott or 505 Gibbs. I would love to see your replies.

Trex

...turnbolt in .500 jeffery or .505 gibbs (as you suggested)...

...double in .600ne or .700ne (anyone here actually shoot one of these behemoths?)...

I believe the DNA from the Mammoth the Japanese have came out of Siberia in 1985. I actually tried to get samples myself for a similar cloning project. Thats what I do in real life. As to what I'd choose to hunt one well a .600 Overkill of course. -Rob

hmmm depends on how you plan to kill them.

through the vitals, 460wby with solids (velocity is a must to get through all that "stuff")

brian? most any of the big flanged cartridges in a double, hit 'em twice for good measure. I'd be scared of shattering a bullet at anything faster than about a 500/450

I would want a rifle that was interesting. Why? so when I dropped it to run the Wooly Mammoth would find it interesting long enough for me to escape. The ulitmate canned hunt though.

Nickudu had an article on an anti-tank round and that Mauser that was built around it was huge. Good for one shot and if it don't do the job, drop in front of the critter and hope it trips on it then run like hell.

I guess I would go for a Barrett Lite 50 semi autoloader in 50 caliber Browning. With the 750 grain Armor Piercing or incendiary rounds I think it would do the trick.

I believe I'd want the 600 OK in a M1A-style rifle buffered to make recoil tolerable and functional with stripper clips

Hey.... you asked!

AAH, what the hell, let's just go to a 20mm and be done with it. Must say though, it does have a wee bit of recoil and muzzle blast.

The Woolly Mammoth were supposed to be larger than African elephants I believe. Also as they lived in an ice age and near the polar caps in addition to their hair I would guess they would have layers of thick fat for insulation.

It has been hypothized that the early hunters the mamnmoth hunters hunted them by the use of group strategy eg using firebrands to scare the mammoth and drive them over cliffs.

Also by spearing them from several different sides but I guess this tactic proved fatal for some.

I would use a similar tactic and choose two firearms. For myself a nice .500 NE, double of course. For my friend, let's call him "Mike" , a four bore single, most important equipped with a sling.

Using group tactics I would fire two shots from the .500 and then "Mike" could let rip with the blackpowder single 4-bore. "Mike" being encumbered by the slung 35 lb rifle and the cloud of smoke would provide a nice diversion and smoke screen for me to escape.

Modern equipment, prehistoric tactics.

I would return with Ayla (the blonde who looks like Darryl Hannah) and the rest of of the tribe later in the day to claim the meat and we would celebrate "Mike's" bravery and sacrifice for the good of the tribe.

Nitrox,

I like your style! After considerable thought - I think I would adopt your strategy. We shall call it the "Mike" strategy! What an idea. You are obviously a "cagey" man.

I have told Mike about taking his name in vain. He may well have his revenge - maybe a sabre toothed tiger hunt?

I actually believe the Japanese will in fact be successful with this project. There are a number of cloning projects for extinct species ongoing at this time.
Yes we did truly consider producing a small herd of these beasts. I actually would undoubtably become to fond of them( like our transgenic mice) and not plug them except for culling purposes.
Now the idea of a semi-auto .600 OK is intriguing. I've heard of .458 win mags on Browning BAR actions but never seen one. -Rob

Rob--My gunsmith neighbor Bob Snapp, built some 458WIN
on BARs, They wrere originally 338WIN. Worked fine.
You could scale one up for the 600OK.Not any harder than
the Russian built 8 bore pump gun, to figure out.Ed.

Hmmmmm, I think that I would choose a 45-70 as I am convienced by those in the know that it will slay the greatest of beeestes!!!

PS
I will use a hammerheaded flip flop dum dum bullet of some 1000 grs at a muzzle velocity of 3000 FPS as tested on my chronograph and proven in battle by none other than Capt. Marvel...

I would just use the bugger to bang my head against killing the beast with one giant head butt No reason to overkill with a monster like the 45-70

Robgunbuilder, why so optimistic about the cloning project? Is mammoth DNA felt to be quite close to elephant? I suppose 10,000 year old DNA is more usable than dinosaur stuff, eh? I guess I've read a bit about using cattle to carry a Gaur calf or something similar, but a mammoth would still seem to be quite a step up from that!

NitroX--I have something that would help ""Mike""
survive, to be able to get rewarded by an Ayla type.
It would be chambered in a Lahti with wheels in place
of the runners, and allowing full potential from a 4 bore size case(43,000 ft lbs)It is on the right in picture.
Left to rt--458WIN--700HE--1000HE belted like other two.

Mike we are just getting you built up.Not in one jump
from 550MAG to 1000HE, but by steps. Like a 550MAg,then
600 OK, 700 HE, then the big one.Seriously I will have a
test barrel in the future, for big one mounted on a trunnion,
to do load work. And I can use case spinner/lathe and
build swages to make 4 bore brass for folks from
the 20mm brass, I made this belted case from.I can make them so that the sides of the case isn't thinned.
That keeps case strong and reloadable dozens of times.
Got two who already want some.Got find a set of standard measurements for 4 bore if possible. If anyone has any 4 bore size info let us know.Ed.
