My Nova Pump shooting three and half inch slugs that put out almost two tons of energy are much worse than my friends 458win mag. Unfortunately I have no experience with a 416.

Where do you even find 3 1/2" slugs? Or do you load your own? I had a rifled barrel for my 11-87 super mag last year so I figured the slugs were at least available, but never did find any for sale. Might be "interesting" to try a couple in my 870-I do know that 3 1/2" 00 buckshot gets punishing after about 3 rounds though.

I have found that felt RECOIL is very much about gun fit, recoil pad, etc.

As an EXAMPLE----I had a light weight double barrel 20 gauge Zabala that kicked very sharply. 3 inch magnum shells gave me a nearly instant headache. I cut the stock slightly added a 1 inch Limbsaver and totally altered the felt recoil. I would say the kick is now modest. And the gun is enjoyable to shoot. Yes same gun same 3 inch magnums. Thus, if someone asked does a 20 gauge side by side kick hard the answer would be "yes", and, then, "no".

So I do not think it is possible to say a 416 kicks less or more than a 458 because we all assess FELT recoil of any gun we shoot. It does not matter what the computer says, if you shoot a 416 and say OUCH! or if you shoot it and DON'T say ouch....that is what matters!

I have heard some guys say their 416 kicks harder than any gun they have shot and others say their 458 is a hard kicker while some said, very manageable.... as we all know, too, what matters so much is bullet grain and amount and type of powder. Hence every caliber kicks at various levels depending on charge. My 300 WinMag kicks radically different when I load it with 220 grainers verses 180's.

i had a 700 remington .416 remington magnum that was horrendus in the recoil department. i have had a cz 550 in .458 lott and now have a ruger M77 in .458 lott and a hawkeye .375 ruger. the .375 ruger is not too bad. i have shot the 270 and 300 grain factory loads and both are manageable. the M77 in .458 lott is not too horrible now that i am used to it. i have had to "relearn" to shoot these rifles. i have developed a technique that allows the rifle to recoil and roll my shoulder and upper body thus reducing felt recoil. thanks to all the members here who coached me through this.

Why did you switch from the CZ 550 in 458 Lott to the Ruger ?

I've owned and often shot a Ruger 416 Rigby, a custom 458 Win,and currently own and shoot a Ruger 77 458 Win (old top tang safety)and a 416 Taylor built on a Kimber 8400 Montana. I don't believe there is a definitive answer to this question. So much of FELT recoil depends on rifle weight. stock design, bullet weight, etc. One 458 may seem to recoil more than a 416 and with other rifles- vice a versa.

It's alla bout proper fit , and proper stocks ..

I had a No.1 375 , that was downright brutal and it was 10#~

I am on my third Lott , a CZ weighing 8.7# , and it fits good and isnt "too" bothersome ..

One thing with heavies is ya hafta shoot them fairly regularly , at least I do , or seems they will hurt more ...

Very interesting the differences in felt recoil. My .416 Rigby is a #1 and there is no question from a bench that it is worse than the .458. Haven't shot a .458 Lott with a full house load but suspect it would be worse. reflex264

The 458 has a few more Ft Lbs then the 416

Yogi000 it the nail dead centre- how the gun fits is so important to 'felt' recoil, as to make subjective critisism difficult to weed through.
; Above, Shamankungulo has a #1 in .375 that kicks him - The ones I fired, without scopes were very pleasant to shoot - easy in fact, yet I hate shooting most production .300 Win Mags or Wtby's - too sharp a recoil. I've shot .30/06's that would make you think you were shooting a .338Wm and .338's that seemed to kick no more than a good '06. Too, I re-stocked a 9 pound .338 for a friend that originally had a heavy fiberglass thumbhole stock that kicked me a harder than my 9 pound .458 2" shooting 510gr. solids at 2,060fps. for about 4,800 fpe.
: Some guys think a .505 barnes Supreme doesn't kick much - 1 shot was all I would shoot and never again. I must be getting old - don't like getting belted all over the country any more - even sold the 2".
